Claims.
This invention relates to improvements in cartons and particularly to improvements in cartons of the knocked down type.
This application is a division of copending application Serial No. 403,376 for Cartons filed Julil 2l, 1941, now Patent No. 2,397,934.
In the past there has been provided hollow wall cartons such as disclosed in applicants Reissue Patent No. 21,158, dated July 25, 1939, on which the present application is an improvement. It is frequently desirable to provide hollow wall cartons of a shallow type whereby articles originally shipped therein maybe retained therein for display above the walls of said carton. In order to display the articles it is advantageous that the face of the article be inclined rearwardly from the observer and which position can be readily given to the articles by the formation of the carton or box displaying the same. The construction of the carton or box of the present invention fuliills these desirable qualities.
It is, therefore, the principal object of this in- .vention to provide a carton or boX of the knocked down variety having inclined inner supporting walls.
It is another object of this invention to Vprovide a knocked down carton or box which can be readily erected for use as a shipping and displaying container and wherein the displayed articles are disposed at an inclination to the plane of support of the container.
Another object of this invention is the provision of a box or carton for accomplishing the foregoing objects which is formed of a single blank.
Other objects and advantages of the present invention should be readily apparent by reference to the following specication. considered. in conjunction with the accompanying drawings forming a part thereof and it is to be understood that any modication may be made in the exact structural details there shown and described, within the scope of the appended claims, without departing from or exceeding the spirit of the invention.

As was mentioned above this invention pertains to an improved carton of the knocked down type and particularly to a hollow wall carton wherein the inner wall member is inclined whereby articles may be mounted therein, while on display. In the following description references will be made to sides and ends, but it is to be understood Vthat these 'terms are used Amerely for convenience in reference land not as lmitating terms since the opposed longer sides are generally designated as sides while the shorter sides are frequently referred to as ends.
Specifically, the carton of this invention is formed 'from a blank indicated vby the reference numeral I'0 comprising a central Panel II which forms the bottom of the carton` The sides of the bottom vII are defined .by fold or score lines I2, I3, I4 and I5 which are indicated in the drawings by dash lines; and it should be here noted that all dash lines on the drawings Vindicate fold or score lines. Extending from fold lines I2 and I3 are portions I6 and I'I which, in the carton illustrated in the drawings constitute the carton sides, while extending from the score lines I4 and I5 are, respectively, portions I8 and I9 which form the end walls.
yPortions I6 and I1 are substantially identical in construction and it is deemed sufficient if but one of them be described .in detail, accordingly, the portion I'l is provided with score or fold lines 20, 2l, and 22 forming between them and the score lines I3 and outer edge of the portion I'I, panels 23, 24, 25 and 26. The opposite ends of the panel 25 are respectively defined by score lines 21 and 28 which, respectively, hingedly connect thereto tucki- ng flaps 23 and 30. Each of the flaps 29 and 30 has hingedly connected to it along its score or fold. lines 3l and 32, which 'are in line with side portion score line 2|, a spacer tab 33'and lill.
The end wall portions I8 and I9 are substan tiallyidentical in construction although the elements thereof are of different proportions which will be pointed out hereinafter while a description of the one of said portions is suicient for'the other. Accordingly, portion I9 is provided witha plurality of score or fold lines 35, 36 and 31 forming between them and score or fold line I5 .and the end of the blank, panels 38, 39, 4U and 4I'. The opposite endsof the panel 4U are respectively, in part, dened by score or fold lines 42 .and 43 which, respectively, hingedly connect to the ends of the said panel 40 spacer tabs 44 and 45. Further de- 3 lining the ends of the panel 40 are locking tabs 46 and 41.
A comparison of the panels of lthe end portions I9 and I8 will disclose that panel 4| of the end portion I8 is wider than the corresponding panel portion 4I of the end portion I9 while panel portion 39 of the end portion I8 is narrower than the corresponding panel portion 39 of the end portion I9 and the purpose for which will be pointed out subsequently.
The panel 25 of the side portions I6 and I'I are each provided near their ends and substantially adjacent the score of fold line 22 with inclined apertures 48 and 49 and the said panels are provided near one of their ends and adjacent the score or fold line 2| with a slit 59 thereby providing a tongue I.
Each of the side panels 23 is connected at its opposite ends with the adjacent ends of the adjacent end panel 38 by a mechanism referred to in the trade as a bellows corner. This bellows corner comprises a corner piece 52 connected by a score or fold line 53 to the side panel 23 and by a foldor score line 54 with the end panel 38. The corner piece 52 is further provided with a diagonal fold or score line 55.
