Description
R. PONTON SHOULDER STRAP Jan. 17, 1933.
Filed Aug.
Patented Jan. 17, 1933 RICHARD PONTON, OF CENTRAL FALLS, RHODE ISLAND SHOULDER STRAP Application filed. August 6, 1932. Serial No. 627,727.
My invention relates to improvements in shoulder straps such as are commonly used for the support of undergarments for ladies and children, and one purpose of my invention is to provide a shoulder strap withan elastic attachment and also with a provision for adjustment as to length so that the same may be adapted to wearers of different heights and ages. Another purpose is to provide a shoulder strap in which no button holes are necessary thus materially reducing the cost of manufacture.
These objects are secured by the device shown in the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a perspective of my device.
Figure 2 a detail of the elastic and adjusting member.
Figure 3 a cross section through the elastic member and its fastening clip, and
Figure 4 a detail of the fastenin clip.
The same letters are used to indicate the same parts of my invention throughout the various figures.
In Figure 1, A, represents the body of the strap which is designed to go over the shoulder of the wearer and consists of ordinary webbing, or similar material. The extremities of strap A are looped at Ar -A so as to permit of the introduction of the elastic adjusting members BB. These members BB consist of elastic fabric, preferably of circular cross section, and are provided with the fastening clips E-EEE. These clips are fixed upon the elastic members BB and are so arranged as to provide for two or more loops, as shown at Cl)CD. The ends of the member B are secured by sim ilar clips FF, shown best in Figure The loops (lDC-D are designed to fit and engage buttons upon the garments to be sup ported and by the separation of these loops by means of the clips EE the wearer may change at will the available length of the shoulder strap. While two loops only are shown in the drawing, the number may be increased to three or more, as desired. By the use of two or more loops, a single shoulder strap will serve to support two or more gar ments on the same wearer, the separate loops serving to engage buttons on the several garments supported. The clips E-E are formed of sheet metal and are attached to the elastic members B-B by being folded or bent upon the same, as shown in Figure 3. The clips E-E are fixed on the members BB and are not movable thereon.
In Figure 4, E shows the construction of these clips.
By making the members BB of elastic material, the shoulder strap will yield to movements of the body and by reason of the plurality of loops or eyelets GD, the strap will accommodate itself to persons of different stature, as well as serving to support more than one garment.
It will be seen by an inspection of the drawing that my device is very simple of construction, can be produced and sold at very slight cost due to the elimination of button holes, and can be adapted to a variety of uses such as shoulder straps, waist bands, belts, and the like.
Another advantage of my invention is that the elastic members hold the strap A under constant tension upon the shoulders of the wearer and thus help to prevent the strap from slipping down over the shoulders.
Having now described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is- 1. A shoulder strap for undergarments and the like comprising an inelastic intermediate webbing portion formed with a loop at each end, an elastic member for each end of the webbing of elongated form having the ends thereof overlapped, clips securing the overlapped cnds together and confined within the loop of the webbing and plurality of clips secured to the elastic member between the overlapped ends and intermediate portion of the elastic member and in spaced relation to provide a plurality of loops in the elastic member for selective engagements with garment buttons.
2. A shoulder strap for undergarments and the like comprising an inelastic intermediate webbing portion formed with a loop at each end, an elastic member for each end of the webbing of elongated form having the ends thereof overlapped, clips securing the overlapped ends together and confined within the loop of the webbing with the intermediate portions of the elastic member moved into contact and a plurality of clips secured to the contacting portions of the elastic member in spaced relation to provide a plurality of loops in the elastic member for selective engagement with garment buttons.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature.
RICHARD PONTON.
