Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 188,588, dated March 20, 1877; application filed July 28, 1876.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, CHARLES C. CHAMBER- LAIN, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in File-Boxes or Document-Cases; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, complete, and exact description of the forms, construction, and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, in which- Figure l is a diagram of the form of cutting and creasing the material, and preparing the same for folding, 8m. 7 Fig. 2 is a perspective View of the outer case, envelope, or box-draw er as folded and fastened together complete.

Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the inner envelope, case, or box-drawer folded and fastened together complete, with a drawing-ring inserted in and through the front end thereof, and the inner tin or metal stifteninglining, a ring being one of the forms of handle used for opening the combined case, envelope, or drawer. Figs. 4. and 5 show some of the dif ferent forms and sizes of the complete portable eases, envelopes, and box-drawers. Fig. 6 is a perspective view of the metallic backing-plate with flanged ends; and Fig. 7 is a longitudinal vertical section of a portion'of the. inner box, showing the flanged backingplate in its normal position.

The cases or files are cut in a rectangular form from the material, as shown in Fig. l, by knife or saw, according to the black lines, all at once, or in one operation, and prepared by creasing the same with two parallel lines or creases, indented or creased into the material, according to the size and form thereof, to facilitate easy and correct folding of the same, and assisting such folding by a slight cut into the center or on the sides of such creases, to relieve the rigidity of the material. Such creases form the length and thickness of the cases, with the cross-line at right angles with the said parallel lines, making the height and a breadth of the case, thus leaving one end of the same open. A. piece of tin, A, is then secured upon the back of the front of the inner or drawer case, and of the outer or enveloping case, corresponding in size with such front or back, and enough larger on the sides thereof to turn over the side edges, and bend upon the material, as at '00, Figs. 6 and 7, to secure the same in its position, both to strengthen and stiffen such ends, and furnish a secure hold for the handle, button, or ring to draw the same.

In the folding, after placing the tin end or ends, the whole, in a single piece, is folded into shape, as described, and the sides securely glued or fastened together, being double in material on the sides, and treble at the back of the outer case, giving stifiness and strength to the sides, and greater durability in wear.

The two cases are cut, creased, and folded in like form and manner, except that the inner case is cut away on the top part, so as to expose freely the back part of the interior, and part of the length of any contents thereof, both for convenience of filing and examining such contents. The inner case being then inserted into the other case completes the box, case, or envelope-the said cases, either the inner case separately, or the two in combination, to be also used in combination with any other receptacle, vault, or pigeon-hole, or other place for the keeping of articles, documents, or papers thus inclosed or filed.

What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- The combination of a box, constructed substantially as described, with a metallic strengthening-strip, having flanges a: an interposed between the heads A A and their interior flaps C C, as shown andset forth.