The blank vIIJ is formed or cut from card or paper board material inV one piece with each of the extensions I 6 VandII extended as side extension I'I is illustrated and with the fold or score lines, above specifically set forth formed at the time vof `cutting the blank. AdhesiveY 5B is also at this time applied to the under side of the side portions panels 26. Actually the said side portions panels 26 and 25 are first folded on the score lines 2| onto the side portions panels 24.and23 before the said adhesive 56 is applied whereupon the said side portions panels 23, 24, 25 and V26 are folded about the score or fold line I3 onto the bottom panel I I which is the arrangement illustrated for side portion I6 in Fig 1 and whereby the side portions panels 26 are adhesively secured to the bottom panel I. It is in this condition that the cartons are shipped to the purchaser for subsequent use. n
In order to assemble the carton, the sides IB and I'I are raised from the illustrated folded position of side I6 t-o the upstanding position of the sides as illustrated in Fig 2 in which said carton sides are normal to the bottom panel. It will be noted that the sides are then provided With outer side wall members 23 normal to the bottom panel II, top wall members 2,4 extending parallel with the bottom panel II, inner sides wall members, formed by the panels 25,*extend`ing normal to the bottom panel II and with the outer panels 26 glued tothe bottom panel II. The tucking naps 29 and 3U are then arranged across the bottom panel with their-spacer flaps disposed parallel with the bottom. f
'Ihe end portions or walls I8 and I9 are then assembled to complete the carton. Bellows corner pieces or portions 52 are folded inwardly along fold or score lines 53 and 54 causing each of them to fold on itself about the diagonal fold or score line 55. This operation causes the end eX- tension` I8 and I9 to be disposed normal to the bottom panel II with the panels 38 forming the outer end wall members. The remaining portion of each end wall extension is then folded as follows. The endmost panel 4| is bent along score line 31 to be at right angles to panel 40. Panel 39 is then bent about score line 35 at right angles to panel 38 to form end wall top member and is therefore parallel with the bottompanel I I. The panel 40 is then bent about score line 36 toward the outer end wall member 39 thereby forcing the lower end of said panel andthe panel 4I toward the outer end wall member and to lie parallel with and on the bottom panel II. Due to the shortness of the panel 4I and when it contacts with the outer end wall member 33Y it causes the inner Vend wall memberrk'l to lie at an angle to the bottom other than a right angle and actually to have its lower end beneath the top or end wall panel 39 as clearly illustrated at the right hand end of Fig 3. In other words the inner wall member is inclined upwardly and toward the center of the assembled carton and provides an angle of inclination which is the angle of inclination of the articles or goods to be displayed ras illustrated in phantom lines at 5l in Fig 3.
With respect to the end wall portion I8 and having the opposite proportion in Widths of the panels 39 and 4| from lthat of lthe corresponding panels of the end wall portion I9 the inner end Wall inclines oppositely, namely, downwardly and toward the interior' or cen-ter ofthe assembled carton as clearly illustrated att-he left hand end of Fig. 3. Inv each instance, however, the inner wall member is inclined withrrespect to its outer wall'member.' Y
The end walls are retained against collapse first by side wall .tucking flaps 29 and 30 and their spacer flaps 33 and 34 which underlie the end wallsformed from end wall extensions and secondly by the tonguesv 5| which projecttoward one another from the tops of 'theinner walls members and around at the end wall panels 39 and 40 are folded. These parts are locked in the assembled positions by snapping the locking tabs 46 and 41, at the opposite ends of the end wall inner wall members` 49, respectively, into the inclined apertures 48Y and 49 of the side wall inner wall members 25.
In order toprevent Vthe disarrangements of the goodsror articles 51 upon removal, for example, of the rst one, there is provided in thel carton means for preventing the lower end of successive articles. from slidingforw-ard dueto their angular position. It is believed that the foregoing clearlydis-` closes the construction .of ya carton or box for the purpose originally set forth and provides a construction which will accomplish the desired obiectsof this invention. Y l
What is claimed is:
1. In a carton part of the class described comprising a base,. side walls upstanding from said base, end walls from oppositeV endsofthe base each formed from an extension subdivided by paralled score lines into .portions adapted to form an outer wall member, an inner wall member and a top wall member, said inner and outer wall members being respectively of dissimilar dimension whereby the inner wall members are, respectively, disposed at an angle to the top wall members and carton base other than the angle of ythe outer Wall members thereto, said inner wall members extending at angles to one another Ithat are substantially supplementary, means projecting from said side walls engaged by an inner wall member to hold said inner wall member in position, and a corner tab hingedly connected to each end of each side wall adapted to be disposed across the base between the inner and outer end wall members.
2. In a carton of the class described oomprising a base, extensions from each side of said base, two opposed extensions forming side walls and each extension being divided by score lines into panels with the panel adjacent the base and the third panel from the base of equal width, which panels, when in erected positions, form in each side wall an outer wall member, an inner wall member, a top wall member and a glue flap at the free end of one of the inner and outer wall members for securing the said wall member to the base a distance from the side thereof equal to the Widthl of the top wall member whereby said inner and outer wall members are parallel throughout their height, the extensions from the remaining opposed sides of said base forming end walls and each extension divided by score lines into panels which, when in erected positions,V
form in each end wall an outer wall member, a top wall member, an inner wall member and a spacer member lying on the base between the lower ends of said inner and outer wall members and with said top wall member and spacer member of each end wall respectively of different widths whereby said inner and outer wall members are disposed at angles to the outer wall members and base, said inner wall members extending at angles to one another that are substantially supplementary, means projecting from said side walls inner wall members at a corresponding end thereof engaged by the adjacent end wall inner wall member to hold said inner wall member in position, and cooperating means on said side and end walls for holding said walls in erected operative positions.

