ILLUMINATED COMPACT Filed Dec. 17, 1940 2 Sheets-Sheetv 2 Inventor Homey `Patented Jan. 20, 1942 Richard Klarfield, New York, N. Y. Application December 17, 1940,'seriai No. 370,532
1 Claim.
The present invention relates to new and useful improvements in compacts and has for its primary object to provide novel means for illuminating the interior of the compact and reecting light from the compact through a window therein to illuminate the face of a person while using the compact. h
An important object of the present invention is to provide an illuminating unit for the compact which is adapted to bel removed from the compact for replacement and servicing purposes, when desired.
A still further object is to provide a device of this character of simple and practical construction, which is neat and attractive in appearance,
' relatively inexpensive to manufacture and otherwise well adapted for the purposes for which the same is intended.
Other objects and advantages reside in the details of construction and operation as more lfully hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming part hereof, wherein like numerals refer to like parts throughout, and in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view,
Figure 2 is a vertical sectional view,
Figure 3 is a transverse sectional view through the illuminating unit, and
Figure 4 is a diagram oi the electric circuit.
Referring now to `the drawings in detail, wherein for Vthe Vpurpose of illustration I have disclosed a preferredgembodiment of the-invention, the numeral 5 designates the compact case whichis preferably in the form of a tray which is partially closed by a top section 6 to the front edge o f which is secured a lid 1 by means of a hinge 8. The under side of the lid is provided with a mirror 9.
Mounted in the tray immediately in front of the hinged edge of the lid 1 is a window I0, the plane of the window being inclined forwardly as shown to advantage in Figure 2,` and immediately beneath the window is a mirror II which is inclined in an opposite direction for reflecting the light from an electric-lamp I2 which has its base portion I3 mounted in the front wall of a transversely extending tray I4 which is positioned immediately below the top section 6, said mirror Il being inclined-at such an angle as to reflect light from said electric lamp, through' tray 5 'through an opening` I5-` formed in they side wall of the compact.` thertray- I4 havingA springclips I6 positioned thereinfor clamping a ashlight battery I1 which is connected to the lamp through the conductors I8.
The outer end wall of thev tray I4 is formed withan opening I9 in which is slidably positioned a switch push-button 20 arranged with its inner end engaging a contact 2I for moving the same into engagement with the terminal 22 of the battery, whereby to energize the lamp I2A in a manner 'well known in the art.
The window Ill is formed in-an ornamental transversely extending partition 23 mounted in the compact tray 5 which cooperates with the top 6 to provide a compartment for the removable tray III. Positioned in the compact tray 5 immediately in advance of the partition 23 is the rack 2 4 for supporting the usual cosmetics., such as the lipstick 25, mascara stick 26, and
also having Vformed therein the powder and rouge compartment 21.
From the foregoing it will beV apparent that after the lid 1 has been raised the switch 20 maybe actuated to energize the lamp I2 whereby the interior of the compact will be illuminated and the light reilected upon the face of a person through the window I0.
It is believed the details of construction, operation, and advantages of the device will be readily understood from the foregoing withoutfurther detailed explanation.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim is: l
A compact comprising a tray having a compartment adjacent one end thereof, a lid for the tray having a mirror on the' underside thereof and being hinged to the top of said compartment for opening in an upright position to expose said mirror, a window in the compartment inclining downwardly and forwardly of said mirror when the lid is swung into upright position, an illuminating device removably positioned in said compartment, said illuminating one of said end panels with the button thereof vextending through said end panel. and means for electrically connecting said battery to said bulb through said switch whereby said hub is energized by closing said switch, when the drawer is positioned in said -compartment and when the drawer is out of said compartment,
said mirror and' said'Y tray beingadapted to reflectlight'from 'said' bulb tothe face of the user.
