This invention relates to dampening means for ironing presses and more particularly to a dampening attachment for use with ironing press-es including a spring operated roll hav ing a sheet of dampening material thereon adapted to be unwound from the roll and projected on top of the stationary buck of the ironing press.
The object of the invention is to provide a simple and inexpensive attachment for ironing presses adapted to be used in the dampening of articles upon the stationary buck of a press.
Other objects and advantages of the inven tion will more fully appear from the following detailed description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings which illustrate a single embodiment thereof and in which;
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a press showing the novel dampening attachment in section. applied thereto;
Figure 2 is a plan View of the press and the attachment connected thereto Figure 3 is a transverse sectional view drawn to an enlarged scale of the dampening attachment.
On the drawings:
The reference character 10 designates generally an ironing press of conventional con struction including a stationary ironing buck 11 supported upon a base 12 and a movable ironing head 13 cooper-able with the station ary buck and pivotally supported by the base 12. I
The stationary buck 11 has the usual padding 14 disposed thereon on which an article to be ironed is adapted to be placed.
Suitably attached tothe base 12 is a lateral extension 15 on which iscarried the novel dampening attachment designated by the reference character 16. This attachment 16 is supported upon the extension 15 by means of a pair of spaced vertical plates 1717. The attachment comprises a container 18 adapted to hold a body of fluid preferably water 19 and to which are connected inlet and outlet pipes 20 and 21. The inlet'pipe 20 has connected to it a valve 22 for'controlling the flow of fluid or water through this pipe into the container 18. Thehoiiiemaifi g-be 5 the inlet pipe'2O is disposedin theupper part p "of the container 18 and directly'over'a roller 23' which is'o'f" the shadefroller type and is suitably supported at its [ends in brackets 24 and 25 secured to thesidesof the c ontainer 18f" The roller 23 and the'brackets and 25 are illustrated as being of the same! construction as the roller and brackets used in .window shades. Also the roller "23 ha's'dispo sed inside of it the usual shade roller spring 26 adapted to automatically wind up a sheet 27 attached at one end to the roller 23. The free end of the sheet as shown in Figure 2 has secured to it a ring or head 28 by means which the shade may be manually unwound from the roll 23 to project the sheet across the article on the ironing buck 11 when the head 13 is in its elevated or opened position.
The'pipe 20 shown in Figure 1 has its underside provided with a plurality of per forations 29 through which water is adapted to pass directly on to the top of the'sheet 27 as it is unwound from the roll 23. The vertical leg of the outlet pipe 21 extends up to the roll 23 as shown in Figure 1 and is adapted to carry away the excess fluid discharged in to the container 18. This vertical leg of the pipe 21, as best shown in Figure 3,
is preferably disposed in th middle of the so container 18. Also, it will be noted that the container 18 is provided with a removable top or cover 30 for permitting of access to the roll and sheet thereon.
The sheet 27 may be made of any suitable moisture absorbing material such, for eX- ample, as cloth or the like, and is adapted to be projectedbetween the ironing members for the purpose of moistening the article to be ironed. Also, this sheet 27 may be left be- 0 tween the ironing members on top of the article during the ironing operation if it is so desired, or, on the other hand, it may be moved quickly across the article to moisten the article to a slight degree and then the operator may, by exerting a slight pull on] the ring 28, cause the sheet to be wound up on the spring roller 23 in the, same way that a window shade is wound up on its roller.
It is desired tobeunderstood that although there is illustrated and described in detail J the preferred embodiment of the invention, the invention is not to be thus limited but only insofar as defined by the scope and spirit 5 of the appended claim.
7 What is claimed is:
-The combination with an ironing buck, of a dampening attachment therefor comprising a trough supported at one end of the buck, 10 a spring roller mounted within said trough with its axis at right angles to the longitudinal axis of the buck, a sheet of absorbent material wound on said roller to be unrolled therefrom and extended across the top of the buck longitudinally thereof, a spray pipe within the trough for moistening the sheet as it is withdrawn from the roller, and a drain pipe for said trough for maintaining a constant level of water therein.
29 In testimony whereof, I have hereunto subscribed my name at Chicago, Cook county,
Illinois, this 13 day of December, 1929.
