Patented Nov. 8, 1932 UNITED STATES PATENT F MAYER G. MONROE, 0F PORTLAND, OREGON, ASSIGNOR TO JANTZEN KNITILNG MILL, 0F PORTLAND, OREGON SWIMMING SUIT AppIication led October 2, 1931.
The invention relates to improvements in swimming suits and has for its'primary object the provision of an improved swimming suit which is readily adjustable to the peculiarities of the form and shape of different individuals.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a swimming suit of the character indicated, cut vlow in the back, especially adapted for female wear and so constructed and arranged as to be nicely adjusted to a smooth and comfortable fit to the body of the wearer.
Another object of the invention is .the provision of a swimming suit of the character indicated which is capable of economical pro.- duction and highly eilicient in use.
Other objects will appear hereinafter.
The invention consists in the combinations and arrangements of parts hereinafter' described and claimed.
The invention will be best understood by reference to the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification, and in which Fig. 1 is a front view of a swimming .suit constructed in accordance with the invention Fig. 2 a rear View thereof;
Fig. 3 a rear view of the suit with the rear central portion of the body member thereof broken away to show the underlying parts;
Fig. 4 a partialvertical section taken substantially on line 4-4 of Fig. 2; and
Fig. 5 an enlarged rear view of the upper portion of the suit with portions broken away and showing the parts in position of use.
The embodiment of the invention illustrated in the drawing comprises a body 10, which may be of the usual knitted material, con-.
structed in any desired or usual manner and provided with the usual lower skirt portion 11.
The said body is cut or shaped quite low in the back and in the form of a wide, downwardly concave curve, the upper rear edge thereof being provided with a wide hem forming tunnels 12, as indicated. spaced upward extensions 13 are provided at the front, which is cut relatively high as shown, the opposite sides of the low c ut back edge merging smoothly and tangentially as Two Serial No. 566,394.
indicated into the outer sides or edges of the extensions 13, and the tunnels 12 extending from the central rear portion up to the outer edges of the extensions 13.
The trunk member 15 may also be of any suitable knitted material and is provided with the usual or desired short leg members 16. At its front the trunk member 15 is attached by suitable stitching to the front waist portion of the body member 10, said stitching extending to the points 17 at each side of the body member. The entire rear portion of the trunk member 15 is free of the body member 10 and is cut as shown to be depressed at each side, curving thence upwardly and rearwardly to form an upward central extension which is attached to the rear ends of the shoulder straps 14, as best shown in Fig. 3. A draw string 18 is arranged in each of the tunnels 12, each draw string being anchored at its forward end to the corresponding body extension 13 and having its rear end protruding freely through the rear end of the corresponding tunnel 12.
By this arrangement a construction is provided by means of which the suit may be quickly and nicely adjusted to the peculiarities of the forni or figure of each individual wearer. In adjusting the suit, the same is first placed in position on the body of the wearer in the usual manner, with the draw strings 18 hanging loosely down the back, as indicated in Fig. 2. Then by drawing upon the draw strings the upper rear body portion may bevnicely and smoothly adjusted and fitted snugly to the body of the wearer, whereupon the draw strings are tied in a bow and tucked into the interior of the body member, as indicated by the dotted lines in Fig. 5. The adjustment thus effected may be maintained as long as the suit is worn by the same wearer and will be found to effect a grfect t.
y this arrangement a swimming suit may be provided especially adapted for female wear, having a relatively low cut back, and which may be nicely adjusted to the body of an individual vvearer` so as to cause the same to fit smoothly and without wrinkling.
`While I have illustrated and described the preferred form of construction for carrying my invention into effect, this is capable of variation and modification without departing from the spirit of the invention. I,
therefore, do not Wish to be limited to the precise details disclosed, but desire to avail myself of such variations and modifications as fall within the scope of the appended claims.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A swimming suit comprising a body member; a trunk member arranged Within y and attached to said body member at the front but free at the rear; shoulder straps attached to the front portion of said body member at the top thereof and to the rear top of said trunk member; .and means for adjusting the top of said body member.
2. A swimming suit comprising a body member; a trunk member arranged within and attached to said body member at the front but free at the rear; shoulder straps attached to the front portion of said body member at the top thereof and to the rear top of said trunk member; and draw strings for adjusting the top of said body member.
3. A swimming suit comprising a body member; a trunk member arranged within and attached to said body member at the front but free at the rear; shoulder straps attached to the front portion of said body member at the top thereof and to the rear top of said trunk member; and means for adjusting the top of said body member, said body member being cut said shoulder straps.
4. A swimming suit comprising a body member; a trunk member arranged Within and attached to said body member at the front but free at the rear; shoulder straps attached to the front portion of said body member at the top thereof and to the rear top of said trunk member; and draw strings for adjusting the top of the rear of said body member between said shoulder straps, said body member being cut low in the back between said shoulder straps.
5. A swimming suit comprising a body member; a trunk member attached to said body member at the front but free at' the rear; shoulder straps attached to the top front portion of the body member and to the rear top of said trunk member, said Abody member being cut low in the back between said shoulder straps; tunnels formed at each side of the top of the back portion of said body member extendingfrom the central rear portion up to the shoulder straps at the front thereof; and draw strings in said tunnels secured therein at their forward ends but protruding therefromV at their rearward ends.
