: of the book.
The general object of the invention is to provide, in abook of this type, a simple and conveniently operable device in the nature of an easel against which the pages of the book may be supported in an upright posi* tion in order better todisplay the material applied thereto.
Anotber ob 'ect is to provide a snpporting device s0 constrncted and arranged that when the book covers rest in open position upOn a table or the like, the pages thereof may be supported so as to expose simultaneonsly two opposed Surfaces, one in an inclined upright position above one cover and the other in a horizontal position above the other cover.
Still another object is to provide an easellike snpporting device (aspecially adapted for leosleaf binders.
a bock of the permanently bonnd type, it is especially adapted for loose-leaf binders. Accordingly, in the drawing, a loose-leai. binder is shown of the type which comprises a pairoi covers constructed to provide a pair of narrow strips 11 hinged to the respective covers at their adjacent edges and arranged to clamp between them a set of leaves or display sheets 12. Free relative swinging 7 movement of the Sheets 11 is assnred in this type of binder by providing hinging strips 13 at the anchored edges of the shets.
In carrying out my invention I employ a snpporting device or easel, indicated general- J? ly at 15, which device is movable from a Other objects and advantages Will become .bodying the invention are especially nseful folded position occupying but a small space within the bookvvhen closedto a position providing a support for the leaves in an upright position. Generally stated, it comprises in the preierred embodiment a brace or strnt 53 member 16 hingedly mounted on a carrier member 17 secnred to one of the end sheets -o*z the book at the bound edge thereoand connected with the strut by a flexible strap 18; and the arrangement is such that When the covers are opened ontwardl and rest fiat upon a desk or table, tbe strnt and cairier may be readily moved into a position on one of the covers si1ch as to form an incli1ied support for the sheets.
The strut 16 and carrier 17 are made of relatively stiffsheet material such as fibre board snitably covered, and are hinged together aleng one cdge as at 1.9 To fasten the carrier 17 in position, it is formed with a bingo portion or attaching strip 20 adapted for binding into the book as by being clamped with the leaves 12 between the strips 11.
It will be observed that in its operative position, the strut 16 rests against the adacent open cover 10, fornnng an angle with the carrier, so that the sheets 11 Will be held in a snbstantially upright position as shown in nig. 1. In its inoperative orcollapsed position, the easel may be folded to occupy a sn1a1l space in the book. For this purpose, tne strnt 16 is1nade slightly narrower than the. carrier 17 so that n1a v lie fiat against the carrier, tbus avoiding the clampingstrip 11. The flexible strap 18 being oi relatively thinfiexible material occupies no apprcciable space between the members and Cil : may be readily folded merely by moving the strnt against the carrier.
The construction employed is aclVantageous becanse of its simplicity and becanse of the case W1th which it may be manipnlated. On the latter acconnt books or binders emin sales work and the like, for by a simple and practmally imperceptible operation, the
-easel may be placed in operative position.
Furthermore, a distinct advantage is gained in that the arrangement employed rnders it possible to display two sheet surfaces simultaneously.
I daim as my invention:
1. In a Ioose-leaf binder haVng a pair of covers and leaves having hinged portions bound together between the covers, an easel positioned between one cover and the adjoining Ieaf, and comprising a carrier and a strut of relativeiy stifl? material hinged together a10ng one edge, the carrier having its opposite edge bonnd between the covers with the leaves and the edge of the strut opposite the hinge being adapted when openedtomest against the adjacent c0ver, said strut being shght1y narrower than said carrier so that it may he fiat against the carnet when the book is c10sed.
y 2. In a loose-Ieaf binder having-a pair of coversand leaves bound t0gether along oneedge, an easel pos1c1oned between one cover and the adjoining Ieaf and compris i11g a carrier bound at one edge with the L covers and Ieaves, and a strut on the carrier adaptedto rest agamstthe ad acent cover.
when in operative position.
3. In a book of the character described havmg a pair of covers and a set of Ieaves bound together along one edge, an easel..
:swingahIy secured to one of the end leaves of the set at the boundedge thereof and adapted to rest on one of said covers to hoid the leaves in a snbstantiaHy upright position.
4.In a book of the character described having a pair of covers and a set of leaves 'bonnd t0gether along one edge, an easel swmgabIy secured to one of the end Ieavesof the set and adapted to rest on one of said covers to hold the Ieaves in a substantially npright position.
5. In a book of the character described -having a pa1r of covers and leaves havmg hinged portions bound together between the COVB1S, an easel adapted to support saidleaves in an up1ight position, said easel comprising a carrier member and a strut member hin;ged together aIong one edge, the opposite edge of one of said membe1s being hinged to one of said covers at the hinged edge thereof, and the free edge of the other of said members being adapted to rest against the last mentioned cover to hold the ease1 in operatiVe position.
6. In a Ioose-leaf binder having a pair of covers and leaves having hinged portions bound together by the COVIS, an easel positioned between one of the covers and the leaves, said easel comprising a carrier mem- -ber and a strut member hinged together along one edge so that they inay lie fiat against each other when the book is closed, and an attaching strip hinged to the edge of one of said members opposite the hinged edge and bound withthe coVers and leaves.
7. In a book of the character described position, comprising, in oombination, a car- 11er member and a strut member hinged to each otheralong one edge, the edge of one ofsaid members opposite the hinged edge being formed to be secnrd in the book simulaily to the leaves.
9. An easel adapted to be secured in a boo: having hinged leaves comprising, in combination, a carrier member and a strut member hinged to each other along one edge, and an attach1ng stmp hmged to the opposite edge of one of said members and formed for binding into the book similariy to the leaves.
10. An easeladz pted to be seoured in a 1oose-1eaf binder to hold the leaves in a substantial1y .upright position comprising, in combinatiom,v a carrier and a strut hinged to each other along one edge, the edge of said carrier opposite the hinged edge being formed for b1ndmg into the book similarIy tu r the leaves and said st1ut bein narrower thar-1 said carrier-t0 permit them to lie'flat against each other When the book is closed.
11. An easel adapted to be secured in a loose-Ieafbnder to hold the leaves in a substantizdly npright position comprising, in oombination, a carrier member and a strnt member hinged t0 eaoh other along one edgo,
the opposite edgeof said carrier being forme to be secured in the book similarly to the -leaves, and a strap secnred at its ends to adjacent faces of said members at points spaced fron1 the hinged edge, said strap being 0' relativeIy thin flexible material t0 fo1d fiat between S&Id"1GIIbBIS when the book is closed.
In testimony Whereof, I have hereunto afrfixed my signature.
