J'. M. PATTERSON. I
I MARKING BRUSH. N0.186.-75Z. Patented Jan.30,1877

- f y I NPEIERS. FHOT( JL|THOGRAPHE.R. WASHINGTON D C NITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES M. PATTERSON, OF EUGHEE, TENNESSEE.
IMPROVEMENT IN MARKING-BRUSHES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 1 86,752, dated January 30, 1877; application filed April 25, 1876.
To all whom at may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES MILTON PAT- TERSON, of the town of Euchee, county of Meigs, and State of Tennessee, have invented a new and Improved Marking-Brush, of which the following is a specification Figure 1 is a vertical longitudinal section of my improved marking-brush, taken through the line XX, Fig. 2; and Fig. 2 is a side view of the same.
The object of this invention is to furnish an improved marking-brush, which shall be so constructed as to contain the ink within itself, and thus enable the marking to be done more rapidly, and without soiling the hands of the operator.
The invention will first be described in connection with the drawing, and then pointed out in the claim.
A is the handle, which is made hollow, to contain the ink; and it is closed at its upper end with a cork or other convenient fastening. In the lower end of the tube A is secured a small block of wood, B, to the lower end of which the hairs G are attached. The upper part of the hairs C may be inclosed with a ferrule, D. The wooden block B is perforated longitudinally, and the upper end of said perforation is closed with a valve E, the stem F of which passes down through the cavity of the block B. The valve E is held down to its seat by the spiral spring G, which is placed in the cavity of the block B, around the valve-stem F. With the lower part of the valve-stem F is connected the end of a bent or angle lever, H, which passes through, and is pivoted at its angle, in a slot in one side of the wooden block D, and upon its outer end rests the lower end of a spring, I, the upper end of which is attached to the side of the handle A.
By this construction, by pressing upon the spring I with the finger or thumb, the lever H will raise the valve E, and allow the ink to flow through the block B to the hair 0.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is.
The combination, in a marking-brush with hollow handle A and thehair-holding ferrule D, of the centrally-perforated block B, containing valve E, and, spring G, operated by elbow-lever H, and outside thumb-piece I, as shown and described.
. JAMES MILTON PATTERSON.
