FOLDABLE PAPER Box Filed April 5, 1951 2 Sheets-Sheet 2 1 Patented Aug. 16, 1932 ranges PATENT. OFFIC WILLIAM RrKR-EBS, F BALTEEOBE, MARYLAND I'OLDABLE Application filed April 8,
This invention relates to folding boxes and haaspecial reference to a folding paper box. One important object of the invention is to provide an improved single piece blank from which a complete box and cover can be folded. A second important object of the invention is to provide an improved box folded from such a blank, the blank being so arranged as to permit a portion of the blank to be folded in one position as a cover and in a second posi tion as a display flap.
With the above and other objects in view as will be hereinafter apparent, the invention consists in general of certain novel details of construction and combinations of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and specifically claimed.
In the accompanying drawings like characters of reference indicate like parts in the several views, and:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the box open and ready for closin a Figure 2 is a view in re uced scale of the blank from which the box-is folded.
Figure 3 is a vertical section throughthe closed box from front to rear. a
Figure 4c is a perspective view of the box arranged in display position. 1
Figure 5 is a rear view of the box arranged as in Figure 4..
Figure 6 is a lon itudinal vertical section through the closed ox looking towards the front.
In forming this box a suitable sheet of pa r like material such as mill board, straw board or the like is cut and scored produce a. blank having a rectangular bottom portion 10. At each end of this bottom is s rectum gular end. flap l1 defined from the hotly 10 by a crease or score line 12. These flap e):- tend the full width of the bottom 10. Sin larly a front flap 13 and rear flap M are defined from the bottom 10 by the fold lines 15. see flaps 13 and 14: extend the full length 1 rnr'nn BOX 1931. Serial no. 527,469.
bottom and the flaps 11, 13, and 14 are all of the same width. In the corners between the end flaps -11 and front flap 13 are square corner flaps 16 defined from the fia s 11 and 13 by scored fold lines 17 and each aving a diagonal fold line 18 scored therein. Tabs 19 of the same longitudinal dimensions as the flaps to which they are attached extend from the free edges of the flaps 11 and 13 and are defined therefrom by scored-fold lines 20. A 3
The box is formed by folding the front and end flaps vertically upwards with respect to F the bottom 10, the corner flaps 16 being doubled on the fold lines 18 to permit this. The rear iiaps 28 then are folded toward each other and interlocked. The tabs 19 are fold- I ed inwardly. Finally the back flap 1 is folded vertically upward, the cover folded forward and the front cover flap bent down and inserted in the box.
Should it be desired to use the box cover as a display device the auxiliary rear flaps are disconnected and brought together behind the main rear flap 14 and the cover doubled on its central fold lines to cause the tab 25 to project upwardly, the :tront cover so flap being brought into position against the front face of the main rear flap l4.
lhere has thus been provided a simple and efficient device of the kind described and for the purpose specified.
It is obvious that minor changes may be made in the form and construction of the invention without departing from the material spirit thereof. It is not, therefore, desired to confine the invention to the exact form herein shown and described, but it is desired to include all such as properly come within the scope claimed.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new, is:
1. A blank for folding boxes consisting of a single sheet of material cut and scored to rovide a rectangular bottom portion, end,
ront and main rear flaps extending from the respective edges of the bottom and defined therefrom by fold lines, square corner portions in the corners between the end and front flaps and defined therefrom by fold lines, tabs on the free edges of the front and end flaps, a cover portion extending from the free edge of the rear flap and defined therefrom by a fold line and having a front cover flap extending from the free edge of the cover and defined therefrom by a fold line, said cover being divided into forward and rear portions by fold lines extending in- .wardly from the end edges of the cover and having their inner ends connected by a semicircular slit, and auxiliary rear flaps extending from the rear edges of the end flaps and defined therefrom by fold lines, said auxiliary end flaps being separated from the main end flap an icover by slits and having coopgrating locking slits adjacent their rear en s.
2. A box formed from a blank consisting of a single sheet of material cut and scored to provide a rectangular bottom portion, end, front and main rear flaps extending from the respective edges of the bottom and defined therefrom by fold lines, square corner portions in the corners between the end andfront flaps an defined therefrom by fold lines, tabs on t e free edges of the front and end flaps, a cover portion extending from the free edge of the main rear flap and defined therefrom by a fold line and having a front cover flap extending from the free edge of :he cover and defined therefrom by a fold line, said cover being divided into forward 7 and rear portions by fold lines extending inwardly from the end edges of the cover and having their inner ends connected by a semicircul or slit, and auxiliary rear flaps extendin from the rear edges of the end flaps and de ned therefrom by fold lines, said auxiliary end flaps being separated from the main end fiapsand cover by slits and having cooperating locking. slits adjacent their rear ends, the front, main rear and end flaps be-
