SMOKER S DEVICE Filed Aug. 11, 1931 INVEN TOR.
A TTORNEYS.
Patented Oct. 18, 1932 EDWARD GOLDBERG, OF. SHAKER HEIGHTS, OHIO SMOKERS nnvlcn Application filed August 11, 1931. Serial No. 556,398.
This invention relates to smokers devices,
. and more particularly to implements for use with tobacco articles having anencased filler such as cigars, cigarettes, and the like; and it is among the objects of the invention to provide a device for penetratin the filler for opening up a draft channel. Another object is the provision of a device presenting a mouth-piece and a filler-impaling member. A further object is the provision of a sealing surface for the end of the cigar or cigarette or the like, in association with the impaling member. Other objects and advantages will appear as the description proceeds.
To the accomplishment of the foregoing and related ends, the invention, then, comprises the features hereinafter fully described and particularly pointed out in the claims, the following description and the annexed drawing setting forth in detail certain illustrative embodiments of the invention, these being indicative however, of but a few of the various ways in which the principle of the invention may be employed.
In said annexed drawing:
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of an embodiment of the invention Fig. 2 is a similar view of the same in position on the end of a c1gar;.
Fig. 3 is a similar view as applied to a cigarette; and Figs. 4, 5, 6 and 7 are perspective views of modified forms. 7 7
Referring more particularly to the drawing, there is shown a cigar C (Fig. 2), and
a cigarette 0 (Fig. 3), with a device M inaccordance with the present invention applied thereto. In its construction, this embodies a spud for penetrating into the filler of a cigar, cigarette, cheroot, stogy, or like article, and such spud may take theform of a stem-like member 2 of asize to suitably penetrate the end of the cigar or the like,
as indicated. A bore or perforation 3 extends through such spud, and a mouth-piece 4 extends, usually by integral construction, therefrom, the bore terminating at the inner end of the mouth-piece. An enlargement or flange 5 is ordinarily desirable for assisting in holding the mouth-piece against displace ment in the smokers mouth.
A sealing surface 6 affords an abutment with this invention, whether molded compoand closure of the end of the cigar or the like, thereby confining the draft through the proper draft channel provided by the device:- Desirably, the sealing surface may be recessed or cupped, whereby the cigar or cigarette when impaled by the point 2 will seat snugly in the sealing recess.
From the foregoing, the manner of use of the device will be readily understood. The H point or impaling member 2 is forced into the end of the cigar or cigarette or the like, and the latter is forced into close'contact in the cup recess 6, and the cigar or cigarette may then be lighted and used as customary, the device providing a convenient and sanitary holder, which not only keeps the wrapper dry and intact, but also insures an even and satisfactory draft-channel.
By slightly tapering the spud 2, or at least the end thereof, entry into the tobacco filler is facilitated. In some cases, the spud or impaling member may be formed with a slant or quill-like end 7 as illustrated in Fig. 4. If it be desired to further insure holding of the device against displacement in the filler, withdrawal-inhibiting means may also be incorporated. This may'take the form of shoulders, outstanding asin Figs. 5 and 7, or recessed in the form of notches 8 as in Fig. 6. The outstanding form of shoulder may embody ribs 9, Fig. 5, extending around the impaling member annularly, or as shown in Fig. 7, the rib formation may be a spiral thread 10. In the latter case, introduction of the spud into the filler is facilitated by a twisting movement.
Various materials may be employed in the construction of the device as in accordance sitions, mineral, or other material. Particularly advantageous usage may be made of wood, and in such case, as well as with the cheaper molded compositions, the device may. be thrown away and be substituted by a new one at frequent intervals without appreciable expense. Obviously also, the style of finish, coloration, etc. may be varied in accordance with any particular requirements or desires. Other modes of applying the principle of the invention may be employed, change be- 1 ing made as regards the details described, provided the means stated in any of the following claims, or the equivalent of such, be employed.
I therefore particularly point out and distinctly claim as my invention:
1. A smokers device, comprising a mouth- 7 piece and an impaling member extending therefrom having notches.
2. A smokers device, comprising a mouth piece having a sealing recess and an impaling member extending therefrom having withdrawal-inhibiting notches.
3. A smokers device, comprising a mouthpiece and an impaling member extending therefrom having Withdrawal-inhibiting shoulders at an angle of substantially 90 to the axis of said member.
Signed by me this 7th day of August, 1931.
V EDWARD GOLDBERG.
