Be it known that we, ll ilILTON C. STERN and Gnoron Jjllnrn, both citizens of the United States,.residing at Dayton, in the county of Montgomery and State of Ohio, have inve" tedcertain new and useful improvements in Handle Stops i'or Autographic Registers, of which the iollowmg is a specification, reference beinghad therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to a handle stop for autographic registers and the lil:
In autographic registers and other machines employing a manually operated feeding mechanism for paper or the like, 1t is customary to provide a stop to positively limit the feeding operation when the material has been advanced a predetermined distance. in order that the operating device, or handle, may be released for further operation'the stop is made movable so that it can be moved. into an inoperative position at the beginning of the nextoperation oi the machine. The movable stop is usually controlled by the handle which operates the feeding mechanism and it not infrequently happens that the operator will inadvertently apply pressure to the handle as it approaches the end of its operative movement so as to render the stop inoperative and to permit the handle to be carried past the prescribed limit of its movement. This is particularly liable to happen in the case of an autographic register in which webs of paper being fed from several rolls and a part of the webs are being rewoundupon other rolls, thus requiring the application of considerable power to the handle in order to operate the feeding device. l v hen the handle is carried past the prescribed limit oi its movement it is impossible to restore the iapcr thus advanced to its proper position and it is necessary to complete the rotation of the handle and feeding device to advance another length of paper, that is, another set 01'" forms, which is necessarily wasted. Further, this excessive movement of the webs of paper makes it impossible to severthe forms, which have been filled out and first advanced, at the proper point.
Que object of the present invention is to provide means for positively stopping the movement of the handle at the prescribed limit of its movement.
A further object or the invention is to provide a handle with a movable stop which will be positively moved into an operative position as the handle approaches the limit of its movement and will be released so that the stop may be retracted after the movementoi the handle has been interrupted.
A further object of the invention is to provide such a device which will be simple in its construction, positive in its operation and which can be manufactured at a relatively low cost.
Other objects of the invention will appear as the device is described in detail.

In these drawings we have illustrated one embodiment oi our invention and have shown the same as applied to an autographic register of well'known construction, but it will be understood that the in vention itself may take various forms and may be applied to autographic registersof variouslrinds or to other mechanisms in which an operating handle is employed in a like manner.
In the particular construction here shown, the autographic"register comprises a main frame or casing l in which is mounted a paper feeding device, here shown as a shaft 2, having mounted thereon pin wheels 3, one only of which isshown, which enter rows of perforations along the edges of the webs of paper for advancing the same and maintaining the superimposed webs in alinement. This feeding device isactuated by means of a gear 41- mounted on the shaft 2 and meshing with a idle gear 5 which in turn meshes with a gear 6 mounted on the inner end of a shaft 7 which is journaled in the sic e wall or" the main frame 1. Mount-- ed on the shaft, on the outer side of the wall of themain frame is a crank arm 8 by means of which the shaft 7 and gear 6 may be rotated. "1n the present construction the shaft? is journaled in an elongated bearing. 9 mounted in the wall of the main frame 1 and havingat its outer end a re cess 10 to receive the hub- 11 of the crank arm 8.
in the present machine the connections between the crank arm and the feeding device, or part to be operated, is such that the desired length of paper will'be advancedby a single complete rotation of the crank arm and a stop 12 is mounted in fixed relation to the crank arm to interrupt its movement at the end of a complete rotation. As here shown, the'stop 12 is in the form of a pin mounted in the side wall of the main frame 1 and extending across the plane in which the crank arm rotatesand s aced beyond the end of the crank arm so that the crank arm will clear the stop. It will be apparent, however, that this stop may be arranged in any suitable relation to the crank arm. Mounted on the crank arm for rotation therewith is a second stop which is movable into and out of a position to engagev the fixed stop 12 when the crank arm approaches the end of its rotation. This stop may take various forms and maybe mounted on the crank arm and operated in various ways, but in the construction here illustrated we have shown the stop as comprising atubular member, or sleeve, 13 slidably mounted upon the crank arm 8 and adapted to'be projected beyond a position to en age the fixed stop 12 when thecrank arm has completed its rotation. Preferably the 'movable stop, or sleeve, 13 is actuated by a handle by means of which the crank arm is rotated and this handle,

If desired, a spring 17 may be employed to retain the stop normally in its operative position and, as here shown, this spring is mounted in the slot 16' and confined between the inner end of that slot and the pin 15 of the handle so that it will tend to move the pin and the handle toward the outer end of the slot. The spring, however, is not essential to the operation of the present device.
To prevent the possibility of the movable stop being inadvertently retracted as the crank arm and handle approach the prescribed limit of their movement, we have provided means to act on the movable stop.

