, This invention re'lates to new and useful improvements in cards and more' particularly to a library lcard, having an improved and adjustable as well as removable number plate thereon, the number plate bearing a stamped number thereon co-related to indicia carried on the card to which it is attached and corelated cards. Y

The primary obj ect of the invention resides in providing a card to which is applied a plate capable of adjustment to two different positions, the one for use ina stamping machine and the other to an inoperative position so as to permit the card to be filed or inserted in a pocket in the book or elsewhere.

Still another 'object of the invention resides in providing an improved clip plate to which the number plate is swivelled and having means for limiting the'movement of the number plate in the two desired positions with respect to the card. j

A still further object resides in providing an attachment for a libary card which is capable of complete application with one operation of a machine.

With these and -numerous other objects in view, our invention consists in the novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts, as will be hereinafter referred to and more particularly pointed out in the specification and claims.

Figure l is a front elevation of the library card, having our improvement incorporated thereon and showing the number plate in its extended position for introduction to a stamping machine.

In describing our invention, we shall refer to the drawing in which similar reference characters designate corresponding parts 1 designates'a card lsuch as used in public libraries, althoughthe particular invention may be readily applicable to cards of various typesfor various uses. The particular card i ing capable of adjustment to two different positions. The card 1 isprovided adjacent one upper corner with a pair of spaced-apart lslots 2 into which are inserted and clinched the tongues `or anges 8 of a'clip plateI 4. These flanges are formed integral with the side edges of the plate 4 and are insertable through the slots 2 of the card and bent 'back upon themselves to secure the plate Atothe card through the medium of a machine for this specific purpose. j

The plate 4 is preferably rectangular in design and has swivelled centrally thereof as sh'own at 5,.a small elongated number plate 6. The connectionv between the plat-e 6 and the plate 4 occurs intermediate the side edges 0f the plate 6 adjacent one end thereof and the corners of said plate 6 are rounded. For convenience, we have designated one rounded corner adjacent the swivel 5 by the numeral 7 and the other corner is designated by the numeral 8. The clip plate 4 has a vstud 9 struck up therefrom adjacent one lower Acorner so that upon the movement ofthe-plate 6 in one direction, the rounded corner 7 will strike thestud and limit the movement of said plate 6 with respect to the plate 4, and upon movement of the plate in the opposite direction, the corner 8V will contact with thestud 9 to limit the movement of the rplate 6 in this direction; f

The plate 6 has impressed therein a number corresponding to the number on thelcard l'. When it is desired to remove a book from the library, the owner of the card presents the 'same to the clerk and by moving the plate 6 upwardly, the number thereon willfbe projected beyond the edge of the card so that the lthroughout the several vi'ews'and in which y `number appearing on the card, the plate bef plate 6 may be inserted in the proper machine for printing the number on another card. The stud 9 will obviously limit the swinging movement ofthe plate 6to an upright or vertical position with respect to the card. When the plate is removed from the machine, it may be thrustvdoWnWardly and the stud 9 will limit the movement of the plate 6 so that the same Will be inV a substantially horizontal position. In this 'horizontal position,r theV side edge of the plate 6i is substantially fiush with the upper edge of the card l so that the plate will not interfere with the placing of an article-of manufacture comprising a spethe card in an envelop or pocket or other place provided for the same. The clip plate and the number plate are constructed of very thin metal and constitute a very thin projec- `tion on the upper end of the card, and Will not obstruct the ready insertion or introduction of the card into a pocket or envelop. lThe plates are so formed Yand constructed that with one operation of a specific machine, the plates 4 and 6 may be swivelled together and simultaneously clipped 4to a card.V

As considerable difiiculty has been encountered in the use of various devices for Y llibrary cards heretofore, it Willbeseen that the present device Will produce an exceptionally efficient means for accomplishing the desired results. It'Will further be seen that the device is extremely simple and durable in construction and capable of manufacture'and application to use under the most economical conditions. v

While We have particularly described the elements best adapted to perform the .functions set forth, it is obvious that various changes in form, proportion and in the minor details of construction may be resorted to Without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the principles of the invention.

Having thus described our invention, what We claim is:
