The present embodiment of the invention comprises a platen formed in three alined sections A, B and C. We may assume that the section A is to be used for the tally web, the section B for the ledger sheet, and the section C for the statement, although this particular arrangement of the vwork-pieces 1s not important. l

For this reason the wheel 38 has been provided with relatively ine teeth, the teeth of the block 39 being of the same character. There being practically no lost 'y movement between .the ratchet block 39 and the ratchet wheel 38, said block is adapted to begin turning the wheel immediately upon the beginning of a forward stroke of the arm 18. Iain thereby enabled to obtain sulic'ient `rotative movement of the wheel 38 to turn theplaten-section B a full line space withoutemploying means such as is used in connection with the ratchet chine.

The combinationv of a platen comprising two alined sections, one Lof the sections having a tubular shaft and aninternal bearing member and the other section havingV a shaft which is rotatably supported in said bearingmember, and releasable means for rigidly connecting the end of the second shaft to said bearing member to locksaid sections together, said means including a screw having a stem extending through the tubular shaft, vsaid screw being adapted to engage a threaded portion of the second shaft, and a locking member within the bearing member, said stem being arranged to press said locking member against the bearing member when the screw is engaged with said threaded portion.

The combination of a platen comprising three alined sections, one of the end sections having a tubular shaft and an internal bearing member and the middle section having a shaft which is rotatably supported in said bearing member, and releasable means for rigidly connecting the end of the second shaft to said bea-ring member to lock said end section and the middle section together, said means including a screw having a stem extending through the tubular shaft, said screw being adapted to engage a threaded portion of the second shaft, and a locking member Within the bearing member, said stem having a portion arranged to press said locking member against the bearing member when the screw is engaged with said threaded portion. f
