PATENT oFFlcE F BBIDGETON, NEW
i @Amm Application illed April 25, 1932. Serial No. 807,441.
My invention relates to garments or articles of apparel for women and girls, such as slips, which are underwear. One object of my mvention is to provide such a garment having a. body covering or upper portion and a lower or skirt and leg covering portion which inv regard to the upper portion will conform or shape itself to' the body of thewearer around bust, waist and hips and which in regard to 1 the skirt portion, will retain its sha, preserving an even hemline or bottom e e and enable shadow-proofingand expansion to accommodate the natural movements of the wearer as in walking, bending, stoopmg, etc.
and which when the wearer is in an upright or standing position automatically contracts or drops back into normal position. Another object of my invention is to provide a construction of the nature just indicated which 3 will be economical of manufacture both in rebody of the wearer. However, that very property has the drawback that distortion or getting out of shape by stretching may spoil the .bottom edge or hemline and cause it to be irregular or uneven. Again, with bias'material for the lower` or leg-coveringl skirt ortion thereof, it is practically impossib e to provide shadow-proong or for opening or expansion which may be required to accommodate the leg or body movements of the wearer. I do not use material on the bias for the skirt portion of the garment but make the skirt of material on the straight.
Describing in detail what is shown in the drawing, the garment shown is a slip having an upper body or trunk covering portion 10,
view thereof but' with a of material cut on the`bias, this being indicated by the oblique or diagonally extending lines, and a skirt or leg-covering portion 11, that is on the straight of the material. Front and back of the bias body portion are substantially duplicates and are joined by vertical seams at the opposite sides, onl and the skirt is similarly of material on t e straight joined only by seams at the sides, with the front continuous from side to side and the back with a slit or placket-effect, that, at the center, includes Vtwo overlapping portions 12, free from one another from the top of theskirt, where the latter is joined to the body, to the bottom or hemline of the skirt, as clearly shown in Fig. 2, so that expanslon or opening from the leg or other movements of the body of the wearer can readily take place and yet when the wearer stands erect, the iaps will hang or fall vertically one over the other.
For shadow-proofing a strip of cloth or fabric 13, of suitable width is stitched or secured-on the inside of the central portion of the front of the skirt and which referably extends from top to bottom o the skilr'lll. l
e to or upper portion ofthe sli ma be the built- 1p shoulder arrangement Ishowii in Fig. l, or t e straight or`bodice top shown in Fig. 2 with simple shoulder straps.
Especially when the contours of the material are as shown in the drawing, a most economical use of material in that there isy virtually no waste, is possible, the cutting chartlbeing drawn so that oblique lines will extend across the same for the bias cuts and longitudinal and cross lines will run for the straight' cuts, and where small angular or other shaped pieces result, they may be used for the up r or shoulder part of the garment and gi' shoulder straps.
What I claim is An article of apparel comprising an upper body covering part and a skirt part, the upper part being of material set on the bias and the skirt part being of material set straight, the skirt having a verticall extending shadow-proof member of strip orm situated at the central portion of the front and the skirt at the back being divided vertically to provide adjacent normally overlapping free portions that open vand close to accommodate the posture of the wearer.
In testimony whereof I hereuntoraix my signature.
MAX C. SCHRANK.
