O. E. FREED TOILET ARTICLE Filed July 25, 1931 2 Sheets-Sheet 2 INVENTOR ATTORNEY Patented a. 11. 1932 PATENT OFFIC OSCAR E. FREED, OF SEATTLE,- WASHINGTON rornmaarrcnn 4 Application filed July 25, 1931. Serial No. 553,174.
This invention relates to improvements in toilet articles, and more particularly to vanity cases.
One of the prime objects of the invention is to provide a case capable of holding cos metics and provided with a mirror and an electric bulb so arranged that when the case is opened the bulb may be lighted.
A further object of the invention is to provide a simple and compact box-like casing of such shape and form as tobe conveniently inserted in a pocket or handbag.
The invention also comprehends improvements in the details of construction and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter described and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 is a perspective view of the vanity case, showing the cover closed.
Figure-2 is a similar view showing the cover partially open.
Figure 3 is a plan view with the cover shown wide open to more readily illustrate the constructlon and arrangement of the parts.
Figure 4 is a Figure 3.
Figure 5 is a side elevation of the cosmetic container.
Figure 6 is a detail edge view of the reflector arranged in the casing in association with the electric bulb.
Figure 7 is a sectional view on the line 5-5 of Figure 1.
Figure 8 is a detail view partially in section illustrating the push button and contact to form the circuit for operating the bulb.
Referring to the drawings, 1 indicates the body portion of the casing, provided at one end with a hinged cover 2. Mounted in the section'on the line 44 of cover is a mirror 3 held in position by a,
7 indicates a lamp bulb support comprising a base8 and a vertical flange 9, and from the latterextends a threaded socket 10. In the base plate 8 are formed bayonet slots 11 which cooperate with headed studs 12 mounted in the bottom ofthe body portion of the casing. Mounted in the body portion of the casing between the flange 9 and the end wall of the casing is a transverse partition 14 having a central depressed portion 15 and end legs 16. The end legs frictionally engage the side walls of the body portion of the casing, while the central depressed portion accommodates a lamp bulb 17 screwed into the socket 10 and acts as a reflector for the rays of light from the bulb. The partition is further held in place between the end wall of the body portion of the casing and the bulb support by the flange 9 impinging the edge of said partition.
Fixed in the bottom of the body portion of the casing is a resilient clamp 19 which receives a battery 20, one terminal 21 of the same engaging the end ofv the lamp bulb, as shown best in Figures 3 and 4 of the drawings. Fastened to the inside wall of the body portion of the casing is a resilient contact arm 22 having its end bent inwardly adjacent to andadapted tocooperate with the other terminal '23 of the battery. Secured to the free end of the contact arm 22 is a push button 25 which extends through an opening in the wall of the body portion of the casing, the opening being surrounded by insulation, as shown at 26. A
' 27 indicates a partition having side depending, resilient flanges 28, a resilient depending flange 29 at the front end, and two rearwardly extended lips 30 at the opposite end. Secured to the partition 27 are two receptacles 31 which receive cosmetics. The partition is located over the battery and the lamp socket, the lips 30 fitting under the wings of the partition 15, the flanges 28 snug- 0 1y engaging the sides of the body portion of the casing, and theflanges 29 engaging the front flange of the body portion of the casmg.
The battery is substantially equal in thickness to the depth of the body portion of the casing, while the mirror in the cover is considerably less in thickness than the depth of the walls of the cover so-that when the cover is thrown over on the body portion the cosmetic rece tacles are received within the space forme by said cover, making a compact and convenient arrangement.
In use, the catch 32 between the body portion of the casing and the cover is released and the cover can be thrown in convenient position to use the mirror, for instance as shown in Figure 2, or, if preferred, the covor can be thrown wide 0 en, asshown m Figure 4, and if light is esired the button 25 can be pushed to make contact w1th the terminal 23 of the battery and the lamp bulb li hted. The central depressed portion 15 0% the partition l4; serves as a reflector for the light, which affords a convenient arrangement when one is using the cosmetics and the mirror.
While I have shown and described a par- .ticular form of embodiment of my invention,
I am aware that many minor changes will readily suggest themselves to those skilled in the art without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention. I, therefore, desire to avoid being limited to the particular form of embodiment which I have hereinabove shown and described.
What I claim is I 1. A vanity case comprising a casing, a lamp support in the casing including a base and a vertical flange formed with a lamp socket, a lamp supported in the socket, the base having slots, studs in the bottom of the casing and fitting in the slots to secure the support, a partition located between the end wall of the casing and the vertical flange of the support, sai partition having end legs which engage the side walls of the casing and further formed with a central depression which receives the lamp to form a reflector, a battery in the casing, one terminal of which engages the end of the lamp, a contact on the casing to cooperate with the other terminal of the battery, a partition located in the casing over the battery and extending from the front wall of the casing to the first mentioned partition the second mentioned partition having side flanges to engage the side walls of the casing and an end ange to engage the front wall of the casing, and two rearwardly extending lips to engage under the first mentioned partition.
2. A vanity case comprising a casing including a main body portion and a hinged cover, a partition in the main body portion at one end thereof, said partition having a central depression, a second partition in the body portion extending from the first men'- tioned partition to the forward end of the casing" and in the same horizontal plane as the first mentioned partition, lips extending from the second mentioned partition and fitting under the first mentioned partition, both said partitions having depending side flanges to frictionally hold the partitions in place,
a lamp support in the casing below the partitions, a lamp extending from said sup on and extending into the depression, and a attery in the casing below the second mentioned partition to light the lamp.
In testimony whereof I aflix mgrsignature.
,OSCAR E. REED.
