IMPROVEMENT IN CHAIRS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 166,555, dated August 10, 1875 application filed April 10, 1875.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY REUPKE, of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in the Manufacture of Chairs, of which the following is a specification:
The present invention relates to new and useful improvements in chairs, whereby they are made more durable and useful than they have hitherto been; and it consists in the manner of confining the back to the seat and to the rear legs, and in the general construction of the chair, whereby it may be taken to pieces for storage or transportation, as hereinafter more fully described.
In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 is a vertical section of Fig. 2, taken on the line a: m. Fig. 2 is a vertical section of Fig. 1, taken on the line y 3 Fig. 3 is a top view of one of the seat-rails detached. Fig. 4 is a front view of one of the legs, showing slot to receive the seat-rail.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
A is the back; B, the seat. Grepresents the rail of the seat. D are the uprights of the chair back. The seat-rails G pass through these uprights D by a tenon, E, and are fastened therein by keys F. The lower ends of these uprights are toed into the rear legs Gr, as seen at H, thus bracing the back securely. I are the front legs. J are stretchers, the
ends of which pass through the legs (front and rear) by means of tenons, and are secured by keys K. These two stretchers are connected together bya center bar, m, the tenons of which pass through the stretchers, and
piece S is let into slots in the upper ends of the side-piecesD, and is fastened by screws, while tenons on the cross-bar R pass through the side-pieces D, and are secured by keys T.
It will be seen that this chair may be taken to pieces by remox'ing the keys and screws, so that it may be packed in a small space for storage or transportation.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patentl. The chair-back uprights D D, having toe H resting in notch of legs G, and a mortise through which the seat-rails G are passed, and secured by keys, all substantially as and for the purpose described.
2. The connected chair-stretchers J J, passing through front and rear legs of chair, and secured by keys, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
3. The seat-rails 0, having gains N, combined with front and rear legs, slotted, as and HENRY REUPKE. Witnesses:
WTLLIAM WATT, LoUIs TRooME.
