UNITED'- STATES PAT-ENT caricai l IBVING S. IBODKIN, 0F NEW YORK, N. Y., ASSIGNOR T0 GILLETTE SAFETY RAZOR 00M;- PANY, OF BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS, A CORPORATION 0F DELAWARE UTILITY KNIFE .Application led April 10,
more convenient member of this nature and 1 for the, purpose stated. f
My invention relates more particularly to a safety razor blade utility knife member which is so-constructed as to provide a relatively thin` and small Ivest pocket article, of light weight, easily adjustable from carrying position to working position and vice versa,
and which is convenient to carry in the closed y position'and so extended in its working posipermit easy handling thereof and knife quite suitable for general a relatively dat case for housing a blade holder which in turn is adapted-to support the blade. The holder is slidable within `the case to and from the carrying and working positions and the construction is such that the parts, including the guiding and retainmg elements'between the case and holder, may be most conveniently andeconomically stamped from sheet metal'. The production of such an improved device of this nature and for the 'purpose stated comprises a further object of my invention.
In the accompanyin' drawings I have illustrated one specific em odiment of my invention but it will be understood that the invention, can be otherwise embodied and that the drawings are not to be construed as 'definite or limiting the scope of 'the invention, the claims appended hereto being relied upon for that purpose.4
Referring tothe figures of the drawin n v Fig. l is a front elevation of one em odiment of my invention in closed position.
Fig. 2 isI a sectional view taken on line-2 2 of Fig. 1'. f l Fig. 3 is a view like Fig. 1 but showlng the devicein open position. n

Fig. 6 is a sectional view taken on line 6--6 of-Fig. 3. Fig. 7 is an enlar er1-fragmentary sectional viewtaken Online of Fig., 3.
Fig. 8 is an enlarged fragmentary view taken on lin-e 8--8 of Fig.
Referring now to the embodiment of my (it)I invention which is illustrated in the accompanying drawings,- 10 designates a case within which is`slidably mounted a holder 12 adapted to receive and carry a safety razor blade 14. While the case andl holder may be constructed in various forms and by various methods, they are capable of very i simple and economical construction and I have preferred to' herein illustrate the same as thus made, preferably of sheet metal and b v well known stamping operations;v Thus, while I shall now proceed to dene the specific construction illustrated, it will be understood that the same isby no means to be construed as a limitation on the invention.
The case 10, as illustrated, is formed from a flat sheet, referably of metaLIben-t yU- 'shaped upon itself to provide two iiat and relatively broad-sides connected together at an edge 16. One end and aportion of one side edge' of the'case is substantially closed by inwardly turned flanges 18 and a bail 20 for lattachino` a chain may beV connected to this end. The other end of thecase and the adjacent longitudinal/ edge portions opposite the closed edge 16 are open for permitting the passa e ofthe holder 12.
The ho der 12 is likewise formed from a flat sheetl bent U-shaped upon itself to provide two side portions for securing and holding the blade 14 therebetween. The connecting edge of the holder is relatively wide in the nature 'of abead 22, whereby an outward orflaring effect of the holder sides may be provided, and the co-operating portion 24 of the case adjacent to its edge 16 1s likewise relatively wide whereby-to receive the bead `and permit longitudinal and'transverse movenient of the` holder: withinl the case. The
sides of the case outwardv of the portion 24 are parallel and engage atwise against the side portions of the'holder. y
The closed and open positions of the holder within the case are shown in Figs. 1 and 3 respectively, the holder being movable diagonally of the case longitudinally and edgewise through an open end and side thereof to and from these positions. Thismovement isfacilitated and the holder is guided and held securely relatively to the case by a co-operating guiding connection between adjacent sides of the case and holder elements. As illustrated, the guides of this connection are preferably integral with these elements and may comprise co-oplerating-dia onall disposed ribs stamped t erefrom. he ri 2610i the case is shown pressed outwardly in groove-like form and the rib 13 of theholder 12 is pressed outward and is slidable longitudinally in the rib 2,6.' Said .ribs retain the case and the holder in different positions of said parts. .Stops 26a are shown located at the ends of the groove of rib'26, said stops being in the path of rib 13 to be engaged thereb to limit the longitudinal movement of t e holder within the case.
The holder may be drawn outwardly* byiv grasping a linger piece 28 and may be retained in two positions by a releasable detent l comprising. a resilient button 30 carried by the holder and engageable within two relatively spaced o enlngs 32 and 32a in one side of the case. en the holder is in its extended position, Sig. 3)', the blade edge is exposed for use yond the case. The co-operation of the ribs in conjunction with the diagonal or inclined positions thereofv resist thrusts against the blade edge in use. i When the holder is pushed inwardly in the case the blade edge will be concealed Vand shielded by the case, as in Fig. 1.
As shown in Fig. 7, the button 30isl an integral part of the inwardly extended end portlon of the side 15 of the holder. The adjacent end of the other side 15a of the holder is attached to the lside 15 by means of 'a ange 36 thereon entering a slot formed in the said side 15. The outer edge portions of the side portions ofthe holder normally spread apart or flare, as shown in Fig. 5, an
when in said position with the holder drawn outwardly as in Fig. 3, the blade can be removed and another inserted, the side portions being notched at 38 for assisting this operation. These edge portions of the hold-v er are held clamped against the blade by the finger piece or`gripper 28shown as a U- shaped member engaged over the outer end and the adjacent side portions of the holder. The gripper 28 is held insliding position on the holder by means of a retaining linger 40 struck out therefrom and extending through aligned slots 42 in the side portions of the holder. The gripper member 28 older 12 release the blade to facilitate removal and replacement. The case also may be notched at 44. s
Y The inner end of the holder side 15 can be sharpened and used as cigar cutter, taking advantage of the aperture 32 to receive the Y cigar end, (Fig. 7).
The parts as illustrated are simple but substantial and the arrangement is such that the device can bel made economically and will serve Aits intended function with great facility.
Having thus described my invention what. I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United -States is- .1.