In a carton or the class described comprising a base, extensions from each side of said base, two opposed extensions forming side walls and each extension being divided by score lines into panels with the panel adjacent the base and the third panel from the base of equal width which panels, when in erected positions, form in each side wall an outer wall member, an inner wall member, a top wall member and a glue flap at the free end of one of the inner and cuter wall members for securing the said wall member to the base a distance from the side thereof equal to the width of the top wall member whereby said inner and outer wall members are parallel throughout their height, the extensions from the remaining opposed sides of said base forming end walls and each extension being divided by score lines into panels which when in erected positions form in its end wall an outer wall member, a top wall member, an inner wall member and a spacer member lying on the base between the lower ends of said inner and outer wall members and with said top wall members and spacer members of each extension or end wall of different widths whereby said inner wall members are disposed at an angle to the outer wall members and base, said spacer member of each end wall being of a different width whereby the sai-d end walls inner wall members extend at angles that are substantially supplementary to one another, and cooperating means on said side and end walls for holding said walls in erected positions, comprising apertures in the side walls inner wall members inclining at Vthe angle of inclination of the end walls inner wall members, and locking flaps 'at the ends of the end walls inner wall members adapted for engagement with the inclined apertures.

In a carton of the class described comprising a base, extensions from each side of ysaid base, two opposed extensions forming side walls and each extension being divided by score lines into panels with the panel adjacent the base and the third panel from the base of equal width which panels, when in erected positions, form in each side wall an cuter w-all member, an inner wall member, a top wall member and a glue nap at the free end of one of the inner and outer wall members for securing the said wall member'to the basel a distance from the side thereof equal to the width of the top wall member wherebysaid inner and outer wall members are parallel throughout their height, the extensions from the remaining opposed sides of said base forming end walls and each extension being divided by score lines into panels which when in erected positions form in its end wall an outer wall member, a top wall member, an inner wall member and a spacer' member lying on the base between the lower ends of said inner and Outer wall members and with said top wall members and spacer members of each extension or end wall of different widths whereby said inner wall members are disposed at an angle to the -outer wall members and base, said spacer member of each end wall being of a different width whereby the said end walls inner wall members extend at angles that are substantially supplementary to one another, cooperating means on said side and end walls for holding said walls in erected positions, comprising apertures in the side walls inner wall members inclining at the angle of inclination of the end walls inner wall members, and locking aps at the ends of the end walls inner wall members adapted for engagement with the inclined apertures, tucking iiaps at the en-ds of said side walls inner wall'members adapted to be disposed transversely of the base between the end walls inner and outer wall members, and spacer tabs on said tucking iiaps adapted to underlie the end walls top wall members.

In a cartoon of the class described comprising a base, extensions from each side of said base, two opposed extensions forming side walls and each extension being divided by scorelines into panels with the panel adjacent the base and the third panel from the base of equal width which panels, when in erected positions, form in each side wall an outer wall member, an inner wall member, a top wall member and a glue flap at the free end or" one of the inner and outer wall members for securing the said wall member to the base a distance from the side thereof equal to the width of the top wall member whereby said inner and outer wall members are parallel throughout their height, the extensions from the remaining opposed sides of said base forming end walls and each extension being divided by score lines into panels which when in erected positions form in its end wall an outer wall member, a top wall member, an inner wall member and -a spacer member lying on the base between the lower ends of said inner and outer wall members and with said top wall members and spacer members of each extension or end wall of different widths whereby said inner wall members are disposed at an angle to the outer wall members and base, saidrspacer member of each end wall being of a different Width whereby the said end walls inner wall members extend at angles that are substantially supplementaryV to one another, cooperating means on said side and end Walls for holding said Walls in erected positions, comprising apertures in the side walls inner wall members inclining at the `angles of inclination of the endwalls inner Wall members, and locking aps at the ends of the'end walls inner wall members adapted for engagement with the inclined apertures, tucking aps at the ends of said side walls inner Wall members adapted to be disposed transversely of the base between the end walls inner and outer wall members, spacer -t-abs on said tucking flaps adapted to underlie the end walls top wall members, and a spacer flap at each end of theend walls inner wall members having the free ends thereof inclining in a direction substantially opposite to the direction of inclination of the end wall inner Wall members and engaging the end wall outer wall mem-bers for spacing the ends of said end Walls inner and outer wall members from one another.
