2 Claims.

This invention relates to improvements in garments.

One of the several objects of the invention is to provide a garment of the shoulder strap type wherein a single strap serves the two-fold purpose to suspend the garment from the shoulders of a wearer and to act as a belt.

Another feature resides in a garment wherein a single strap and its association with a garment acts to facilitate adjustment of the garment to the body of a wearer.

A further object of the invention is the pro-v vision of a suspender type garment in which the free ends of the suspender straps are crossed at the back and brought around to the front of the garment at the waist portion thereof for the convenience of tying and which is easily accessible particularly for children when the invention is embodied in children's garments.

A still further object'of the inventionis the provision of a suspender type garment which eliminates the use of buttons, buckles, clasps, and other like fastening devices for securing the strap in an adjusted position, and which are a source of concern due to loss caused by strains imparted thereto by the natural body movements of a wearer.

With these and other objects in view, the invention resides in the certain novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts, the essential features of which are hereinafter fully described, are particularly pointed out in the appended claims, and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which:

Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved garment upon a wearer and looking at the front thereof.

Figure 2 is a similar view but looking at the rear.

Figure 3 is a side elevational view.

Figure 4 is a front elevational view of the garment per se with parts broken away in section.

Figure 5 is a rear elevational view of the garment per se with parts broken away.

Figure 6 is an enlarged detail vertical sectional view through the hem at the neck portion of th garment.

Referring to the drawing by reference characters, the numeral Ill designates my. improved garment in its entirety and which includes a lower garment part II in the style of shorts, although I do not wish to restrict myself to this particular style of garment part, as the same may be in the form of a dress, bathing trunk, trousers or the like. Extending. upwardly from the front of the lower garment part II is-an upper garment part l2 which is open at the sides and back. The side edges of the upper garment part I 2 are shaped so as to snugly conform to the curvature or contour I of the body of a wearer, and the top edge is provided with a hem I3. The top of the upper gar-- ment part I2 is narrower than the remainder portion of the upper garment part and forms the neck line of the garment when in position upon a 10 wearer.

Freely passing through the hem I3 is the intermediate portion of a single strap ll, the end portions of the strap extending rearwardly and crossed as at IE to provide shoulder straps I. 15 Loops or eyes I! are provided at opposite sides of the garment at the waist portion thereof and through which the free ends of the strap respectively pass in a direction from back to front. the free ends being brought around the front of the waist portion of the garment and tied as at l8, thus imparting the appearance of a belt to the front of the garment.

In practice, the garment is donned when in the position shown in Figures 4 and 5, the wearer g5 stepping into the lower garment part II and bringing the shoulder straps l6 over the shoulders as shown in Figure 2. After entering the garment in this manner, the wearer pulls upon the free ends of the strap to tension the strap causing so a gathering of the upper part of the garment part l2, the tension placed upon the strap being sufiicient to effect an adjustment of the garment vertically upon the body of a wearer. After pullingthe loose ends of the strap to the desired ten- 35 sion, the same are tied at the front as shown in Figure 1 of the drawing. I

The construction of this garment eliminates the necessity of reaching to the rear to effect fastening of the garment upon the body of a do wearer and a child with the knowledge of tying a knot may don the garment or remove the same without the aid of an older person.

In the drawing, the lower garment part II at the waist portion at the top, rear is provided with 45 a hem through which an elastic strap I! passes and is secured at the ends thereof under tension for causing the rear of the lower garment part to appear gathered and adjustably fit the back of the wearer at the waist line thereof. 50

As before stated, I do not wish to limit myselfto the style of garment shown and described, as the invention is equally adaptable to bathing suits, sun suits, beach pajamas and the like.

While I have shown and described what I deem 56 to be the ost practical embodiments of my invention,.changes and modifications whichcome within'th'e scope of the appended claims may be ment part, a single strap having its intermediateportion slidably connected to the top of said upper front garment part, the free ends of said 7 strap extending rearwardly and crossed at the back, and loops secured to the waist portion of the garment adjacent the sides thereof through which the respective free ends of said strap pass to facilitate passage of the free ends across the front of the garment and the connection of said free ends at the front.

2. A- self adjustable garment comprising a lower garment part and an upper garment part open at the back and connectedto said lower garment secure by Letters part; a-hem at the top of the front of said upper garment part, a strap freely passing through said hem, the free ends of said strap extending rearwardly and downwardly in crossed relation at the back to provide shoulder loops above the 5' point of crossing of said strap, and loops adjacent the sides of said garment at the waist portion thereof through which therespective free ends of said strap pass in a direction toward each other at the front of the garment. the meeting 10 ends of said strap being tied together to secure-the strap in a tensioned condition when the garment is upon a wearer to cause a gathering of the hem and eifect adjustment of the garment to the body of a wearer, a hem provided in the top of the back 15 of said lower garment part, and an elastic strap having its ends fastened under tension at the ends of said last mentioned hem and extending therethrough to efiect a gathering of the top of said lower garment part at the rear. 20
