Description

Sept. 13,-1932. J, w. DENNIS FORM FOR DRYING HOSIERY AND THE LIKE Filed April 19. 1929 INVENTOR: Jbhn Wflenzus,
ATTORNEYS Patented Sept. 13, 1932 omrso STATES A NT OFFI E JOHN W. DENNIS, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR TO THEPI'IILADEL- PI-IIA DRYING MACHINERY COMPANY, 01 PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA; ACOR- PORATION OF PENNSYLVANIA FORM r03 DRYING HosIERY AND THE [LIKE Application filed April 19,
This invention relates to forms useful in drying and shaping articles of textile manufacture such as hosiery and the like.
The object of my invention is to provide a drying and shaping form of the kind referred to capable of adapting itself to the article which is to be dried to the advantage that the form may be employed in drying like articles varying in size, for example, stockings with feet of different lengths.
How the foregoing desideratum can be conveniently attained in practice will be manifest from the detailed description following of the typical embodiment of this invention, shown in the accompanying draw.- ing; whereof, Fig. I is a fragmentary View of my improved drying form.
F ig. II is a fragmentary View, on a larger scale, showing a section through the medial plane of the structure.
Fig. III is an edge elevation, viewed in the direction of the arrows IIIIII in Fig.
II; and,
Fig. IV is a transverse sectlonal view, taken as indicated by the arrows IV-IV in Fig. II.
5 of metal, which, in the present instance, is suitably configured for shaping and drylng long or ladies hosiery. At the heel and ankle region, the body 5 affords an edge slot 6 which is occupied by an extensile elbow portion or heel piece 7, having pivotal connection 8 in the ankle region. This extensile piece 7 is yieldingly urged outward through the edge slot 6, by a spring 9 with its upper end normally engaging an abutment 10 in said slot. The extensile piece 7 is thus afforded capacity for yielding to depression into the edge slot 6 as a stocking is drawn over the form, thereby automatically adapting the latter to the stocking and enabling use of'the form for shaping and drying stockings of different sizes, i. e. stockings having different foot lengths.
The body 5 may be constructed in any con venient manner, for example through uniting two pre-shaped oppositely dished side wall members 560, 5b of sheet metal as by welding the abutting edges of such members,
as at 11 in Figs. II and IV.
The isolated 1929. Serial No. 356,414.
edge slot 6 for the extensile heel piece 7 may be formed through incident placement between the body side members 5, of a partitioning strip 12 which is preferably incorporated in the structure, likewise by welding it the ends, as at 13 in Fig. II, and along the sides, as at 14 in Fig. IV. As shown in Fig. II, the partitioning strip 12 is recessed at 15 to receive the pivotal end of the extensile heel piece 7, and the form apertured transversely at the designated locality for passage of a flush headed pivot rivet or screw 16. For convenience, I permanently attach the spring 9 to the extensile heel piece 7 as by welding or swedging the laterally turned end 17 of one of its legs into a notch 18 in said heelpiece. To insure against lateral fleXure and more effective functioning of the free arm of the spring 9, I provide a guide groove 19 for it in the partitioning strip 12, see Figs.
II and IV. This construction and arrangement is obviously conducive to economic manufacture of the form, and, moreover facilitates assembling.
The form may be heated internally by steam or hot water, or by an electric heating element placed within its hollow body as desired, or found most convenient, in practice.
It is to be expressly understood that, within the scope of my invention, yielding extensile provisions may be made in regions other than at the heel of a stocking form such as herein exemplified; nor is said invention to be regarded as limited to hosiery drying and shaping forms alone.
Having thus described my invention, I claim:
1. A hosiery drying form comprising a profile body, and a pivoted'spring influenced heel piece projecting outward through an edge slot of the body, said heel piece being restrained as regards outward movement by an abutment in the slot but having capacity for yielding as a stocking is drawn over the form thereby to automatically adapt the latter to the stocking. v
2. A hosiery drying form comprising a profile body, a heel piece pivoted at the ankle region for limited projection outward through an edge slot of the body, a U-shaped spring having one leg secured to the heel piece and the other engaging a guide groove in the form for capacity to yield as a stocking is drawn over said form and thereby to automatically adapt the latter to the stock mg.
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto signed my name at Philadelphia, Pennsyl- Vania, this 13th day of April, 1929.
JOHN W. DENNIS.
