The invention relatesl to improvements in sawdust burners in which draft-stakes are used 1n conjunction with two metallic conj tainers; and the object of the improvement is to provide for the maintenance of a burning surface or re bank of fairly uniform area upon compact fuel for a maximum period of time with a minimum consumption of fuel.
One form of the invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a front view and Figure 2 is a top viewV of the entire burner. Figure 8 is a sectional view taken on the line 3 3 of Fig- 5- ure 2, illustrating the draft stakes in position, and Figure 4 is a detailed view in section showing the construction of one of the spacers.
The supporting legs 2 2 2 2 secured to the outside container 4, and the asbestos sheet 3 placed on the bottom of the said outside container 4 as shown in the drawing, being employed for the sole purpose of adapting the said sawdust burner for use as a heating stove, form no part `of the present invention. The inside fuel container 11 is a metallic drum or boX, open at the top, wedge-shaped at the front and circular-shapedat the back, having a draft hole 12, without a cover, adjacent to the bottom in front. rllhe outside container 4 is a larger metallic drum or box, wedge-shaped at the front andV circularshaped at the back, having a cover 5 to permit the removal of ashes and refueling, a draft hole 6, with an adjustable cover, adjacent to the bottom in front and similar in size and shape to the said draft hole 12 in the said inside fuel container 11, and a flue hole 7 adjacent to the bottom in the back opening into a smoke acket 8; the said smolre jacket 8 being attached to the back of the said outside container 4 in a perpendicular position, and having a check draft' hole 9, with an adjustable cover, on the side, and a smoke pipe connection 10 at the top. The said inside fuel container 11 is so placed inside of the said outside container 4 as to bring the said'draft holes 6 and 12 to a point where they are directly opposite each other.
A The said containers 11 and 4 differ in size and shape the one from the other sufficiently to provide an air jacket o-ver and around the said inside fuel container 11 ofa suciently greater width around the front than around the back of the said container 1l as to force the draft upon lea-ving the top of the said container' 11 to pass around the front and around the sides of the said container 11 before passing throughfthe said flue hole 7 The correct operating vposition ofthe said inside fuel container 11 required to bring the said draft holes 6 and 12 to a point where they are directly opposite each other, and to provide the proper variation in the width of the said air jacket around the said container 11, is indicated and established by the separators 13 (the extensions of the bolts for the said legs serving as the separators in this drawing).
' To operate the said sawdust burner, the said outside cover 5 is removed and two draftstakes 1 1, of the same size as the said draft holes 6 and 12, and of asuflicient length to facilitate handling, are employed for the purpose of ignition. One of 1 1 is'placed on the bottom of the said inside fuel container 11 from the front tothe back of the said container 11 by passing the said draft-stake through the said draft holes 6 and 12. The other of the said draft-stakes thesaid draft-stakes 1 1 is placed on .end upon the saidbottom draft-stake at a point slightly advanced from the center of the said container'll, and is held by the hand in a perpendicular position while the fuel is filled in and packed around the two said draft-stakes 1 1. The said perpendicular draft-stake and the said horizontal draft-stake are then respectively removed, leaving an open air passage or chimney hole through the said compact fuel between the said draft hole l2 and the top of the said inside fuel container 11, the sides of which air passage are then ignited by touching a lighted match to a small piece of paper placed inside of the said draft hole 12 and opening the said outside draft hole 6.
The fore part of the said inside fuel container 11 is wedge-shaped in order to give to the fuel in the front part of the said container 11V full access to the draft passing through the said draft hole 12; also to allovvl for a more even distribution of heat by permitting the said air passage or chimney to be molded at a point slightly advanced from the center of the said container 11, since the burning area or ire bank Within the point of the Wedge does not then dilfer greatly from the area of the arc-shaped lire bank assumed after the said lire bank has passed the said central point of the said container l1.
We claim:
The combination, in a sawdust burner, of two metallic containers,-one of Which containers is an outside container, Wedge-shaped at the front and circular-shaped at the back, having a cover to permit the removal of ashes and refueling, a. draft hole with an adjustable cover adjacent to the bottom in front, and a flue hole adjacent to the bottom in the back openingr into a smoke jacket, the said smoke jacket being attached to the back of the said outside container in a perpendicularposition and having a check draft hole with an adjustable-cover on the side and a smoke pipe connection at the top g-the other of which containers is an inside fuel container, open at the j top, having a draft hole Without a cover adjacent to the bottom in front similar tothe said draft hole in the said outside container; the said inside fuel container bein-gf Wedgeshaped at the front and circular-shaped at the back to give to the fuel full aocess'to the draft, and being of such a size and so placed inside of the said outside container as to bring the said draft holes to a point Where they are directly opposite each other and to provide an air jacket over and around the said inside fuel container, the Width of the said air jacket being sulfieiently greater around the front than around the back o-f the said container as to force the draft upon leaving the top of the said container to pass around the front and around the sides of the said container before passing through the said flue hole; and draft-stakes for molding an open air passage or chimney hole through compact fuel between the said inside draft hole and the top of the said inside fuel container.