To permit of a relatively long movement of .thestop the rear end thereof is preferably cut at an inclination,
as shown in Figs. 4 and' fi', so that the upper edge thereof can move a considerable distance along the nose 19 of the cam without engaging the body of the cam. We have also shown the outer end of the sleeve, or stop, 13 cut at an inclinationso that the forward edge thereof will project beyond the upper edge. This has two advantages, first, it enables the sleeve to project a considerable distance across the fixed stop and to clear the same with a relatively short inward movement, it only being necessary to retract the sleeve far enough for the lower edge thereof to" clear the fixed stop. ther, by giving the outer end" of the sleeve an inclined shape we are enabled to cut the sleeve from standard stock'and completely shape the same by a single operation, each successive. out being made obliquely to the length of the stock and serving to simultaneously form the'rear end of one sleeve and the forward end of another sleeve. The cam may be mounted in any suitable manner but, as here shown, it is mounted about the hub 11 of the crank arm betweenthe crank arm and the end of the bearing 9 to which it may be secured by a pin 20 which holds. it against rotation with the crank arm.
It will be apparent from the foregoing description that .we have provided a handle stop which is very simple in its construction and operationand'which maybe manufactured at a very low cost and, further, that this stop is of such a character that it will be positively actuated to interrupt the movement of the handle and crank arm at the prescribed point, thus preventing the accidental movement of the handle beyond the prescribed limit of its movement.
While we have shown and described one embodiment of our invention we wish it understood that we do not desire to be limited to the details thereof as various modifications may occur to a person skilled in the art.
Having now fully described our invention what We claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. In a mechanism of the character described, a device to be rotated, a crank arm connected with said device, a stop to interrupt the movement of said crank arm, a part mounted on said crank arm for movement into and out of a position to engage said stop, a handle to move said part into a position to clear said stop, and means to positively move said part into a position to engage said stop.
2. In a mechanism of the character described, a device to be rotated, a crank arm connected with said device, a stop to interrupt the movement of said crank arm, a part mounted on said crank arm for movement into and out of a position to en age said stop, a handle to move said part. into a position to clear said stop, and a cam acting on said part to move the same into a position to engage said stop.
3. In a mechanism of the character described, a device to be rotated, a crank arm connected with said device, a stop to interrupt the movement of said crank arm, a part mounted on said crank arm for movement into and out of a position to engage said stop, a handle to move said part into a position to clear said stop, and a fixed cam acting on said part to move the same into a position to engage said stop, said cam being shaped to release said part just before it engages said stop.

In a mechanism of the character described, a device to berotated, a crank arm connected with said device, a stop to interrupt the movement of said crank arm, a part mounted on said crank arm for movement into and out of a position to engage said stop, a handle to move said part into a position to clear said stop, a fixed cam acting on said part to move the same into a position to engage said stop, said cam being shaped to release said part just before it engages said stop, and a spring acting on said part to retain it in the last named position.

In a mechanism of the character described, a device to be rotated, a crank arm connected with said device, a stop to interrupt the movement of said crank arm, a part slidably mounted on said crank arm and movable into and out of a position to engage said stop, a handle for rotating said crank arm and operatively connected with said part, and means to positively move said part into a position to engage said stop.

In a mechanism of the character described, a device to be rotated, a crank arm connected with said device, a stop to interrupt the movement of said crank arm, a part slidably mounted on said crank arm and movable into and out of a position to engage said stop, a handle for rotating said crank arm and operatively connected with said part, and a cam mounted near the axis of said crank arm and acting on said part to move the same into a position to engage said stop. In a mechanism of the character described, a device to be rotated, a crank arm connected with said device, a stop to interrupt the movement of said crank arm, a part mounted on said crank arm for radial movement into and out of a position to engage said stop, a handle to move said part into a position to pass said stop, a cam acting on said part to move the same into a position to engage said stop, and a spring acting on said part to retain the same in the last mentioned position.

In a mechanism of the character described, a device to be rotated, a crank arm connected with said device, a stop arranged beyond the path of said crank arm to interrupt the movement thereof, a part mounted on said crank arm for movement beyond the end thereof into a position to engage said stop, and an actuating device fixed with relation to said crank arm and acting on said part to move the same be yond the end of said crank arm.
10. In a mechanism of the character described, a device to be rotated, a crank arm connected. with said device, a stop arranged beyond the path of said crank arm, to'
interrupt the movement thereof, a part mounted on said crank arm for movement beyond the end thereof into a position to engage said stop, and a fixed cam acting on said part as said crank arm is rotated to move the same beyond the end of said crank arm.

