Description
F. M. KIBBEY & J. C. HALL.
FOLDING-BEDSTEAD. Y No. 190,333. 7 Patented Mayl, 1877.
UNI ED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FRANK M. KIBBEY, OF MAYFIELD, KENTUCKY, AND JOHN G. HALL, OF CINCINNATI, OHIO; SAID HALL ASSIGNOR TO SAID KIBBEY.
, IMPROVEMENT IN FOLDING BEDSTEADS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 190,338, dated May 1, 1877; application filed January 22, 1877.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, FRANK M. KIBBEY,0f Mayfield, Graves county, Kentucky, and JOHN G. HALL, of Cincinnati, Hamilton county, Ohio, have invented a certain new and useful Folding Bedstead, of which the following is a specification Our improvements relate to devices by which a bedstead may be put into compact dimensions for stowage underneath a larger one; and the invention comprises a set of supplementary legs, capable of being swung downward and outward, and of being locked or held to such extended position by means of removable head and foot boards.
When it is desired to reduce the bedstead to its compact form it is merely necessary to depress the side guards, withdraw the head and foot boards, and fold the supplementary legs upward within the body. The bedstead then rests upon its proper legs, and can be trundled under an ordinary bedstead.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of our improved bedstead in its elevated condition. Fig. 2 is a transverse section at the line X X, showing the bedstead elevated and the foot-board about to be inserted. Fig. 3 is a section, at the same line, after removal of the foot-board and folding of the supplementary legs, so as to reduce the bedstead to its depressed condition. i
A represents the frame or body of a common low bedstead, mounted upon the customary casters a.
Parallel with the head and foot rails B are inner rails G.
Hinged or pivoted to the frame, so as to be capable of being folded up, as in Fig. 3, be-
tween the head or foot rail B and the inner rail 0, are our supplementary legs D.
E are head and foot boards cutaway at their lower end portions so as to fit between and over the legs D, when said legs are in vertical position.
The insertion of the head and foot boards E operates to maintain or lock the legs to their extended position, as in Figs. 1 and 2.
F are two guard-boards, so secured by slots f to studs G upon the frame as to be capable of being elevated to the position shown in Fig. 1. When not needed, these guards can be dropped down behind the side rails of the bedstead.
The interstices L, between the head and foot rails B and the inner rails O, serve as pockets, to hold and retain the supplementary legs both in their folded and extended conditions, and also to hold the head and foot boards, and thus enable the latter to lock the supplementary legs to their extended condition.
The supplementary legs may be provided with casters d, and with cords or thongs J and K, to facilitate their easy elevation and depression in the manner represented.
The ends of thong J being attached to the inner edges of the folding legs D. it follows that the operator by lifting the said thong is enabled to draw the legs together and upward, as in Fig. 3.
The ends of thong K being attached to the outer edges of the said legs D, itfollows that the operator, by lifting the said thong, is enabled to draw the said legs apart so as to assume their extended position, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, and the weight of the bedstead operates to hold them to this position until securely locked by the insertion of the headboard, after which the bedstead may be freely wheeled about.
We claim herein as new and of our invention 1. The combination, with a bedstead, of the supplementary legs D, capable of being locked to their extended position by means of the head and foot boards E within the pockets L, or of being folded within said pockets in the manner explained.
2. In combination with the folding supplementary legs D, the cords or thongs J K, as and for the purpose designated.
In testimony of which invention we hereunto set our hands.
FRANK M. KIBBEY. JOHN G. HALL.
