CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, A CORPORATION OF ILIICNOIS FOLDABLE DISPLAY CARTON Application led September 24, 1980. Serial No. 483,991.
This invention relates to foldable paper display cartons embodying a receptacle having a forwardly and downwardly inclined open top and a cover therefor.
One of the main objects of the invention is to provide a display carton of the type above mentioned having a cover which serves to build u the receptacle so as to form a substantially rectangular .carton when the same is in closed condition.
Another important object is to provide a cover structure which may be opened and adjusted so as to form a display for attracting attention to the goods displayed in the open receptacle,
Still another important object of the invention is to provide an improved arrangement for locking certain of the overlapping flap portions .of the vreceptacle in folded, receptacle forming position.
Other objects and advantages will be understood by reference to the following specication and accompanying two sheets of drawings wherein a display carton embodying a selected form of my invention is illustrated.
In the drawings:
Figs. 1 and 2 are perspectives of my improved carton showing the same in closed and opened position respectively;
Fig. 3 is a section on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2,
Fig. 4 is a section on the lines 4 4 of Figs. 2 and 3,
Fig. 5 is a section on the lines 5--5 of Figs. 3 and 4,
Fig. 6 is a fragmentary section similar to Fig. 5 but showing certain parts as they appear' before the parts are completely folded,
Fig. 7 is a section on the line 7-7 of Fig. 5, and
Fig. 8 is a plan of the blank from which my improved carton is formed.
Referring now to the drawings, my improved carton comprises a receptacle 10 and a cover 11 which are, in effect, hinged'to- `ether at the rear edge of the top wall of the cover and the top edge of the back wall of the receptacle. The hinge is formed by means of a crease 12 between the cover forming part of the blank and the receptacle forming part, this crease facilitating folding of the cover relative to the receptacle without tearing or breaking the paper. y
By reference to Fig. 8, it will be seen that the part of the blank forming the receptacle l0 is divided by crease lines (indicated by dot and dash lines) into various wall forming sections comprising a bottom wall 13, a back wall 14, a front wall 15 of considerably less depththan that of the back wall, an extension `16 on the front wall 15 of substantially the same depth as said front wall, a marginal portion 17 foldable relative to the extension 16, side wall flaps 18-18 integral with the back wall, tongues 19-19 at the free ends of the flaps 18-18, lips 20--20 projecting from the tongues 19--19 and flaps 21-21 integral with the bottom wall 13.
The receptacle forming portion of the blank' may be folded along the various creases indicated to form the receptacle by first folding the back 14 upwardly at substantially right angles to the bottom wall 13, the flaps 21-21 upwardly at substantially right angles to the said bottom wall, then folding the flaps 18-18 at substantially right angles to the back wall 14 into position overlapping the aps 21 on the outside thereof, then folding the tongues 19-19 at substantially right angles to the flaps 18 and across the front edges 22-22 of the respective aps 21, and incidently folding the lips 2020-at right angles to the respective tongues 19-19 so that the endsY 23--23 of the said lips will engage the inside of the inner iiaps 21 as clearly shown in Figs. 5v
and 6. Of course, it will be seen Athat thel lips 20-20 will be disposed on the inside of the bottom wall 13 of the receptacle and hence will occupy'no material space in the receptacle while being effective to prevent outward unfolding movement of the flap 19 relative to the flap 21. Hence, both Aflaps are effectively maintained in folded, mutually overlapping position in which they form the end walls of the receptacle extending i between the back and front walls 14 and 15 respectively.
The front wall may then be folded upwardly, the extension 16 inwardly and downwardly around th'e tongues 19-19 and the marginal portion 17 inwardly along the' placement. \It will be understood that the tongues 19--19 are prevented from unfolding from their folded osition as indicated in Fig. 5 inasmuch as t ey are embraced by the two-ply front wall structure 15 and 16.
The cover formin portion of the blank shown inFig. 8 is ivided into wall forming sections by crease lines, a generally rectangular section 26 constituting the top wall of the cover, a similar section 27 constituting the front wall and iiap members 28-28 projecting from the ends of the top 26 constituting side walls. For a purpose presently to be explained, the top wall 26 and the flaps 28-28 are provided with aligned creases 29-29 which extend from spaced points intermediate the width of the top wall to the outer edges of the respective iiaps 28-28. The top wall 26 is also slitted as indicated at 30 to form a cut-out display element, in this instance the cut-out element being more or less keystone shaped. -After the receptacle 10 is formed as above described, the cover part 11 may be produced by folding the front wall 27 and the side flaps 28-28 to a position substantially at right angles to the top member 26 and then folding the top 26 along the hinge line 12 to the position indicated in Fig. 1. By inspection of Fig. 8, it will be apparent that the front wall 27 of the cover is of substantially the same depth as the back wall 14 of the receptacle. Hence, it will be understood that the front wall 27 will fit inside ofthe front wall 15 of the receptacle and will engage the bottom of the receptacle so as to be capable of supporting the top wall 26 in substantially parallel relation tol the bottom wall 13. In folding the cover to closed position as shown in Fig. 1, the front wall 27 first enters the receptacle inside ofv the front wall 15 and the side flaps 28-28 of the cover subsequently enter between the side wall flaps 18 and 21 respectively of the receptacle 10. Thus it will be seen that the cover construction embodying the frontwall 27 and side walls 28-28 may be considered extensions of the receptacle to close up the space between the narrow front wall 15 of the receptacle and the top 26 of the cover and between the inclined top edges of the side wall flaps 18 and 21 of the receptacle and the top wall 26 of the cover.
My improved display carton maybe used as a container for any desired form of goods, such as canned or otherwise packaged goods, which are more or less selfsupporting so that they will project above the narrow front wall 15 of the receptacle and the forward narrow portions of the respective side walls. When it is desired to display the goods, the cover is opened up and the flaps 28-28 extended to flatwise position, whereupon the top 26 and the side aps 28-28 may be folded along the creases 29 to theposition indicated in Fig. 2. By reason of the slit 30 in the cover, the keystone shaped display projection 31 is removed from the rear portion of the top wall 26 and projects upwardly to increase the atthe forward portions of the side flaps 28-28 extend beyond the sides of the receptacle' and constitute wing-like members '32-32 which also increase the attractiveness and which are adapted to be provided with suitable illustrative or other advertising matter. The front wall 27 of the cover is insertible into the receptacle between the back wall 14 thereof and any contents in the receptacle so that the display elements 31, 32 and 33 extend upwardly at the back of the receptacle as clearly shown in Fig. 4.
In the above description, I have used the term creases in a broad sense to indicate anysuitable form of fold lines which may be made simply by creasing the paper to weaken the same along the desired lines, by scoring, or in any other suitable manner.
The above described display carton structure is quite simple, easy to make and easy to fold into the closed carton condition illustrated in Fig. 1 and also easy to open from such closed condition to the display condition illustrated in Fig. 2. I am aware that changes may be made in the above described construction without departing from the spirit of my invention, the scope of which should be determined by reference to the following claims, the same being construed as broadly as possible consistent with the state of the art.
