GARMENT Application filed January 28, 1932. Serial No. 589,453.
This invention relates to an improved garment adapted to completelg and snugly cover dom of movement. The garment is particularly adapted for use as an undergarment for women, although it may also be used for bathing, dancing, etc., depending upon theing upon or chafing the person of the wearer. A further object is to roduce a pair oftype and character of material employed.
Heretofore, pants, shorts or trunks have been made but such prior garments were either so loose as to cause wrinkles and bulges when worn under close-fitting gowns, or they would crawl and shift on the body of the wearer. Furthermore, the garments of this character made heretofore incompletely covered the gluteus maximus muscles or uncovered said muscles when the wearer rapidly changed her position, thereby pinching said muscles and causing unsightly bulging and discomfort. Furthermore, the garments of the prior art have not been constructed in such manner as to completely cover the pubic regions at all times.
We have discovered that by employing a novel arrangement of elements and by form-' ing the elements in a particular relation to each other, a garment is produced which is free of all the prior disadvantages and instead has the property of completely covering the hips and pubic region even when the wearer is performing acrobratic stunts or otherwise vigorously exercising without simultaneously restricting the movements or causing discomfort to the wearer. One of the distinguishing characteristics of the garment of this invention is that it completely covers and restrains the gluteus maximus muscles and extends downwardly so as to cover the upper portions of the muscles biceps flexor cruris, tensor fasciae femoris and rectus cruris. A garment made in accordance with our invention fits the body of the wearer very snugly without binding or chafing and does not shift or crawl during strenuous exercise.
By extending down to the muscles statedhereinabove, the garment of this invention permits a woman to wear a very close-fitting gown without the formation of .wrinkles or bulges; when thegarment of our invention is worn as a pair of dancing or bathing trunks, the pubic regions remain'thoroughly covered without in any way restricting the movements of the wearer.
An object of this invention is to disclose and provide a garment which is designed and formed so as to fit the person closely without restricting free movement and without shift- Another object is to provide means whereby shadowing will not be obvious.
A further object is to produce pants which will be comfortable to the wearer, and one which will not crawl between the limbs.
Other objects and advantages will be apparent during the course of the following description.
In the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification and in which like numerals are employed to designate like parts throughout the same,
Fig. 1 is a front view of our pants as the same would appear in use,
Fig.- 2 is a three-quarter side view as th same would appear in .use, a
Fig. 3 is a rear view of the same in use,
Fig. 4 is a perspective view of our garment, looking at the front thereof,
Fig. 5 is a similar view looking at the rear thereof,
Fig. 6 is a plan view of the blank from which our garment is formed, and
Fig. 7 is a plan view of a re-inforcing portion of the garment. I
The drawing illustrates a garment for use particularly by dancers and acrobats, which garment is in the form of pants, which will give complete protection to the wearer, yet at the same time affording freedom of movement especially of the rectus femoris muscle, or that one most use by all dancers in high kicks. These pants may be cut from material and on the bias of the material, which allows the garment to be snugly fitted and body in taking quick changes. The double portion in the front afi'ords longer wear and prevents any shadows. The garment may be closed in the center of the back which closing brings the hooks or eyes to such a position that they sink into the natural body crevice between the buttocks. The waistline and leg openings are preferably bound with tape and elastic may be run through this tape, if necessary.
It is a well known fact that some of the evening gowns are so close fitting that it is impossible to wear any kind of a garment unmargin 7 forms the back of the waist portion.
This margin 7 is interrupted by darts 8 and 9, which darts permit the forming of the garment to the body. The back margin is also slit as shown at 11 so that the garment may be drawn on over the hips and afterwards secured by any convenient fastening means, as for instance, as shown at 12 in Fig. 5. A protecting strip13 protects these fastening means from coming into contact with the body. The front portion 4 is provided with outwardly flaring side margins 14 and 17 whereas the rear portion 5 is provided with outwardly flaring side margins 16 and 18 directed toward the front portion 4. The margins 14: and 16 are stitched together so as to form one side seam of the garment and the margins 17 and 18 are stitched together so as to form the other side seam of the garment. The openings or bays 19 and 21 will form the leg openings A and B (see Fig. 4:). These leg openings or bays substantially separate the front and rear portions 4 and 5 respectively of the garment, the inner portions of the legs bays 19 and 21 being sep arated by a crotch portion 23. The leg bays 19 and 21 extend from the side margins 17 and 18 and 14 and 16 respectivel upwardly toward the waist margin 6 o the front portion 4. It is to be noted that the distance between opposing termini of side margins a each leg bay is less than the length of the side margins In other words, the distance between the points 24 and 25 is less than the length of the margins 14, 16, 17 or 18. This particular arrangement insures the product tlon of a garment which will completely cover the hips of the wearer and extend downwardly at the sides and rear so as to entirely cover mamas the gluteus maximus muscle without impairing freedom of movement. A diamond or shield-shaped piece 22 provided with enlarged and pointed end portions 26 and 27 is stitched to the crotch portion 23, the pointed and enlarged heads 26 and 27 extending into the front and rear portions 4 and 5 of the garment. This piece 22 insures a thorough covering of the pubic region and of the rectal cavity so as to prevent shadows and impart smoother lines.
If desired the garment may be made entirely of jersey material or of material of an elastic nature of suflicient give so that the garment may be readily slipped on or off without unhooking a belt, thus eliminating the hook and eye arrangement. When elastic materials of this nature are employed, it ibs not necessary to cut the material on the ias.
It will thus be seen that we have provided a garment which is cut from a single piece of material and cut upon a bias and one which when stitched together will form a garment which will have all the advantages above set forth.
It is to be understood that the form of our invention herewith shown and described is to be taken as a'preferred example of the same and that various changes relative to the material, size, shape and arrangement of parts may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the subjoined claims.
Having thus described our invention, we claim 1. In a garment, a blank of material, said blank having a front margin and a back margin and side margins, said side margins being interrupted by openings extending diagonally thereinto toward said front margin in such a manner that when said side margins are folded upon themselves and stitched said openings will form leg holes, and a shadowproofing piece attached to said blank and extending between said openings.

4. A garment capable of closely fitting the body from the waist and over the hips to the upper portion of the thighs, which in extended form comprisesza front portion provided with a waist margin and outwardly flaring side margins; a rear portion provided with a waist margin and outwardly flaring side margins directed toward the front porsaid front and rear portions and extending from the side margins upwardly toward the waist margin of said front portion, the distance between opposing termini of side margins at each leg bay being less than the length of said side margins.
5. A garment capable of closely fitting the body and upper portion of the thighs, comprising: a front portion provided with a relatively narrow waist section, outwardly flaring side margins, and inwardly directed leg margins inclined toward said waist section from said side margins; a rear portion provided with a relatively narrow waist section, outwardly flaring side margins adapted to be connected to the side margins of the front portion, and inwardly directed leg margins inclined away from the waist section of said rear portion; a crotch portion connecting said front and rear portions, and a shieldin member provided with an enlarged hea extending into the front portion of the garment and adapted to cover the pubic region and an enlarged head extending into the rear portion of the garment carried by said crotch portion.
6. A garment capable of closely fitting the body including a front and a rear portion, sald front and rear portions being separated by a unitary crotch portion connected to the front and rear portions, said unitary crotch portion being provided with an enlarged head extending into the front portion of the garment and adapted to cover the pubic region,
