LIFTING=JACK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 393,385, dated November 27, 1888.
Application filed July 16, 1888.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM O. NEASE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Nashville, in the county of Barry and State of Michigan, have invented new and useful Improvements in LiftingJacks, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to improvements in lifting-jacks; and it consists in the construction and novel combination of parts herein-. after described, illustrated in the drawings, and pointed out in the appended claims.
Figure l of the drawings represents a perspective view of a lifting jack embodying the invention, shown lifting a log. Fig. 2 represents a central vertical section through the main frame,showing the arrangement of parts interior thereto.
Referring to the drawings by letter, A designates the main frame of the machine, composed of the similar stindards, B B, secured together at the bottom and top of the frame by the transverse blocks 1) b, respectively, to which the standards are bolted or otherwise at tached. The said standards are provided near the edges on one side with the vertical registering series of openings 0, and on the other side with the similar series of openings, 0, as shown.
0 c are metal pins, which may stand horizoutally in any two opposite openings,O or O.
D is a brace-bar, which has its upper end pivoted between the upper ends of the standards near one side, and its lower or outer end adapted to bear upon or be inserted into the ground.
E is a lever composed of a suitable handle and the fulcrum-plate F, secured, with its edges vertical,in the inner end of said handle. The said plate has in its upper edge a notch, f, and in its lower edge the similar notches, G G, at equal distances on each side of the notchf, the notch G being outward from the notch G.
H is a metal hook having the upwardlystanding point It and a bent shank, it, having a perforation near its upper end and a similar perforation adjacent to its outwardly-standing angle h as seen in Fig. 2.
I is a link with its lower end in the perforation near the end of the shank hand its upper end resting in the notch f, and iis a small hook with its shank engaged in the perforation near the angle if of the shank h.
J is a hook with its point j standing toward the hook H, andhaving the chain K secured to the end of its shank, which chain, when the machine is in operation, is engaged to the hook i.
To operate the machine, the hooks H and J are secured to opposite sides of the weight to be lifted,and the link I engaged,as,described, in the notch f and over the fulcrum-plate, which is between the standards,with a pin, 0, resting in two opposite openings, 0, and the notch G resting on said pin. The leverhandle is then depressed, raising the weight slightly, till a pin 0 can be passed into the opposite openings,0,next above the openings 0, in which the first pin is inserted, and under the outer groove, G. The first pin is then withdrawn, the lever-handle raised, and the said pin inserted in the next higher openings 0. The lever-handle is then again depressed and the operation repeated, as described, till the weight is raised sufficiently high.
Having described my invention, I claim-- The improved lifting-jack herein described and shown, comprising the parallel standards B B, connected at their upper and lower ends by the transverse blocks 1) b, respectively, and having the vertical series of transverse openings 0 0 near their opposite edges, the pins c,adapted to be inserted through the registering openings 0 O, the brace D, having its upper end pivoted between the upper ends of the standards and its lower end adapted to rest on the ground, the lever having a fulcrum-plate, F, secured in its end, the said fulcrum-plate having a notch, f, in its upper edge, and provided in its lower edge with the notches G G, adapted to engage the pins 0, the link I, having its upper end engaging the notchf, the hook H, having the upper end of its shank secured to the lower end of the link I, and having its point turned upward and outward, the hook z', secured to the shank of the hook H, the chain K,secured to said hook i, and the hook J, secured to the said chain, and having its point turned upward and inward, as specified.
