Description

Filed May 20, 1930 INVENTOR M, @Md/m ATTORNEYS Patented May 16, 1933 UNITED STATES PATENT OF'H'QE THEODORE S. DOWST, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR T DOWST ILNUIACIUBING COMPANY, 0F CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, A. CORPORATION Ol' ILLINOIS racxme srnucrrmn' Application led Iay 20, 1930. Serial No. 453,914. I I
This invention relates to a support and indicates the ba'se of alreceptacle which. is package providin structurally and funccompleted by a cover. 11.v As aforestated, tionally improve characteristics over dethe present structure has-been devised for vices of this character as heretofore conpackagingarticles such as aminiature furnistructed, A ture set including for example a ran 12, 55
It is an object of the invention to provide chair 13, cabinet 14 and table 15, allo these a package and method of packing by means having been indicated in dotted lines. These Aof which one or more articles may be readily are supported upon a base 16 as illustrated in assembled and shipped, and in which during F1g. 3 which has a series of aps 17 propor-V shipment, the likelihood of breakage'will be tional in area to the several articles which are 001 l reduced to a minimum,'aside from the fact to be supported. The base 16 may be spaced that after shipment, the articles will be readfrom the ase of the receptacle in any desired ily accessible for display and other purposes.' manner. One convenient method of accom- A further object of the invent-ion isthat plishlng this is that of providing extended v of providingameth'od of-packing and astrucportions 18 forming a part of the base and l ture whereby such method may be practiced bent to furnish ianges bearing 'against the and which structure may be provided largebase of the receptacle to thus space the deck ly by means of automatic machinery, and 16 therefrom.' vA retaining member is furwhen so provided may be employed by .relanlshed by employing a sheetv of material 19 tively unskilled labor to eiciently spackage. ,having cut-out portions 20 correspondin gen- 7ol articles for display, storage and ipping orally in contour to the outline of the o jects purposes. n supported upon the deck 16, and extending With these and further objects, in mind," into-certain 0f these cut out portions are fla s. reference is had to the attached sheet of draw- 2 1 which may in turn be slitted todefne su ing illustrating one practical embodiment sldiaryvflap portions 22. of the invention, and in which; In order to maintain the retaining sheet Fig. 1 is a plan view ofA a packageA withl 1n assoclation with the deck or base 16, any the cover broken away to disclose the undersuitable' spacing means may be furnished to lying nonstrnction.; retain the sheet a predetermined distance Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional view along from the cover. For example, as shown, ex- 50.
the line 2 2 and in the direction of the artended portions 23 may form a part of the rows of Fig. 1; sheet 19 and be bent-upwardly as 1n Fig.'2 to Figs. 3 and 4 show respectively the ,bottom engage the under face of the cover 11 to assure 85 and top blanks employed in the package; and this result.
Figs. 5 and 6 are enlarged sectional views Thus, with the articles arranged upon the 85 taken along the lines 5 5 and 6 6, and in V deck or base 16, and after the latter is disthe direction of the arrows of Figs. 3 and 2 posed within the receptacle base or body 10, respectively. t l `it will be obvious that an attractive display In the foregoing figures, the invention has is afforded. In this connection, it will be been illustrated in connection with packaging understood that the base may have an upper 9 -articles such as toys in the nature of miniature layer of material 24 which may present acerfurniture. At this' time, it will be undertain decorative effect, and this layer may be stood that while the invention may be emslitted as at 25 in order to facilitate and erployed to advantage in this connection, that mit of the several parts of the base being nt the present method of packagin and disto extend at angles with respect to each other. play is not necessarily limited to t is use, but Obviously, in such position and as has been may advantageously be employed in connecindicated, portions of the articles will extend tion with the packaging of any number of beyond the lower edges of the aps 17 and diii'erentftypes 'of articles; underlie the lower face of the deck 16. How- Thus as in Figs. 1 and 2, the numeral 10 ever, the spacing of this deck from the 10 l is suiliciently great to prevent these extended portions contacting with the base. If
. iaps21 and the now, the retaining member is applied, it will be observed that the articles will extend through thevopcnings 2O thereof and thus these articles will be locked against upward movement. Additionally, by virtue of the subsidiary flaps 22, a placement of the horizontal planes is prevented incident to the fact that these Haps will define what might betermed framing portions to prevent this occurring as has been clearly illustrated in Figs. 1 and 2. At this time, it will also be observed that the projecting portions 23 may be formed with tabs 26 so that after the retaining member is applied, it may be readily removed when desired.
Now with the cover of the receptacle in position, the retaining member will be forced into virtually clamping engagement with'the articles, and the base or ring incident to the spacing expedient provided by the extended portions 23 or the equivalent' thereof. In such position, the` various articles are supported in a cushioned manner against shocks in all Accordingly, the package maybe stored or shipped and subjected to all reasonable rough usage without either danger of damage to the enclosed articles or displacement thereof, and accordingly, the package maybe opened and the retaining element removed in order to attractively display the articles.
From the foregoing, it will be understood that among others the several objects of the invention as speciically aforeoutlined are achieved. It will moreover be appreciated that numerous changes in the construction and rearrangementsv of the parts might be resorted to without departing from the spirit of the invention as defined by the claims.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
