Description

(No Model.)
E.-PAUL. LIFTING DEVICE. I No. 311,030. PatentedJan. 20, 1885.
WITNESSES UNITED STATES PATENT QFEICE.
EUGENE PAUL, OF NORVVIOH, NEW YORK.
Ll FTlNG DEVICE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 311,030, dated January 20, 1885.
Application filed December 5, 1884. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EUGENE PAUL, of N orwich, in the county of Ghenango and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Lifting Device, of which the follow ing is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of my invention is to provide a newand improved lifting device which is simple in construction, strong and durable, and can be folded very compactly when not in use.
The invention consists in the combination, with legs and a center piece, of a lifting-lever held by links on the center piece and carrying a shackle, through which the toothed lifting-bar passes, the said lifting-bar also passing through a shackle 0n the top of the center piece.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure l is a side view of my improved lifting device. Fig. 2 is an enlarged sectional View of part of the same. Fig. 3 is a side view of the foot.
The two legs A are pivoted to each other at their upper ends, and between them a vertical bar or center piece, B, is pivoted, part of which projects above the pivot. Each leg is provided with a foot part, 0. By means of two links, D, the lever E is suspended at one end from the lower end of the center piece or bar B, to the end of which two plates, F, are secured, to which a shackle, G, is pivoted, formed of two links having their free ends united by a bolt. On the center piece, B, a vertical frame, H, is secured, for guiding the vertically-movable lifting-bar I, which passes through a shackle, J, pivoted on the upper end of the center piece, B, and through the shackle G, and which bar I has that edge against which the cross-pieces of the shackles rest toothed or notched. A plate, K, resting against the inner edge of the lifting-bar I, is
] held on the inner cross-bolt of the shackle G,
and preventsthe said bolt from cutting into the liftingbar. A hook, L. for supporting the weight, is pivoted or otherwise secured to the lower end of the lifting-bar I.
The operation is as follows: The free end of the lever E is pressed downward, and the shackle G, engaging with one of the teeth of the bar I, lifts the said bar. The bar I slides up through the shackle J, and during the time the shackle G is lowered to get a fresh grip on the bar I the shackle J holds the bar I and prevents it from moving downward. Then the bar I is again raised by means of the lever E, and so on.
The device can be made of wood or metal, as may be desired, and will be of great utility for raising heavy articles, especially logs, for sawing or loading them.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. In alifting device, the combination, with the pivoted legs A and the center piece, B, of the guide H, the lifting-bar I, and the lever E, for raising the lifting-bar, substantially as herein shown and described.
2. In a lifting device, the combination, with the legs A and the center piece, B, of the lifting-lever E, held by links on the center piece,
the shackle G on the end of the lever E, the shackle J on the center piece, and the liftingbar I, substantially as herein shown and described.
3. In a lifting device, the combination, with the legs A and center piece, B, of the links D, the lever E, the shackle G, the plate K on the inner bolt of the same, the toothed liftingbar I, and the shackle J on the center piece, B, substantially as herein shown and described.
EUGENE PAUL.
