Description

P 6, 1932- K. G. MELDAHL 'STEAMSHIP WITH THE MAIN BOILER MOUNTED 0N1A DECK OR PLATFORM AT SOME HEIGHT ABOVE THE BOTTOM OF THE SHIP OR THE TANK TOP Filed Oct. 16, 1931' Patented Sept. 6, 1932 UNITED STATES KNUD GEORG MELDAHIJ, OF FREDRIKSSTAD, NORWAY STEAMSHIP WITH THE MAIN BOILER MOUNTED ON A DECK OR PLATFORM AT SOME HEIGHT ABOVE THE BOTTOM OF THE SHIP OR THE TANK TOP Application filed October 16, 1931, Serial No.
In steamships in which the main boilers are mounted on a deck or platform at some height above the bottom of the ship so that a free space is obtained below the boiler room, it is as a rule advantageous to use this room for bunkers, auxiliary machinery or the like, since, if the room is used as a cargo hold, it is often diflicult to arrange the cargo hatch as near to the end bulkhead of the room as desirable. 7
Where the said space is used as a coal bunker, the boilers will hinder the location of the bunker hatches or trunks at convenient points for filling of the bunker. According to the present invention this difiiculty is avoided by carrying one or more bunker trunks down between the boilers, the latter being for this purpose located at a somewhat greater distance apart than usual, the com- 2 mon flue or uptake for the boilers being made correspondingly longer. It is thus possible to arrange the trunks at the most suitable place in the middle of the bunker so that little or no trimming of the coal is necessary in order to completely fill the bunker.
The trunk further may be provided with a varying cross section at different points in its length in order to facilitate filling and a further reduction of the trimming. For instance, the trunk may be widened below the center line of the boiler.
The drawing illustrates an embodiment of the invention, Fig. 1 is a longitudinal section through the engine room and boiler room of the ship, and Fig. 2 shows the arrangement in a horizontal section on the level of the boiler room. a
Part 1 is the engine room, 2 the boiler room and 3 the bunker below the same. As will be seen, the boilers 4, 5 are placed at some distance one from the other, with an extended uptake 6, and the filling trunk 7 is carried down between the boilers centrally to the bunker.
Having now particularly described and ascertained the nature vof my said invention and in what manner the same is to be performed, I declare that what I claim is:
1. In a steamship, the combination with a 5 plurality of main boilers mounted on a deck 569,328, and in Norway September 2, 1931.
or platform at some height above the bottom of the ship, said boilersbeing arranged in spaced relation of a bunker below the boilers, and at least one filling trunk for the bunker carried down between the boilers.
2. An arrangement as claimed in claim 1, characterized in that the cross-section of the trunk increases below the center line of the signature.
KNUD GEORG MELDAHL.
