To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FREDERICK M. YOGEL, a citizen of the UnitedStates, residing at Pittsfield, county of Berkshire, State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Electrically- I-Ieated Hosiery-Forms, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to electrically heated forms for drying hosiery and the like and has for its object the provision of a device of the character which will eflectually dry thehose and give them a neat appearance and at the same time reduce the cost of the operation.
In the drying of hoseas hereto-fore practised, it has been customary to provide a form for each stocking, generally made of wood. The stockings were drawn over a wooden board and then placed in a horizontal position in a drymg box which was heated by steam. .In order that the stockings will appear to the customer as rights and lofts, it is necessary to have the seams of each air lie on opposite sides of the fold so that if the stockings were laid together the seams would be on the inside.
In carrying out my invention I provide a form which is more durable in character and which dispenses with theheating chamber. This I accomplish by providing an electrically heated form, .preferably made of metal. In order to avoid the necessity of having a different form for each size of hose, I provide a novel arrangement whereby the tips are removable so that the same'form may be used for several sizes by simply changing the tips.
Another feature of my invention lies in the provision of a groove in the form into which the seal will naturally and easily fall without the exercise of any skill on the part of the operator. The result is that the operator may perform the boarding operation much more rapidlyand the result will be likewise improved. The initial cost, as well as the maintenance cost, will also be reduced.
Other objects tion will appear in the course of the following specification, in which I have shown my invention embodied in concrete form for purposes of illustration.
Figure 1 illustrates a assembled apparatus; Fig. 2 a front elevaand purposes of my invenside elevation of the tion partly broken away; and Figs. 3, 4, 5 and 6 represent details of construction.
Referring to the drawings for a better understanding of my invention, 10 represents a base or bracket which may be of cast iron or brass, upon which the hosiery form is mounted. The bottom surface of this bracket is arranged at an angle with the flange 11--so that when the form is in operative position it will be inclined downwardly during the operation so as to facilitate the placing of the stocking on the form. The form proper is heat insulated from the flange of the bracket and secured thereto by wing nuts 12,- as shown. The form shown in the drawings consists of two plates 13, preferably of sheet metal or similar material which may easily be cleaned and will not be permanently stained. These plates are formed, as shown'in the drawings, so as to correspond with the shape of the hose when they are in their finished form. Between the plates is arranged the resistance unit which consists of a zig-zagged resistance conductor 14 running throughout the length of the form. As shown in the drawing, the
- conductor is so arranged at the heel and toe so as to heat these parts somewhat more than the remainder of the foot portion. The unit is insulated from the plates by sheets of mica or other insulating material 15. The plates with the resistance conductor and insulation between them are then secured together in any desired manner, as, for instance, by means of the rivets 16.
In order that the form may be suitable for several sizes of hose, I have provided means for lengthening the foot of the stocking in a simple manner. In order .to accomplish this I provided a removable tip. Thus several tips can be provided for each form, each differing from the other only as to length, as seen in means may be provided for securing this tip in place. One method of accomplishing this consists in providing each of the plates with integral. extensions- 17 which are-cut down so as to be thinner than the main portion of the plate and substantially V-shaped, as shown in Fig. 4:. The tip proper consists of two outside plates 18 between which is riveted the spacer 19 having the shape of the extension 17 This tip may then slip over the extensions and be held in place by the Figs. 3 and 6. Various screw 20.. The device which will be supplied will have the same construction and the same width at the base line, but will have a different length from the base line to the point.
In the finishing of the hose it is customary to provide the seams for the hose along the edge of the fold. This has heretofore been done by the operator simply by the eye without any guide whatever. In order to make, it easier for the operator to properly arrange the seam and also to improve the appearance, I provide a groove 21 extending along the back of the stocking, as shown. This groove may be of suflicient depth to receive the seam and is as close to the edge as practicable. It will be understood, of course, that the form for the right stocking will differ from the form for the left stocking, entirely in that the groove in one case will be in one plate ,while in another case it will be in a corresponding-position in the other plate. In order to -make electrical connection with the conductor 14 I provide an attach- 7 ing plug 22 adaptedto fit through the slot in the base and engage with the terminal pins 23 in a well-known manner.
In the operation of my device a number of these forms are arranged side by side and inclined away from the operator. The operator proceeds ,alongth e row and pulls the stockings over'the forms with the seams in the grooves. The current being on the device all the time performs the heating in a very short time and the stocking is dried and ready to be removed. The two stockings constituting a pair are then laid together with the seams .inside.
It will be seen that I have provided a simple and effective means for finishing hose whereby the operation may be performed rapidly without injury to the hosiery. By
employing metal, the forms are not stained by the different dyes in the stockings and likewise are not so easily broken. The pro vision of the groove for the seam facilitates the operation while the provision of the removable tip greatly reduces the'first cost of the equipment.
While I have described my invention as embodied in concrete form and as operating in a specific manner, it should be understood that I do not limit my invention thereto, since various modifications thereof will suggest themselves to those skilled in the art without departing from the spirit of my invention, the scope of which is set forth in the annexed claims.
. What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is
1. A device for drying hosiery and the like, comprisin an electrically heated metallic form having interchangeable toe por- 'tions.
2. A device for dryinghosiery and the like, comprising a metallic form composed of two plates secured together, a resistance conductor between. said plates, and interchangeable toe portions for said form.
3. A device for drying hosiery and the like, comprising an electrically heated metallic form having a groove for the seam on one side thereof adjacent the edge.
4. A device for drying hosiery and the like, comprising an electrically heated metallic form and a groove for the seam extending around the side thereof.
5". A device for drying hosiery and the like, comprising a metallic form composed of two plates secured together, a resistance conductor between said plates, interchangeable toe portions for said form, and a conductor extending into said form and said toe portions. v
6. A device for drying hosiery and the like, comprising a metallic form composed of two plates secured. together, a resistance conductor between said plates, interchangeable toe portions for said form, a conductor extending into said form and said toe portions, and a groove for the seam on one side of the form adjacent the edge.
