UNITED STATES PATENT OFFIGE HARVEY D. HARADEN, OF HARTFORD, VERMONT, ASSIGNOR OF A PART OF HIS RIGHT TO ALLEN L. PEASE, OF SAME PLACE, AND PORTUS B. SMITH,
-OF LEBANON, NEW HAMPSHIRE.
IMPROVEMENT IN TOBACCO-PIPES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 190,32l, dated May 1, 1877; application filed February 17, 1877.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, HARVEY D. HARADEN, of Hartford, in the county of Windsor and State of Vermont, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Tobacco Pipes; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figure 1 of the drawings is a representation of a side view of this invent-ion, and Fig. 2 a longitudinal section through the bowl and stem.
This invention has relation to tobacco-pipes,
ter A designates the bowl of the pipe, the
upper part of which forms the tobacco-chamber B, while the body portion 0 is below this chamber. The latter portion is provided with a transverse opening or passage, a, entirely through from front to rear, which is usually made slightly conical or tapering, as shown in the drawings. From the chamber B a perforation, b, leads downward to the passage a connecting the two.
D indicates the stem of the pipe. This is open from end to end, as shown at c, and near of the pipe-bowl.
its rear end d is perforated through its upper wall, as shown at c. This end of the stem is usually made somewhat tapering, to correspond with the form of the passage a, through which said stem is passed, in order to connect it to the bowl. In this position the rear end 01 of the stem is designed to project somewhat beyond the bowl, as indicated in the drawlugs, and the perforation 6 through its upper wall is turned around until it coincides with the lower end of the perforation b of the base A stopper, z, is designed to be inserted into the open rear end at of the stem.
The operation of this pipe is obvious. The tobacco is put in the large chamber B over the base 0. Draft is established through the stem and bowl when the perforations e and b are adjusted to coincide, in the manner above mentioned.
In order to clean the stem, the end-stopper z is taken out. To clean the perforations b and e, the stem may he slipped entirely out of its seat a in the body of the bowl.
Having describedthis invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The smoking-pipe herein described, consisting of the bowl A, having the chamber B, the transversely-perforated body portion G, and perforation b, and the removable stem D, having the opening 0 and detachable end-plug z, substantially as specified.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
HARVEY D. HARADEN.
