IMPROVEMENT IN LlFTlNG-JACKS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 188,109, dated March 6, 1877; application filed January 24, 1877.

To all whom it may concern Be itknown that I, MILTON DURNELL, of Kings Creek, in the county of Ghampaign and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in LiftingJacks; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being bad to the accompanying drawing, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

The nature of my invention consists in certain improvements upon the lifting-jack for which Letters Pa tent No. 151,365 were granted to me May 26, 1874, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.

In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, in which- Figure 1 is rear elevation, and Fig. 2 is a central vertical section.

A represents the operating-lever of my lifting-jack, at one end of which are pivoted two foot-blocks, B B, one on each side. This end of the lever A is somewhat enlarged, and has the two uprights O G pivoted to it, in the same manner as described in my former patent above referred to. In the said patent these uprights were provided with series of notches, which rendered the uprights weak and liable to break. Instead of such notches I leave the uprights entirely solid, and to their rear sides is attached a metal plate, D, which connects the two uprights firmly together. In this plate, between the uprights, is a series of holes, a a, the metal at the lower end of each hole or slot being beveled outward, as shown in the drawing. The upper ends of the uprights are, on the other side, connected by a bar, 1). Between the uprights O (l is placed a sliding bar, G, the lower end of which is beveled, and provided with a projecting iron tongue, d, firmly and permanently secured to it, and which tongue is to be inserted in either of the holes or slots a in the metal plate D.

The operation of this lifting-jack is precisely the same as that described in my former patent; but the improvements now made make the jack more strong and durable, and not liable to break or otherwise get out of order.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. The metallic plate D, provided with a series of holes, a a, in combination with the pivoted uprights O G of a lifting-jack, for the purposes herein set forth.

2. The combination of the lever A, foot- .blocks B B, uprights O 0, metal plate D, with holes a, and the sliding bar G, with. metal tongue d, all substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
