It is common practice to divide up the cards into zones involving sometimes six 'c'olumns for each zone, and it is common'practice also to allot zones for credit and debit accounts entered on the card bythe per'forating, machine. 7 F
If the card is of an account in which the credit means an addition in. the tabulator, then the zone in which the debit entries are made means that the tabulator has got to subtract. p
Tabulating machines employ adding mechanism incorporating what isknown asend to end transfer which .permits'the.subtrac used in the perforating machine, that is to say, cards which have an equal margin and iniwhich the lines numbered 0 to 9 are equally spaced from theedge.
Bythe use of such cards .it is possible to eliminate the act of the operator of inverting thecards, thereby eliminating the chances of human error in this operation.
According to the. present, invention apparatus for producing record cards or the like for use in operating statistical machines com prises means for simultaneously making on a cardy'direct and complementary records of an amount, said means also permitting a direct-recordonly of the amount to be made.

By the present invention a perforating machine isoperable to directly make the records necessary to cause a subtraction to be effected-in the adding mechanism of a tabulator without any special manipulation of the cards. Moreover, the fact that the cards can be used the right side up when a subtraction is being made in the tabulator permits the use of other perforations in the card for special-operations in the tabulator, which ofcourse, cannot be employed when the card. isreversed unless such reversed card was perforated suitably so as to-cause the, simultaneous operation inthe tabulator, a practice not employed because of the relativeirregnlariies of the perforationsso formed due to the fact that in the inverted-positionopposite edges of the card would be used for registering purposes; 7

In a punch perforating machine for making records on statistical record cards or strips the combination with the normal punching mechanism, of complementary punching mechanism, means for operatively connecting both of said mechanisms at a preetermined zone on a card or strip, means disconnecting the said mechanisms at other zones on the said card or strip, and means for disabling the said first-means at will.

In a punch perforating machine the combination of a carriage, a set of normal setting plungers carried by the carriage, a set of complementary setting plungers, a plurality of U-shaped connecting members, an arm on each connecting member connected to a normalplungen'a secondv arm on each connecting member, a pin carried on said'second'arm andadapted toride in a slot formed in a complementary plunger, a' transverse projection in said slot past which the pin can a normally slide without movingthe complementary plunger, and means for displacing the complementary plunger until the project-V tion is in therpath of the pin whereby movement of the connecting member is then transmitted to the complementary plunger.
