Description

March 15, 1949- H. M. LIGHTBURN RAZOR BLADE HOLDER Filed June 25, 1945 INVENTOR.
lle/265er M. L/a//raue/v f/W WLM@ Patented Mar. 15;, 1949 UNITED STATES] PATENT OFFICE This invention relates to ra razor blade holder or a cutting implement employing a razor iblade.
An object of the invention is to provide an improved razor blade holder or cutting implement -which utilizes that type of conventional razor blade which has a back or channel shaped'strip that is applied over the upperedge of the blade "andextends from end to end thereof.
More specifically, an object of the inventionis to provide a razor blade holder Aconsisting fof -a\.
holding element formed of a Section of :sheet metal reversely folded upon itself and adapted to receive the `blade of the Vrazor :blade therebetween. Ccrners of this holding element are removed to expose a corner of the razor blade and the top of the holding element is rebated to re- ',eivethe sides of the back ofthe blade. A sheath closely surrounds the holding; elementandis Slidable thereon to either cover or expose the corner of the blade and to maintain'theback vof the b ladef in its rebates. y
With the foregoing-and lother-objects in Aview,
` which will be made manifestv inthe following detailed description and specifically pointed out in the appended claims, reference is had to the accompanying drawings for an illustrative embodiment of the invention, wherein:
Figure l is a view in side elevation, parts being broken away and shown in section illustrating the improved razor blade holder embodying the present invention.
2 is a horizontal section taken substantially upon the line 2 2 upon Fig. 1.
3 is a vertical section taken substantially upon line 3-3 upon Fig. 1 and drawn on an enlarged scale.
Fig. 4 is a view similar to Fig. 1 but illustrating a slightly modified form of construction.
Fig. 5 is a horizontal section taken substantially upon the line 5 5 upon Fig. 4.
Referring to v the accompanying drawings wherein similar reference characters designate.
similar parts throughout, the improved razor blade holder comprises a section of sheet metal l reversely folded upon itself at I`I providing two closely adjacent parallel sides I2 and I3 between which the blade Hl of a safety razor blade having a back l5 may be inserted. The blade illustrated is of a conventional type of construction wherein the blade lll is relatively stiff and has an inverted U shaped channel strip secured over its top edge. The metal strip I has a thickness substantially equal to the thickness of the sides of the back l so that when the blade i4 is inserted between the sides l2 and I3 the back l5 will not 5 claims. (01,.'30-337l protrude outwardly beyond the sides. The lower forward corners ofA the strip lo are removed as indicated at l to expose the lower forward corner of the blade M. At the top of the strip there are formed rebates Il extending rearwardly from the reverse fold l I and these rebates are substantially 'equal in height and length to the dimensions of the sides of the back l5.
i handle or sheath I8 is provided which is of anattened tubular form and the length of this sheath is somewhat smaller than the length of the reversely folded strip lll. The sheath is designed to closely t about and to be slidable vontl'le holding. element and may occupy a position as shown in full lines on Fig. l wherein it exposes the entire forward lportion of the holding element vincluding the exposed lower corner of the blade 1 4, On sliding the holding element rearwardly Ain the `sheath as indicated by dotted lines on Fig.
)1 the corner of the blade will be covered by the .sheath and thus serve as a protection against accidential injury. Forward movement of the :holding element Ill with relation to the sheath may be limited by flaring the rear edges of the sides outwardly as indicated at i9 on Fig. 2.
In Figs. 4 and 5 I have illustr-ated an alternative form of construction wherein the holding element consists of a single strip of sheet metal 2l) reversely folded upon itself as at 2| providing closely adjacent parallel sides 22 and 23. The forward lower corners of the holder element are beveled off as indicated at 24 to eXpose the lower corner of the blade 25. The upper corners are rebated so as to snugly receive the back 2li. In this form of construction one side 22 is provided with a small detent 21 at its forward edge that can be snapped over the forward edge of the side 23 and which will lock the blade between the sides of the holding element. A sheath 2B snugly ts about the holding element and may slide thereon to either expose or cover the forward portion of the holding element and the blade mounted thereon.
In the above described construction whenever the blade becomes worn or damaged it is possible to easily slide off the sheath and either reverse the position of the blade in the holding element so as to expose the other corner or to replace the blade with a new blade.
It will be appreciated from the above described construction that an improved razor blade holder is provided designed to utilize a backed blade and to rmly retain the blade in position and providing a suitable handle therefor while cutting.
Various changes may be made in the details of construction without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as defined by the appended claims.v
I claim:
l. A device of the class described comprising a strip of sheet metal reversely folded on itself and between the sides of which the blade of a backed safety razor blade is receivable, said strip being cut away at one lower corner to expose a corner of the blade and being rebated at its top edge to receive the sides of the safety razor blade back, and a sheath closely fitting about said reversely folded strip and slidable thereon serving to cover or expose the exposed corner of the blade and to retain the blade in position with the sides of the back of the blade in their respective rebates.
2. A device of the class described comprising a strip of sheet metal reversely folded on itself and between the sides of which the blade of a backed safety razor blade is receivable, said strip being cut away at one lower corner to expose a corner of the blade and being rebated at its top edge to receive the sides of the safety razor blade back,
and a sheath closely fitting about said reversely folded strip and slidable thereon serving to cover or expose the exposed corner of the blade and to retain the blade in position with the sides of the back of the blade in their respective rebates, the rebates of said strip being of such size and shape as to fit snugly about the sides of the back in retaining its top flush with the top of the strip.
3. A device of the class described comprising a strip of sheet metal reversely folded on itself and between the sides of which the blade of a backed safety razor blade is receivable, said strip being cut away at one lower corner to expose a corner of the blade and being rebated at its top edge to receive the sides of the safety razor blade back, and a sheath closely fitting about said reversely folded strip and slidable thereon serving to cover or expose the exposed corner of the blade and to retain the blade in position with the sides of the back of the blade in their respective rebates, the sides of the strip being approximately equal in thickness to the thicknesses of the sides of the back of the razor blade.
4. A device of the class described comprising a strip of sheet metal reversely folded on itself to provide a holding implement and between the sides of which the blade of a backed safety razor blade is receivable, said strip being cut away at the reverse fold to expose a corner of the blade, and being rebated at its top edge from adjacent the reverse fold inwardly to receive the sides of the safety razor blade back, and a sheath closely fitting about said holding implement and sldable thereon serving to expose or cover the exposed corner of the blade and to retain the blade in position with the sides of the back of the blade at their rebates.
5. A device of the class described comprising a strip of sheet metal reversely folded upon itself adjacent its center to provide a holding implement and between the sides of which the blade of a backed safety razor blade is receivable, means for releasably fastening the forward ends of said sides together, the forward ends of said sides being cut away adjacent their lower corners to eX- pose a corner ofthe blade and being rebated at their upper forward corners to receive the sides` of the safety razor blade back, and a sheath closely itting about said reversely folded strip and slidable thereon serving to cover or expose the exposed corner of the b'l'ade and to retain the blade in position with the sides of the back of the blade in their respective rebates.
