The said keys are ten in number, there being one for each of the ten digits or figures. The rear end of each lever, except the one for 9 is provided with a vertical extension or hammer 12, above which the movable carriage 13 operates. Said carriage is supported on rails 14 by means of anti-friction rollers 15. Said rails extend transversely and the carriage travels thereon in its movement from order to order when the number keys are operated' The carriage is provided with projections 16 extending into channels or grooves in therails 14 and serving as retainers to prevent removal of the carriage from the rails.
As usual, the carriage includes a series of.
rows of pins 17 Said pins are actuated downwardly by springs 18, Fig. 10, but may be moved vertically to registering position by operation of the number-keys, the extensions or hammers 12 engaging the lower ends of the pins when the said keys are operated, thereby moving the pins to registering position. Sliding latch plates 19 are arranged in proper relation with the rows of pins, whereby when any pin is raised it will be supported in its raised position until another pin in the same row isoperated, whereupon the latch plate will be moved to release the first pin and to engage with and support the second pin. In the upper portion of the carriage the upper ends of the pins extend into grooves or channels 20 within which the heels 21 of the racks 22 travel whenoperated to record numbers set up in the carriage. The racks 22 in the present instance, just as in the Hopkins patent referred to, swing from the shaft 23 and are cooperatively related to type carriers 24 swinging from the same shaft and adding mechanism B. to registeror add therein the numbers contained in the carriage when the racks are operated. The
mechanism for effecting intermittent connection of the adding mechanism with the racks is too well known at the present time ated in the other direction causing the adding mechanism to operate to add numbers in the'usual and well known way. As in said patent the carriage in the present instance is controlled by an escapement device which may be of any preferred type operable by the keys. In the present instance an escapement bar 25 rests upon the key levers 11 and isprovided with a pawl 26 arranged to escape upon a segment 27 attached to the vertical shaft 28. Said shaft 28 has an arm 29 secured at. its upper end and connected with the carriage bya pivoted link 30 whereby rotation of the shaft in either direction will cause corresponding movement of the carriage. From the foregoing it will be seen tha operation of the key levers 11 will result in operation of the escapement permitting the spring 32 to move the carriage step by step across the machine to proper position with respect to the-racks 21 and the type carriers 2 4. The operation of the key levers also results in "setting the pins 17 to representthe number struck on the keys except as to the 9 key which, as previously stated, is without any pin-setting device.
The lever for the 9 key is provided with a standard 33, at theupper end of which a lever 34 is pivoted, said lever having one arm extending vertically and another arm extending under the adjacent rail 14. A spring 35 holds said lever in its idle position as shown in Fig. 4. Operation of the 9 key will cause the horizontal arm of the lever 34 to engage the under side of the adjacent rail 14 and Will cause the vertical arm of said lever to engage the front end of one of the plates 19 effectively to move said plate rearwardly and release any pin that may have been previously set in operative position. There is no pin 17 for the 9 key, the plate 36 being secured to the front side of the carriage in front of all of the rows of pins, said plate acting as an abutment for the heels 21v in operation of the racks and recording devices for adding and recordingx9s. The plates 19 move successively past the lever 34 in the same way that the pins 17 move successively over the key hammers 12. After each number is added or recorded the carriage is returned to its position as shown in Fig. 6,

When the carriage moves leftwardly on operation of the number keys, the pins 48 are carried successively over one end of the lever 46 as may be seen by reference to Fig. 9. Also the leftward movement of the carriage causes the lever 40 to be placed in operative relationwith respectto the lever 46. Therefore, after any number whatever has been set within the carriage, the tabulating key may be operated effectively to cause the lever 46 to move one of the pins 48 to elevated position as shown in Fig. 11. The pin so moved in any case will be rearwardly from that row of pins 17 in which, or in advance of whichby operation of the 9 key, the last digit struck on the keys was registered. Operation of the recording mechanism will then cause the carriage to be returned to idle position as iswell understood, but the pins 17 which had been set to register the number and the pin 48 which had been elevated will all be retained in their As previously stated, the carriage may now be caused to move to operative position with respect to the racks 22 and their associated type carriers 24 by operation of the tabulating key which releases the escapement .and permits such movement. It is necessary, however, that some device be provided to stop the carriage at the proper position and to prevent it from being moved beyond the desired location. Iwill now describe-this'stopping device.
The shaft 41 has an arm 54 loosely mounted thereon and extending through a notch in a stationary plate'55 to which said arm 54 is connected'by a supporting spring 56 preventing said arm from dropping but permitting actuation thereof when desired. Theplate 55'prevents lateral movement of the arm 54 when the shaft 41 is moved by its spring'43 or by operation of the pin carriage. The sleeve to which the arm 54 is attached has a pin 57 extending laterally in front of a pin 58 rigid with the shaft 41 whereby rotation of the shaft by operation of the tabulating key will cause the arm 54 to swing downwardly into position tobe engaged bythe tabulating stop pin 48 which had previously been raised. Thus the'carriage will be stopped in position to present the previously registered number in proper relation .to the racks and their type-carriers so that said number may be repeated as often as desired without operation of the number keys. Release of the tabulating key at this time will permit the escapement pawl 26 to engage with the segment 27 and there'- by'hold the carriage from further movement.

At any position of the carriage after any digit key has been struck, the tabulating key may be operated effectively to position the desired tabulating stop pin, provided the same has not been positioned at some other time, and to permit any other tabulating stop pin to be returned to idle position.
A tabulating mechanism of this'cha'racter in connection with these machines is especially valuable wherever multiplying or repeating :of numbers is required. By this mechanism any number registered in the carriage may be added or recorded as often as desired, and after the carriage has been returned to idle position and the adding mechanism cleared, the machinemay be put into immediate operation for repeating the same number further without the necessity of again setting said number in the carriage, and the manipulation of a single key is all that is required to cause the carriage to move to the required position irrespective of the number of digits inthe number to be added or recorded.
