Description
' J. SLONEKER Improvement in Liftingdacks.
No 131 472, Patented Sep. 17, i872.
UNITED STATES PA'IEN OFIGE.
JOHN SLONEKER, OF JEFFERSON, PENNSYLVANIA.
IMPROVEMENT lN LlF'l'lNG-JACKS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 131,472, dated September 17, 1872.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, JOHN SLONEKER, of Jefferson, in the county of Greene and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Lifting-Jacks; and I hereby declare the following to bee. full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accbmpanyin g drawing making a part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation, and Fig. 2 is a plan view, of a lifting-jack embodying my improvements.
This invention relates to certain improvements in lifting-jacks, and consists of two upright pieces, each provided with a tongue on its inner edge, the bottoms of said uprights being mortised into a base and their tops bound by a metallicgirdle whichholds them perpendicularly parallel; a center piece grooved to receive the tongues on the uprights, one of said grooves being provided with a metallic ratchet extending the full length thereof, a detent for the same being securely hinged to the top of the upright nearest the ratchet. The center piece is also provided with holes into which a pin is to be inserted. A lever, having a pin secured to it by a chain, and having its fulcrum in either of the uprights at a distance of about one-third of the length of one of the uprights from the top thereof 5 the whole being arranged in such a manner that,
- by elevating the power end of the lever and placing the pin in the hole immediately above the weight end of the lever and depressing the power end'the center piece will be forced up between the uprights, the detent will fall into its place in the ratchet, and will retain the center piece at the height to which it has been raised. a
In the drawing, A is the base. B and B are the uprights provided with the tongues c c. The upright B has the detent 11 secured to its top. The detent d is hinged so as to form a beveled joint, so that the pressure upon the detent is received upon the beveled joint and does not injure the rivet in the hinge. E is the metallic girdle which binds the two uprights and prevents them from spreading. F
of the uprights and the centerpiece.
is the center piece provided with grooves g g for the reception of the tongues c c. The groove g has the metallic ratchet it placed within it and firmly secured. The center piece is also provided with holes 12 for the reception of the pin 70, which is secured by a chain, m, to the lever L. The lever L is bifurcated at the weight end, one fork passing on each side A bolt, it, passes through the forks near the crotch,
and also through-the upright B, securing the lever to the upright. The bolt n may be withdrawn and the lever L secured to the'upright B. o is ametallic plate for protecting the lever L from the friction of the pin 70. By depressin g the weight end of the lever L and inserting the pin it in the hole c' immediately above the lever, and then depressing the power end, the center piece F will be raised, and the detent d, falling into one of the notches in the ratchet h, will hold it at the height to which it has been raised. By again depressing the weight end of the lever, withdrawing the pin it from the hole t, which it 110w occupies, and inserting it into the hole t immediately above the Weight end of the lever and depressing the power end of the same the center piece F will be raised still higher. By repeating this operation the center piece can be raised as high as the holes will permit it.
Having thus described my improvement, what I claim as new and useful, and desire to secure by Letters Patent. is-
The uprights B and B, provided with the tongues c 0, the girdle E, center piece F, provided with the grooves g g and holes 45, ratchet h hinged detent d, bifurcated lever L, pin it, and bolt n, all arranged relatively one to the other, as and for the purpose hereinbefore set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing improvement in lifting-j acks, as above described, I have hereunto set my hand this 3d day of October, 187].
JOHN SLONEKER.