In a mechanism of the character described, a device to be rotated, a crank arm connected with said device, a stop arranged beyond the path of said crank arm to interrupt the movement thereof, a part mounted prior to its on said crank arm for movement beyond the end thereof into a position to engage said stop, a fixed cam arranged to act on said part to move the same beyond the end of said crank arm and comprising a projection arranged to release said part just contact with said stop.

In a mechanism of the character described, a device to be rotated, a crank arm connected with said device, a stop to interrupt the movement of said crank arm, a sleeve slidably mounted on said crank arm and having a partadapted to be moved into and out of a position to engage said stop, a handle connected with said sleeve for actuating the same and for rotating said crank arm, and means acting on said sleeve to positively move said part into a position to engage said stop.

In a mechanism of the character described, a device to be rotated, a crank arm connected with said device, a stop to interrupt the movement of said crank arm, a sleeve slidably mounted on said crank arm and having a part adapted to be moved into and out of a position to engage saic stop, a handle connected with said sleeve for actuating the same and for rotating said crank arm, and a fixed cam mounted near the inner end of said sleeve and arranged to act on said sleeve to move the same outwardly as said crank arm rotates and to release the same just prior to the engagement of said part with said stoj 14. In a mechanism of the character described, a device to be rotated, a crank arm connected with said device, a stop tointerrupt the movement of said crank arm, a sleeve slidably mounted on said crank arm and having a part adapted to be moved into and out of a position to engage said stop, a handle connected with said sleeve for actuating the same and for rotating said crank arm, a cam mounted at the inner end of said sleeve and acting on the edge thereof topositively move the same into a position to engage said stop.

' a sleeve slidably mounted on said crank arm and having a part adapted to be moved into and outer a position to engage said stop, a handle rigidly secured to said sleeve and slidably connected with said crank arm whereby it serves both to rotate said crank arm and retract said sleeve, and a. cam acting on said sleeve to move said part into a position to engage said stop.
16. In a mechanism of the character described, a device to be rotated, a crank arm connected with said device, a stop to interrupt the movement of said crank arm, a.
sleeve slidably mounted on said crank arm and having a part adapted to be moved into and out of a position to engage said stop, a handle rigidly secured to said sleeve and slidably' connected with said crank arm whereby it serves'both to rotate said crank arm and retract said sleeve, and a cam act ing on said sleeve to move said part into a position to engage said stop, said sleeve having its inner end cut on a line oblique to its length so that its upper edge will project beyond its lower edge.

In a mechanism of the character described, a device to be rotated, a crank arm connected with said device, a stop to in terrupt the movement of said crank arm, a sleeve slidably mounted on said crank arm and having a part adapted to be moved into and out of a position to engage said stop, a handle rigidly secured to said sleeve and slidably connected with said crank arm whereby it serves both to rotate said crank arm and retract said sleeve, and a cam acting on said sleeve to move said part into a position to engage said stop, said sleeve having its ends cut obliquely to its length so that its upper edge will project beyond its lower edge at the inner end thereof and its lower edge will project beyond its upper edge at the outer end thereof.

In a mechanismof the character described, a device to be rotated, a crank arm' connected with said device and having a longitudinal slot therein, a stop extending across the plane of rotation of said crank arm beyond the path thereof, a sleeve slidably mounted on said crank arm and'adapted to be moved beyond the end thereof into a position to engage said stop, a handle having a part mounted in the side walls of said sleeve and extending through the slot in said crank arm, and a cam acting on said sleeve to positively move the end of the same beyond said crank arm.

In a mechanism of the character described, a device to be rotated, a crank arm connected with said device and having a longitudinal slot therein, a stop extending across the plane of rotation of said crank arm beyond the path thereof, a, sleeve slidably mounted on said crank arm and adapted to be moved beyond the end thereof to a position to engage said stop, a handle having a part mounted in the side walls of said sleeve andextending through the slot in said crank arm, a cam acting on said sleeve to positively move the end of the same beyond said crank arm, and a spring mounted in the slot in said crank arm and acting on said part of said handle to project said sleeve beyond the end of said crank arm.

In a mechanism of the character described, a shaft to be rotated, a bearing for said shaft having a recess-in the outer end thereof, a crank arm mounted on said shaft and having a hub mounted in a recess of said bearing, a stop to interrupt the move ment of said crank arm sleeve slidably mounted on said crank arm and movable into and out of a position to engage said stop, a cam mounted about the hub of said crank arm and rigidly secured to said bearing, said cam being arranged to movesaid sleeve into a position to cause said part to engage said stop and'to release the same just prior to such engagement.
