IMPROVEMENT-IN CASES FOR DENTAL INSTRUMENTS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 186,793, dated January 30,1877; application filed April 3, 1876.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, E. PARMLY BROWN, of Flushing, State of New 'York, have invented a Dental (Jase, of which the following is a specification:
The object of my invention is to supply a want which has long been felt in the oflices of dentists, of a receptacle for their instru ments, which shall be easily adjusted and placed in a position convenient to the hand of the operator, and shall be capable of being tightly closed, so as to exclude dust and dampness when not in use, and which, at the same time, is capable of being made ornamental.
In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1, representing a horizontal section at X Y, shows the plan of the case, which is hexagonal. Fig. 2 is a vertical section through the center of the case, dividing it symmetrically, and shows it mounted, by means of a pivot-joint, A, and pedestal B, on v a portion of a table-top, C. One or more drawers are placed under the shelf E, in the space D. G is the shell or outer case, (shown raised up a short distance in order better to show the construction and working of the device.) This shell is capable of being raised up, so as to expose to view the contents of the shelves E and F, and is counterbalanced at any points by the weight H, which plays up and down inside the center piece. The weight is attached to the shell by means of three cords playing over pulleys, one of which is shown at K. The lower edge of the molding L is beveled, so as to fit the upper edge M of the drawer-front, so that looking down the shell also looks the drawers.
I am aware that cases for various purposes, mounted by means of pivots or shanks, so as to be capable of revolving, have been made before, andIdo not claim that device as a novelty. Iam also aware that windows have been made,
'both in houses and cases and cabinets, for
various specific purposes, which are capable of being raised and balanced by means of weights, cords, and pulleys.
What I claim as my invention is- The combination, in a dental case, of a single weight playing up and down inside a hollow central shaft, balanced by means of three cords, arranged'to play over pulleys or equivalent supports, with a movable outer shell, which is capable of being raised and lowered at will, all arranged substantially as and for the purposes described.
E. PARMLY BROWN.
