J. L. ALBERTS CORSET CONSTRUCTION Fi led May 18, 1922 Patented June 5, 1923.
UNITED STATES- JACOB L. ALBERTS, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
oonsn'r CONSTRUCTION.
Application filed May 18, 1922. Serial No. 561,845.
To all whom it may concern. 1
Be it known that I, JACOB L. ALBnR'rs,
. a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in- Corset Constructions, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to corsets for women, having particular reference to the construction of the lower portion of the corset, which engages over the hips of the wearer.
The invention has for an object to provide an improved corset of novel construction arranged to confine the body of the user in a manner to ensure a graceful outline to the figure.
For further comprehension of the invention, and of the objects and advantages thereof, reference will be had to the following description and accompanying drawings, and to the appended claims in which the various novel features of the invention are more particularly set forth.
Fig. 1 of the drawings is a perspective view showing my improved corset as in actual use.
Fig. 2 is a horizontal sectional view of the corset taken at the point indicated by the line 22 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a side elevation showing a modified form of corset.
Fig. 4 is an enlarged fragmentary horizontal section on the line 44 of F 1g. 3.
Referring now to the drawings, my improved corset, as here shown is of the stayless type and may be of usual shape, the body of the corset being indicated enerally at 10, being here shown as provi ed with shoulder straps 11 attached to its upper edge, and having the usual hose suspension devices 12 attached to its lower edge.
According to my invention the lower portion of the corset, which fits over-the hips and abdomen of the user, is formed at the sides by the inserts 14 of elastic webbing, which preferably extend from the lower edge of the corset slightly more than half the height thereof, and diminish slightly in width from the bottom to the top thereof.
Fixed to the body of the corset, at the side edges of the elastic inserts 14, are pairs of flaps which may be of generally triangular shape and which extend at their bases which are attached to the said body, substantially the full height of the inserts, the respective flaps of each-pair being numbered 15 and 16. The flaps I of each pair, are adapted to be folded toward one another over the inserts 14 and are stretched or tightened over the latter by suitable means. As here shown the flaps 15 each has a strap 18 fixed to its free edge midway between top andbottom of the flaps and engaged by a buckle'19 carried by the other flap 16.
In use, the straps 18 are tightened to the extent desired to properly confine and compress the hips and abdomen of the user so as to produce the desired configuration. i
In the modification of the invention shown in Figs. 3 and 4 the flaps 15, 16', instead of being secured directly to the body 10 at the sides of the elastic inserts 14, are attached to the adjacent edges of comparatively narrow strips of elastic webbing 20 which are secured at their opposed edges to the body 10, these webbin strips offering somewhat greater tensionaf resistance than the webbing inserts l4. Secured to thecorset body 10 at the side edges of the web bing inserts 14, are rows of buttons 21 which may be, if desired, engaged with buttonholes 22 formed in the flaps 15 and '16.
When it is desired to have a. degree of elasticity in the lower portion of the corset the buttons 21 are disengaged from the flaps 15', 16, so that when the straps 18 are tightened the tension will be applied through the elastic members 20, while if it is desired to more tightly compress the hips and abdomen, the buttons 20 are engaged;
with the flaps 15, 16 so that the latter are secured direct to the corset body 10 and the tension is transmitted directly to the latter without the intervention of the elastic member 20.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to protect by Letters Patent of the United States is as follows:
1. A corset comprising a body, elastic inserts in the sides of said body extending from the bottom thereof upwardly for approximately one-half the hei ht thereof,
pairs of flaps secured to the ody at the sides of said elastic inserts and extending at their bases the full height of said inserts, and means for drawing the flaps of the respective pairs together over said elastic inserts. V
2. A corset comprising a body, elastic inserts in the sides of said body extending from the bottom thereof upwardly for approximately one-half the height thereof, pairs of flaps secured to the body at the sides of said elastic inserts, and means for drawing the flaps of the respective pairs together over said elastic inserts, said flaps being of substantially triangular shape with their bases secured to the corset body and extending substantially the full height of said elastic inserts and draw straps secured to the apical portions of the respective flaps whereby the latter may be connected to one another.
3. A corset comprising a body, elastic in serts in the sides thereof, elastic elements of greater tensional resistance than the said inserts having one edge secured to the said body and spaced laterally from the sides of said inserts, inelastic flaps secured to the said elastic elements, and means for drawing said inelastic flaps together.
a. A corset comprising a body, elastic inserts in the sides thereof, elastic elements of greater tensional resistance than the said inserts having one edge secured to the said body and spaced laterally from the sides of said inserts, inelastic flaps'secured to the said elastic elements, and means for drawing said inelastic flaps together, and means for securing said flaps directly to the said body at the sides of said elastic inserts.
5. A corset comprising a body, elastic inserts in the sides thereof, elastic elements of greater tensional resistance than the said inserts having one edge secured to the said body and spaced laterally from the sides of said inserts, said elastic elements comprising narrow strips of webbing extending the full height of said inserts, inelastic flaps secured to the other edges of said elastic elements, and means for drawing said inelastic flaps together.
In testimony whereof I have afiixed my signature.
JACOB L. ALBERTS.
