Description

DISPLAY DEVICE Filed Dec. 29, 193].
Patented Mar. 14, 1933 UNITED STATES WILLIAM O. ALLEN, 0F GLENDALE, KENTUCKY DISPLAY DEVICE Application filed December 29, 1931.
The object of the invention is to provide a device for use in connection with cartons or containers of box form that will serve as a false bottom to be elevated as the contents of the box are removed to maintain always the appearance of a full box or carton; to provide a device of this nature which may be readily secured in its adjusted position; and to provide a device which is of simple form, susceptible of cheap manufacture and of a character that may be marketed at small cost.
With this object in view, the invention consists in a construction and combination of parts, of which a preferred embodiment is' illustrated in the accompanying drawing, but to which the invention is not to be restricted further than is imposed in the scope of the appended claim.
In the drawing:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a box or carton, partly broken away, showing the invention applied in operative position.
Figure 2 is a central vertical longitudinal sectional view of the structure of Figure 1.
Figure 8 is a transverse vertical sectional view of the structure of Figure 1.
Figure 4: is a plan view of the device constituting the invention.
As the contents of the box or carton 10 are removed, the invention is employed to maintain the contents apparently at the level top of the box and to this end the false bottom 11 is employed, this being made prefer- 5 ably of corrugated board dimensioned according to the dimensions of the box in which it is to be employed. At the ends the board is provided with long flaps 12 and on its longitudinal edges with narrow flexible flaps 14, both the flaps 12 and the flaps 14 being extensions of paper sheets adhesively secured on the top and bottom faces of the corrugated board and adhesively secured together where they extend beyond the extremities of the board.
The bottom 11 being dimensioned according to the box 10, when it is disposed in the latter, the longitudinal flaps 14: bear against the front and back walls of the box and prevent the dropping of any crumbs from the Serial No. 583,756.
contents, into the bottom of the box and also preclude the entrance of dust into the box 1 in the unoccupied space resulting from the raising of the contents as the latter are disin Figure 1, and being secured in the adjusted position by means of clips 15. Or in lieu of the clips, the flaps on the box contacting faces may be provided with an adhesive for securement to the sides of the box. The
employment of the clips is probably preferable, since the false bottom will require frequent adjustment as the contents of the box are dispensed, and the simple removal of the clips and raising of the bottom, followed by reattachment of the clips, can very readily be made.
Instead of the flaps being formed of a duality of sheets of paper secured both to the top and bottom faces of the false bottom, a single sheet of heavy paper may be employed and be secured or left unsecured to the false bottom, but extending beyond the ends of the latter to constitute the elevating and retaining means for the false bottom.
The invention having been described, what is claimed as new is:
A device for the purpose indicated for serving as a false bottom in a box or carton, the same comprising a substantially inflexible flat member dimensioned according to the plan dimensions of the box in which it is to be used, and flexible sheets secured to the top and bottom faces thereofand extending beyond the ends and secured together to provide tongues or flaps for folding over the edges of the carton to be secured thereto to selectively position the false bottom at any point in the height of the carton, the sheets being extended beyond the side edges of the board to provide long narrow flaps at the 9 front and rear edges of the same for dust excluding contact with the front and rear walls of the box.
In testimony whereof I aiiix my signature.
WILLIAM O. ALLEN.
