Description
P. M. MEDA RT. GYMNASTI-C APPARATUS. No.187.477, Patent edFeb. 20,1877.
U ITE STATES PATENT OFFICE.
IMPROVEMENT IN GYMNASTIC APPARATUS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 187,477, dated February 20, 1877; application filed June 21, 1876.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, PHILIP MEDART and FREDRIOK 'MEDART, of St. Louis, in the county of St. Louis and State of Missouri,
' have invented a cer ain Improved Convertible Parallel and Horizontal Bars, of which the following is aspecification This invention relates to an exercising or gymnastic apparatus, which may be converted into a horizontal bar or parallel bars; and consists in forming the supporting-base of cast metal, having projecting sockets for the reception of the vertical corner posts or supports ot the apparatus. On top of said supports are arranged the parallel bars, which have lug-brackets, by which they are secured to the top of said supports. When the apparatus is to be used as a horizontal bar, said parallel bars are removed, and a cross-brace at each end substituted therefor, to receive and brace the vertical. standards, to which the horizontal bar is secured adjustably. Said standards or posts rest in central recesses in the supporting-base.
In the drawings, Figure l is a perspective view of the apparatus arranged as parallel bars. Fig. 2 is a similar view, showing it arranged as a horizontal bar. Fig. 3 is an under perspective view of the lug-bracket.
A A are the cast-metal bases or supports, connected together by longitudinal braces B, and provided with vertical sockets a, for the reception of the corner-posts U. D are the parallel bars, having a plate, 0, with a projecting eye, a", which passes through a slot in thelug-bracket E, secured on top of the cornerposts 0, and by which the bars D are secured to the posts 0 by passing a pin or key through the eye 6.
E is the horizontal bar, having cast collar f, with side lugs or plates f, which embrace the vertical posts or standards G, and secured adjustably thereto by pins 9 passing through said lugs, and one of a series of holes, g, in the post or standard G. The foot of said postG rests in a socket or recess, a, in the base A.
H is a cross piece or brace for secured on top of the supports 0 by lugbrackets E (2, similar to those on the parallel bars D, and said cross-piece is provided with a slot, h, for the reception of the post or stand ard G, which may be secured therein by pin h.
We claim as our invention 1. In a gymnastic apparatus, the cornerthe post G,
posts 0, bars D, brace H, posts G, and bar F, I
all constructed and arrangedto form either a horizontal or parallel bars, as specified.
2. In a gymnastic apparatus, substantially as described, the cast-metal bases A, having sockets a, for the reception of the corner-posts O, as specified.
PHILIP MEDART. FREDRIGK MEDART. Witnesses:
