Description

July 26, 1932. L OWENS 1,869,075
BLADE HOLDER Filed March 1, 1932 INVENTOR BY awymmt ATTO R N EY Patented 26, 1932 PATENT OFFICE LEE '1. OWENS, OF TACOMA, WASHINGTON BLADE HOLDER Application filed March 1,
This invention relates to scrapers especially adapted for removing foreign matter from surfaces, such as paint from glass, window panes, and other surfaces, and has for the primary object, the provision of a holder so 1 construction, combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
For a complete understanding of m 1nvention, reference is to be had to the fo low-- M ing description and accompanymg drawing,
in which Figure 1 is a plan view illustrating a scraper constructed in accordance with my invention. Figure 2 is a sectional view taken on the line 2--2 of Figure 1.
Fi re 3 is a plan view illustrating the blade adjusted into a position for protecting the cutting edge thereof.
Figure 4 is a plan view illustratm the opte side of the holder from that s own in V igures 1 and 3 and with the blade in a fully extended tion so that the blade may be removed cm the holder.
Figure 5 is a transverse sectional view takenontheline5-5ofFi rel.
Figure 6 is a perspective view illustrating means for adjusting the position of the blade.
Referrin in detail to the drawing, the numeral 1 in cates a holder including .a handle 2 and a head 3 formed of inte a1 construction and preferably stamped cm a sin le piece of'material. The handle 2 adjacent its side edges is rounded or curved to form flanges 4 providing a construction which will permit a person to grip the handle without the edges thereof biting into the persons hand. The handle 2 is provided with an elongated slot 5 to slidably receive a fastener 6 in the form of a bolt having a removable 1932. Serial 170. 598,121.
nut. A blade retaining plate 7 is slidably mounted on the head 3 and is provided with an extension 8 overlying the slot 5 and pro vided with an aperture to receive the fastener 6. The plate 7 is provided with lugs 9 slidably received in grooves 10 formed in the head 3. The grooves 10 0 en outwardly through the forward edge 0 the head 3 to permit the lugs 9 to move entirely out of said grooves so that a convenient type of razor blade 11 may be positioned on the plate 7 with the lugs extending through the blade so that when said lugs are moved into the grooves, the blade will be clamped between the head 3 and the plate 7. Guide flanges 12 are formed in the side edges of the head 3 and slidably receive the side edges of the plate 7 to prevent lateral shifting of the plate 7 relative to the head 3.
The head 3 adjacent the handle 2 is provided with a slot 13 having lateral branches 14 and 15. A flexible metallic strip 16 rests upon the extension 8 of the plate 7 and is provided with an opening ad acent one end to receive the fastener 6. A flange 17 is formed on the free end of the strip 16 and extends through a slot 18 of the plate 7 to enter any one of the branch slots 14 or of the head 3 and has formed thereon a finger piece 19 which extends through the slot 13 of the head 3, providing means whereby a person may readily flex the strip 16 to disengage the flange 17 from either of the branches 14 or 15 for the purpose of adjusting the blade 11 relative to the head 3. When the flange 17 is positioned within the branch 14 of the slot 13, the cuttin edge of the blade is arranged inwardly o the edge of the head 3 so as to protect the cutting edge and prevent the latter from injuring or cutting a rson while handling the device. When it is desired to use the device as a scraper, the fin er piece 19 is pressed flexing the strip 16 an moving said strip 16 endwise until the flange 1 aligns with the branch slot 15 whence the pressure is relieved on the finger 19 allowing the flange 17 to enter the branch 15 positioning the cutting edge of the blade a desired distance beyond the edge of the head 5 so that the device can be conveniently employed as a scra r. To remove the blade from the holder, e fin r piece 19 is depressed disengaging the ange 17 from the branch slot 15 andmoving the strip 16 endwise until the 5 finger piece abuts one end of the slot 13 which positions the blade outwardly of the head 3 so that it may be lifted off the lugs 9 of the plate 7 whence the blade may be reversed for presenting its other cutting edge in operative 10 position, or if desired, another blade substituted in lieu of the one removed.
While I have shown and described the preferred embodiment of my invention, it will be understood that minor changes in construc- 15 tion, combination and arrangement of parts may be made without departing from the spirit and scope or my invention, as claimed.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is:
go 1. A holder comprising a head having ooves openin outwardly through one edge t ereof, a han e on said head, guide flanges on said head, a plate slidable on the head and retained in engagement therewith by the g5 flanges, lugs on said plate and extending through a scraping blade into the grooves and means whereby the plate may be adj uste relative to the head and secured in any of its adjusted positions.
80 2. A holder comprising a head, a plate slidable on said head, means for securing a scraping blade to the late between the latter and the head, a hand e on said head, an extension on said plate, said handle, head, and
86 plate having slots and the slot of the head aving branch slots in communication with the respective slot thereof, a fastener extending through the extension and slot of the handle, a tension strip secured to the extension 40 by said fastener and having one end bent to form a flange extending through the slot of the plate and adapted to enter any one of the branch slots of the head for locking the blade in adjusted positions, and a finger piece on the I flange and extending through the slot of the head to permit disengagement of the flange from either of the branch slots and to permit the blade to be adjusted relative to the head. In testimony whereof I afllx my si ature.
