UNITED STATES PATENT QFFIGE.
JOSEPH J. ADGA'IE, OF STEVENSVILLE, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN LlFTlNG-JACKS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 160.860, dated March 16, 1875 application filed February 18, 1875.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it kn wn that I, JOSEPH J. ADGATE, of Stevensville, in the county of Sullivan and State of New York, have invented certain new' and useful Improvements in Lifting-Jacks; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification.
Ihe nature of my invention consists in the construction and arrangementof a lifting-jack, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, in which Figures 1 and 2 represent perspective views of my jack.
My lifting-jack is made of two pieces, without screws, bolts, or other fastenings. A represents the foot formed at the lower end of a standard, B, of any suitable height. JThe other part of the lifting-jack is formed of a straight bar, G, with handle D and concave bearingpiece E at the upper end.
In Fig. 1 l have shown the bar 0 provided with side flanges G G, in which are a series of inclined slots, a, from the outer edge inward, and terminating in round holes b. The upper end of the standard B is formed with a cross bar, 01, as shown.
In Fig. 2 the standard B is provided with flanges G, having each an inclined slot and hole; and the bar 0 is provided with a series of pins, 01, projecting on both sides.
The lifting jack in either case works like a knee, and can be adjusted to any height desired. It is simple, cheap, and durable, and not liable to get out of order.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination of the standard 13, having base A, with the bar 0, having bearingpiece I -E and handle D, the two parts being provided with connecting devices, substantially as described, for adjusting one part up or down upon the other, substantially as herein set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 6th day of February, 1875.
JOSEPH J. ADGATE.
