Description

A. HOLMES Sept. 6, 1932.
CONTAINER Filed Sept. 11, 1950 FIG. 1.
. FIG. 2.
INVENTQR. Anna H Elma 5 ATTORNEYS.
Patented Sept. 6, 1932 PATENT OFFICE.
ANNA HOLMES, OF DALLAS, TEXAS CONTAINER Application filed September 11, 1930. Serial No. 481,307.
This invention relates to improvements in receptacles or containers having means for efiiciently leveling material in a spoon or otherl instrument during withdrawal of the Same after receiving material from within thecontainer.
A further object of this invention is the provision of an improved spoon leveling device of a relatively simple nature which may be efiiciently formed or placed within the upper portion of a container in a position which will not interfere with the ingress or egress of materials, and which will not interfere in any way with ordinary closing or opening of the can, yet which may be uti ized when desired for leveling of the contents of a spoon or the like as it is withdrawn from the receptacle or container;
Afurther object of this invention is the provision of a device to facilitate the leveling of a teaspoonful or tablespoonful of material as it is withdrawn from .a container, which cooperates in a relatively simple and eflicient reinforcing and bracing relation with the container.
Other objects and advantages of this invention will be apparent dur ng the, course of the following detailed description.
In the accompanying drawing, forming a part of this Specification, and wherein similar reference characters designate corresponding parts throughout the several views.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the improved container, showing the closure lifted device in position. v
Figure 2 is a plan view ofthe open end of the container, showing the spoon leveling device in position.
Figure 3 is a fragmentary sectional view.
showing the manner in which material in a spoon may be leveled as the spoonful of material is withdrawn from the container.
F i re 4 is an enlarged fragmentary sec- 4 tiona view taken transverselythrough the levelingblade.
Inthe drawing, wherein for the purpose of illustration is shown onlya preferred embodiment of the invention, the letter A'may generally designate the container, which in-- cludes a body portion B having the leveling device C operatively placed therein in a manner which will not interfere with the cilia cient removal and placementof a closure D; the leveling device C being provided for the purpose of leveling ofl the material within a spoon or otherinstrument E as the latter is withdrawn after receiving materials from the container. v
The body B preferably comprises a cylino0 drical wall portion 11, of tin or other material, afiixed in usual manner, having a bottom wall 12 crimped or secured thereto in any approved relationship. The upper end of the body B is open to the compar't- 66 ment13 therein. Spaced below the top edge 14 of the body wall 11-is an annular bead or crimp 15, extending inwardly, which rein- -forces the container at the 'top.
The closure D is of inverted cup-shaped I7 type, including a topwall 17 having a de-- pending annular skirt 16 which is adapted to frictionally receive the upper portion of the body wall 11 of the container A. This *skirt 16 is provided with inwardly extend-f ing annular crimp or head 18 against which the top edge 14 of the body wall 11 abuts to limit the downwardposition of'the closure D upon the can body B. This crimp also reinforces the closure.
The improved leveling device C is referably constructed of a band of metal 0 relatively thin gauge material which is longi- "tudinally doubled. between the opposite 35 from the body, with the material leveling which is convex, and in fact is the leveling longitudinal edges thereof, at an edge 20,
edge. The overlapping doubled portions- 21 and 22 are of unequal widths, that is, the portion 21 is wider than the portion 22, as
shown in the drawing. The ends of the 9" leveling device C are transversely bent or turned at 30' with respect to the straight line Y of the body rtion of the leveling device C, and are slightly arcuat'ed and secured as by solderingor riveting or many a proved manner tothe inner periphery of t e body wall 11 at the open top portion ofthe container body B, as shown in the drawing. The height or overall width of the leveling device C is equivalent to the straight line 1 dimension between the top edge 14 of the B over which the closureD fits.
form of invention herein shown and de- The container body B may be impressed with suitable indicia 4:0 designating the lo cation from which the lid D is intended to be placed upon the container body B, so as to prevent distortion of the container body at the closure receiving'neck thereof, for obvious reasons.
at the top of the container, a leveling blade of band-like material longitudinally doubled upon itself and secured at its ends to the inner walls of the container in the open top thereof, so that the top edge of the blade lies flush with the top edge of the container, the downwardly facing edge of the blade being the edge at which the blade is doubled upon itself and being convex to provide a scraping edge.
ANNA HOLMES.
It is to be particularly noted that the leveling device C is relatively thin and will not prove to be an obstruction for either the ingress or egress of the total contents of the container A at any time. The levelingdevice does not interfere with the sanitary condition of the container. Furthermore, the
leveling device is of sufiicient height thatthe contents of the spoon or instrument'E may be efl iciently leveled without liability I of overspilling of-the contents of the spoon back onto the spoon during a leveling operation, as would occur with the use of round or relatively narrow sections of material.
Various changes in the size, shape, and arrangement of parts may be made to the scribed, without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the claims.
I claim:
1. In a device of the class described the combination of a container having a detachable closure therefor, said closure including a flange adapted to telescope upon the exterior of the container, and a diametrically fixedly secured at its ends within the open end of the container, the container externally thereof having indicia designating an end of the member pertinent to the location at which the cover should be started when placing upon the container.
2. A container having a compartment open I at the top of the container, and a leveling blade of band-like material longitudinally doubled upon itself and secured at its ends I to the'inner walls of the container in the open top thereof.
3. A container having a compartment open at the top of the container, a leveling blade ofband-like material longitudinally doubled upon itself and secured at its ends to the in;
' ner walls of the container in the open top thereof, so that the top edge of the blade lies 5 flush with the top edge of the container.
, 4. A container having a compartment open disposed leveling and reinforcing member
