OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA, A CORPORATION OF PENNSYLVANIA SHAP NG AND DRYING FORM Application filed February 1, 1929. Serial No. 336,714.
This invention relates to shaping and drying forms, and more particularly to forms of the internally heated type such as are extensively used in shaping and drying hosiery. In connection with shaping and drying forms of the specific kind referred to we aim to enable, throughprovision of simple and easily adjustable means for-the purpose, their adaptation to stockings with feet of different sizes; and to attain this end without impairment in the drying efiiciency of such forms.
One way in which the foregoing as well as other important advantages can be readily realized in practice will appear in the course of the detailed description following of the typical embodiment of this invention delineated in the drawing, whereof Fig. I shows a fra mentary elevtion of our improved dry- 3 ing and shaping form. I
- Fig. II is a longitudinal sectional View of the toe portion of the form,.on a larger scale, taken along its medial plane.
Fig. III" is a fragmentary sectional view taken as indicated by the arrows III-III in Fig. II.
"Fig. IV is a fragmentary sectional view through the medial plane ofvthe form like Fig. II but" of the heel and ankle portion; and y i 1 V is a sectional view taken as indicated by the arrows VV in Fig. IV.
In the shaping and drying form chosen for the purposes of illustrationherein, the side walls 6, are fashioned fromplate metal to :a profile configuration corresponding generally to that of the stockings which are to be shaped, and spaced apart by a perimetric strip 7 with provision of a hollow for acco1nmodating, in the present instance, a conventional form of electric heating element 8, said strip having slight marginal projection as at 9 to serve as a CI'QELSlDg edge. A departure from usual practice in the construction of the form will however be noted in that the perimetric strip 7 terminates short of the toe tip'as at- 10 (Fig. II), and, moreover, that it is formed with a recession 11 (Fig. IV) at the heel and ankle portion. The slots 12, 13 defined in the medial plane of the form be tween the side wall plates 6 at the designated regions, by virtue of the described arrange nent, are occupied respectively by independently adjustable, toe and heel pieces 14, 15 through which the form can be adapted to stockings of different sizes in; the manner presently explained.
From Figs. II, III it willbe noted that the toe piece 14 is struck from plate metal corresponding in gage substantially to that of the .perimetric strip 7 so as to contact intimately P with the side wall plates 6, and be thereby efiectively heated through conduction. It will moreover be noted that the toe piece 14 is three sided, and that its edges are outwardly curved with provision ofthree different toe ends 14a, 14b, 14c. At the center, the toe piece has an opening 16 from which radiate longitudinally of the toe ends 14a, 14b, 140,
slots 16a, 166, 160 of different lengths. The
.toe piece 14 is held in the assembly by means as a consequence of the variation in the length of the slots 16a, 16b and 160, a different ex- .tent of projection is determined for each of the toe ends 14a 14b and 140, with corresponding lengthening or shortening of toe in accordance with the. selection. In this" connection it is to be noted that, through cooperation as between the slots 16a, 16b and 160, and the studs 17,18, the toe piece 14 is locked against displacement in adjusted positions,
and also that the condition of interlock'is maintained in all instances under the pull of the stocking incidental to clothing the form. Like thetoe piece 14:, the heel piece 15 (Figs. IV and V) is fashioned from plate metal of a gage to insure intimate heat conducting contact with the heel cheeks of'the side wall plates 6. As shown, the heel piece 15 has an extended portion 15awhich reaches into the ankle portion of the slot 13 Where it has loose pivotal connection with a stud 19" By rotating the toe piece 14 extending crosswise of the side wall plates 6. The heel piece 15 is thus swingable outwardly through the slot 13 to lengthen the foot of the form at that end. Forthe purpose of locking the heel piece 15 in different positions of projection, we provide it with an arcuate slot 20, having its center of curvature approximately at the pivot 19 andrformed with a series of notches 20a for selective registry with a stud 21 extending crosswise between the heel checks of the side wall plates 6, said heel piece being automatically held against displacement in selected'positions of the form may be adapted to stockings of differentsizes and shapes.
