Description

M. MGOLINTOGK.
Lifting-J k No. 202,849. Patented April 23,1878.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOEL M. MCOLINTOOK, OF DEVALLS BLUFF, ARKANSAS.
IMPROVEMENT IN LlFTlNG-JACKS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 202,849, dated April 23, 1878 application filed March 6, 1878.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOEL M. MGCLINTOCK, of Devalls Blulf, in the county of Prairie and State of Arkansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lifting-Jacks; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same,
reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, and in which Figure 1 is a perspective view. Fig. 2 is a side elevation, and Fig. 3 is a vertical transverse section.
Similar letters of reference denote correspondin g parts in all the figures.
My invention has for its object the construction of a wagonjack which shall be simple, cheap, easily operated, and which may be adapted to carriages and wagons of different heights with equal facility; and it consists in the construction and arrangement of parts which I shall now proceed more fully to describe, with reference to the drawings hereto annexed, in which A A are two standards. each having a metallic bail or band, a, encircling the other, so that, while held firmly together, they may slide freely upon or against each other. The standard A has upon its front side a rack, B, the teeth of which are projecting, as shown, and are accommodated in a slot or groove, b, in standard A. To the upper end of standardA is hinged a stout metallic plate, G, which engages with the teeth of rack B, thus forming a pawl for retaining standard A at any desired elevation. The lever D is pivoted in the usual manner at the upper end of standard A.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the drawings hereto annexed, the operation of my invention will be readily understood. The standard A is first slid up, so as to suit the height of the wagon that is to be lifted, and is retained in this position by the pawl-plate U engaging with one of the teeth in rack B. The lever D is then used for lifting, in the usual manner.
My improved wagon-j ack maybe constructed at a very small cost. it is, moreover, eflicient, durable, and easily operated.
Having thus described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States The standard A, having groove b, and plate 0, hinged at the top thereof and covering the said groove, in combination with the standard A, having projecting rack B and lever l), the said standards being provided each with a metallic bail or band encircling the other, substantially as described, for the purpose herein shown and specified.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto aflixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JOEL M. MCCLINTOCK.
Witnesses:
S. J. CALVIN, FRANK GRossoN.
