FORMy FOR SHAPING AND DRYING HOSIERY AND THE LIKE Filed Jan. 21. 1929 BY WM5 ATTORNE S.
Patented Oct. 25, 1932 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE JOHN W. DENNIS, 0F PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR TO THE PHILA- DELPHIA DRYING MACHINERY COMPANY, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA, A Z f CORPORATION OF PENNSYLVANIA FORM FOR SHAPIING AND DRYING HOSIERY AND THE 'LIKEy Application filed January 21, 19297Sera1 No. 334,086.
This invention relates to forms useful in shaping and drying knitted articles such as hosiery, and more particularly to shaping and drying formsY heated from within as by electricity.
In the main, mywinvention is directed toward enabling adaptation of forms of the character referred to so that articles of different sizes can be shaped by them, and toward attaining this desideratum withoutimpairment in the heating efficiency of the forms, through provision of simple, inexpensive and easily adjusted means for the purpose.
Other objects and attendant advantages will appear from the detailed description which follows when taken in connection with the drawing whereof Fig. I is a side elevation of a hosiery shaping and drying form conveniently embodying my invention.
Fig. II is a fragmentary detail View, on
a larger scale, with parts broken away to show the interior construction of the form at the heel region; and,
Fig. III is a cross sectional view, taken as indicated by the arrows III-III in Fig. II.
For convenience of delineation herein I have shown my invention as embodied in a hosiery shaping and drying form, whereof the body is designated by the numeral 10, the same having the thin flat profile configuration which is to be imparted to the stockings. In the present instance, the form 10 is constructed with side wall members 11 of sheet metal which are separated by a perimetric edge strip 12-likewise of sheet metal-with provision of a coextensive hollow at the interior. The several parts of the structure are secured together at inter-k vals by screws or rivets 13 with the perimetric strip 12 projecting marginally as at 14 to provide a comparatively sharp creasing edge substantially all around the form. Within the hollow of the form body 10 is placed an electric heating element `formed by winding a resistance wire or tape 15 about a thin flat insulating core piece 16, of asbestos or the like, having the same general configuration as the form itself, together with outer sheets 17 of insulatory material to preheel piece with the bottom and opposite en 'walls of the slot 22, respectively.
from' within the form 10. It is also imporjvent short circuitin g of the winding, all more or lessafter common practicein this art.
In suiting the construction ofa form such as 'just brieiiydescribed to the purposes of my invention I make in the perimetric strip C 412, for example at the heel region', a recession 20, with formation between the rounded heelcheeks 21 of the side wallmembers 11,
vof an isolated edge slot 22. Within this edge slot 22 I place',-with capacity for movement 'i60 from vthe substantially retracted normal position, shown in dotted lines in Fig. II, to projected full line position, a supplemental heel piece23 fashioned to sectoral shape with of a screw 25 having its Ahead occupying a surface recess in one of the heel cheeks 21,;*
and itsthreadedend engaging a nut 26 with a head similarly recessed in the other heel cheek 21 of the form, see Fig.v III. From Fig.v II it'will be noted that the screw-25 is so located as to determine swinging of thef7 heel piece 23 to the positions already indicated, the movement being Vlimited in either direction through contact of the radial edges and the adjoining arcuate portions of said When small stockings are to be shaped and dried, thensupplemental heel piece 23 is obviously'placed in the normal dotted line posi- 5 r`line position, thereby adding to the length of: the foot as required. By virtue 0f direct contact of the supplemental heelpiecef23 'with the'cheeks 21of the side plates 1.1, the
same is effectively heated through conduction tant to Anote in this connection that drying of the portion of thestocking stretched across the unoccupied part of the slot 22 (withthe supplemental heel piece in either retracted or projected position)l is insured through actiongmo of heat radiating outward through said slot.
II, out of the way within theV18 7 Y Y1,883,883V
VHaving thus described' my invention, I
claim: l 1. A'form for shaping hosiery comprising a. profile body; and a sectoral piece eccen- '5 tricallyfpivoted within an edge slot in the Y. heel rgionvof body with voalzvacity for movementfrorn a normal substantially enclosed position within said edge slot to parially projected position tolengthen the toot ,omamby aaweihecferzmforakingsof dil'erent foot lengths. f
Y 2.` A foi-Infory shaping and drying articles Y such as hosiery comprising :an internally` heated hollow ,profile bodyV with side wall 15 plates separated byr a perimetri@ spacing and aiSectoral-heel piece substantiallyenc sed normally in an isolated .edge slot of thebody formed between-said side wall plates l Y by av recession inthe perimetrie strip, said n .heel .piece having capacity for limited pivotalnwvement outwards .to adapt the form l Y for articles of different: foot lengths.
