Description

Patented May 16, 1933 n Y Y 1,908,760y y UNITED STATES PATENT orricfa Application sied August 8,1932, serial Np. 627,970, and in Great Britain .Tune s, rasa i This invention relates to corsets for ladies 4; of elastic material, preferably reinforcedv wear'and has for its object to devise imalong its vertical centre line (as indicated, provements therein whereby inter alia same for example, at 5) by a whaleb'one orflile may be more easily adaptable to different insertion, to the edges of whichelastic ma- 5 gures. terial (which edges may converge somewhat 55 To these and other ends, the nature of in 'adownward direction), narrow side pieces which will be readily understood as the in G of non-elastic material may be attached, a vention is hereinafter disclosed, the invenwhalebone or similar reinforcement being tion consists in the improved construction preferably provided on the line af attach-Y c and combination of parts, hereinafter fully ment of the non-elastic material to the elas- 5@ described, illustrated in the accompanying tic materiah The entire front so formed drawing and more particularly pointed outV may thus have a roughly rectangular outline in the appended claims. Y with its width somewhat greater than its the accompanying drawing, in which depth. Along the vertical side edges and to?A 5 similar reference characters indicate similar the bottoni edges of the said Yside pieces the 65 parts in each view Y ends of a plurality of tapes.v or laces 7 7a are Figure l is a front perspective view of secured, these laces, which serve to connect one embodiment of the invention, and the front and back of the corset, be-v Figure 2 is a similar view of a second em,- ing threaded through thek previously-,menbodiment. l tioned eyelet holes 3 in the Vedges of the 70 In carrying the invention into eifectin back and thereafter being hunched to-v one convenient manner as illustrated in Figgether and connected in groups to fastener ure l, a corset, particularly suitable as a tabs 8, 8a. Those'laces 7 which are attached maternity corset, is formed 'in two halves, to the vertical edges of the saidk side pieces hereinafter referred to as, the back and andextend horizontally or substantially so front respectively, and back 1 being arto their corresponding eyelet holes in the ranged to pass around the back and sides Y back of the corset may be divided into of the body of the wearer prior toits contwol or more groups (two such groups being nection as will later be described to the illustrated in the drawing), each havingva front V2 of the corset to which relatively common fastener tab, and those laces a 80 it is both deeper and longer in a vertical which are attached to the bottom edges of direction and wider horizontally. It is arthe side piece and, on account of the greatranged that the upper edges of both vrback77 er length of the back as compared with. and front shall, in the normal wearing the front, extend diagonally downwards position be substantially level with one anto their eyelet holes, preferably forming a 85 other; the lower edge of the -back extends, single group on each side of the front, therefore, below that of the front. being also 'hunched on to fastening tabs 8a.
The back is conveniently formed of The fastening tabs associated with the non-elastic material which may be reinformer groups of laces are each provided 40 forced by a plurality of whale-bones or-the with a plurality of eyelet holes 9, disposed like, vertically disposed at graduated horialong theaxis of the tab, for engagement zontal intervals and extending from the top with a hook l0V attached to a flap ll which of the corset Vover substantially the. entireV latter may be secured (along its vertical cendepth. In a specic example, live whale ter line) to the cent-re of the elastic portion bones are employed, those nearer the centre 4 of the front. On the other hand, vthe of the back 7 being longer than the refastening tab 8a associated with a single latmainder. Disposed along'each vertical edge ter group of laces, i. e. with the group of of the back is va row of closely pitched laces '7a associated with the bbottom edges of eyelet holes 3. the side pieces, is provided with -a hook l2 The Y front 7 comprises a central portion for engagement with KVone of afnumbery of 10U eyelet holes 13 formed in the said flap 11 such eyelet holes being preferably arranged on a line substantially at right angles to the direction of a tape of the latter groups.
In placing the corset in position on the person of the wearer, the edges of the front and back portions are drawn together by means off the laces, after which, these are brought across the front of the corset and their tabs hooked to the aforementioned Hap, adjustment of the-corset beingeected by the choice of the eyelet holes with which the hooks are engaged. The former tabs 8 are fastened rst, their associated hooks being disposedV on the inside of the said flap 11,V the tabs 8a, however, of the latter groups being arranged to hook on to the outsideof the flap.
Suspenders may be attached to the corset, those attached to the .front preferably having single straps 14 of elastic material, while those attached to the back, preferably adjacent to the front edges thereof, may be carried by strapsY 15 doubled on themselves and attached at both ends of the back. Y
A corset as Aabove described is adaptable to different figures, the lacing in particular,
and particularly the lacing attached to the bottom edge of'said side pieces, following the line of the body of the wearer.
"In a modification of the invention as illustrated in Figure 2 the ffront and back of the corset may be of substantially equal dimension, both horizontally and vertically, the groups of tapes or laces in this case being all the equivalent of those designated by the reference 7 in the othercase and extending substantially horizontally from the vertical edges of the the corresponding eyelet holes in the edges of the back of the corsets, their connection by means of fastening tabs to a hooked flap secured to the front7 being similar to that of the corresponding groups employed in the first instance. The construction of the back of the corset may be generally similar to that of the example previously described but the front is formed in the present instance, as may be the back, of non-elastic material, such as brocade of silk or cotton, one or more vertically disposed whalebones being preferably inserted therein at graduated intervals. Gussets 16 of elastic material andpreferably of triangular shape may be inserted at the upper and lower edges, two such being conveniently provided at the upper edge on opposite sides of the centre of the"front, a centrally disposed gusset 17 being provided at the lower edge. This latter gusset partially intersects also the flap 11 to which the fastening tabs are hooked, this being attached, as in the previous instance, at the centre of the front. Elastic gussets may be inserted front to pass through at the base and at the top of the waist portion of the back and suspenders may be attached as in the previous example to the `front and back.
ed to pass around the back and sides ofthe wearer and the front'thverelof respectively, tapes connecting the said front and back portions, fastening tabs to each of which a plurality of "said tapes, bunched together, are connected, a flap provided on said front portion and means on` said flap adapted to permit of said fastener tabs being secured in position. f
2. A corset or bust bodice 'comprisingin combination frontV and back portions, tapes secured to the side edges of saidvfront portion and passing through eyelet holesformed in the adjacent side edges ofthe said back portion, fastener tabs to which' the said tapes are secured, the said tapes being bunched together and secured in groups to the said tabs, a iiap secured to said front portion and means on said flap and said tabsrby which the latter may be secured in'position.
3. A corset orbust bodice comprisingin combination front and back portions said front portion being shallower than the back portion and comprising'A a central 'part formed from elastic material and side parts formed from inelastic material parts secured at each side of said central part, tapes conl necting the front and back portions, fastener tabs, said tapes being bunched together iny groups and each group secured to one of said fastener tabs, a flap secured to the front 0f said central elasticl part of the front portion of the corset and means whereby said fastener tabs may `be detachably secured to said iap.. Y Y
4. A corset or bust bodice according to claim 3 wherein said fastener `Ytabs' are adapted to be secured to theunderside of said iap. 'l
5. A corset or bust bodice comprising in combination front and back portions, said front portion bei-ng vshallower than theback portion and arranged in relation to the lat'- 'ter so that theupper'edges of both said por-` substantially horizontally `t0 eyelet holesV formedin the adjacent sides of the saidback portion through which holes thetapes pass,
