Description
R. M. GUNNISON BOOK Filed 001;. 20, 1952 INVTR- Q B wm ATTORNEY- accordance with done when they Patented Mar. 7, 1933 UNITED sra I escasas BOOK Application led October 20, 1932. Serial No.- 638,685.
vMy invention relates to periodicals, magazines, pamphlets and the like and in particular comprehends a. magazine having a hanger combined therewith for suspending the magazine from a projecting support.
lVhere periodicals disseminate information that is local in character, it is quite common to deliver them without wrapping them as is are delivered through the delivered, the periodical is usually dropped on a doorstep or on a porch and frequently, due to carelessness in delivery, or the action of the wind, the periodical is placed in a position where it is not seen by the person supposed to receive it.
An advantage of 'my invention isthe fact that the periodical may, when delivered,be hung upon a projecting support, such, for example, as the door-knob, where it will command attention and from which it will no-t be accidentally removed or displaced. In
mails. l/Vhen so periodical which includes a body portion similar to the usual periodical and consisting of a number of-sheets having printed matter thereon and securely bound along their rear edges to open in book form. To this'body portion there is firmly secured a hanger comosed of an additional'sheet which is bound with the sheets of the periodical, the additional sheet being adapted to extend beyond one edge of the body portion. Through the section which is adapted to `extend beyond the body portion an opening is formed which is adapted to receive a projecting support from which the periodical may be suspended.
Another advantage of the periodical of my l invention is the fact that the hanger,'besides being adapted to suspend the periodical from a prominent position, lies flat against the cover of the periodical when it is not required for supporting'y the periodical.
Specifically, a periodical embodying my invention includes a hanger consisting of a sheet of heavy paper which is bent upon itself. The hanger so formed is bound together with the edge formed by bending the sheet extending along the rear or bound edge of the periodical. The two sides or leaves formed by my invention l provide a pages lof the periodical, the
bending the sheet upon itself embrace a part ofthe body of the periodical and each leaf has'an opening therethrough disposed to reg- 'rEs PATENT .ori-"ICE ister with the hole in the companionleaf when the two leaves are bent to extend rearwardly of the periodical in which position the aligned holes in the leaves of the hanger vare adapted to receivea `projecting support such, for example, as a door-knob.
A more clearunderstanding of my inveny tion-will be had from the following particular description ofone embodiment thereof when considered in connection vwith the ac-v companying drawing in which:
Fig. l yis aside elevation'of embodying my invention; i
" periodical Fig. 2 isa rear .elevation of the same,v the l periodical being open and c v f Fig. 3 is a side elevationv ofthe same with the hanger positioned to receive a projecting SUPPOT- In the drawing the body portion Vlv ofthe periodical represents the usual type of periodical and-consists of a plurality of sheets having printed matter thereon "such as rfiction or advertising and firmly bound together .along their rear edges. To the periodical there is secured a hanger 2; This hanger consists of a sheet of paper of suii'icient stiflness and strength to support the weight of the periodical. The sheetr of papery forming the hanger is bent upon itself formingtwo sides or leaves 2a and 2b. The sheet is placed around the rear edge of the periodical, that is, the edge at which the pages makingup the periodical are bound together. rllhe bendy in the sheet constituting the hanger is firmly bound to the rear edge of the periodical with the edge formed by bending the sheet extending along the rear edge of the periodical and o the two leaves formed by bending the sheet embracing a part of the cover sheet of the periodical.
Openings are formed in the hanger leaves and when the leaves are bent to extend reary wardly of the periodical, these openings are aligned axially and adapted to receive a pro- ]ecting support. As shown in Fig. 3, when the leaves of the hanger are sok positioned,
the hanger maybe readily slipped over a door-knob or other projection. When suspended from a door-knob the periodical can not readily be accidentally displaced or mislaid. Due to its conspicuous position, the periodical commands attention, thus assuring that it Will get in the hands of the one for Whom it is intended.
It Will readily be appreciated that the precise form and disposition of the hangerare not restricted to the illustrated construction, since the same advantages may be obtained with modifications. rIhe hanger may, for example, extend above the top edge of the periodical and have the orifices in line When the leaves of the hanger lie against the cover sheet. Other modifications Within the spirit and scope of my invention as expressed in the appended claims Will occur to those skilled in the art.
I claim:
l. The combination of a periodical coniprising a plurality of sheets bound along their rear edges to open in book form, and
a hanger for the periodical composed of a folded sheet bound along the fold therein to the rear edge of the periodical and having a hole in each side adapted to register With.
the companion hole to receive a projection support.
2. The combination of a periodical comprising a plurality ofshcets bound along their rear edges to open in book form, and a hanger for the periodical composed of a folded sheet bound along the folded edge thereofto the periodical and having a hole in each side disposed to register With the companion hole When the sides of the hanger are bent rearwardly of the periodical.
3. The combination of a periodical comprising a plurality of sheets bound along their rear edges to open in book form, and a hanger for the periodical composed of a folded sheet bound along the folded edge thereof to the periodical and having a hole in each side, the hanger being positioned so 'that When folded in one direction the sides thereof embrace a portion of the periodical and lie Wholly Within the boundaries thereof and when folded in the opposite direction the sides extend beyond the boundaries of the periodical With the holes therethrough in register and adapted to receive a projecting support.
ln Witness whereof, I hereunto subscribe my signature.
` RAYMOND M. GUNNISON.
