IMPROVEMENT IN FOUNTAIN-PENS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 145,102, dated December 2, 1873 3 application filed Q October 25, 1873.

To all whom fit may concern:

Be it known that I, HENRY NIOOLL HAMIL- TON, of White Plains, in the county of Westchester and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Fountain- Pen, of which the following is' a specification:

My invention has for its object to furnish an improved fountain-pen which shall be so con- Vstrueted asto contain a supply of ink, which may be allowed to iiow out as required for use, and may be confined when not required for use. The invention consists in the'hollow handle tapered at its lower end, the hollow screw-'plug having a hole in the side of its inner part, the rod, the valve, the perforated screw-plug, the pen, and the guard, constructed and arranged to operate in connection with each other, as hereinafter fully described.

A is the handle of the pen, which is made hollow, and is` tapered at its lower end. In the inner surface of the upper end of the handle A is cut a screw-thread to receive the screw-plug B, which is made hollow, with a closed lower end, and with a hole through its side, as shown in the drawing. To the lower or inner end of the screw-plug B is secured the end of a rod, C, which extends down to the tapering part of said handle, and has a valve, D, to fit into the lower part of thecavity, s0 as to prevent the outflow of the ink, unless the rod C and valve D are slightly raised. .E isa plug, which is screwed into the hollow screw-plug B. The nut E is perforated from its lower end, from the upper end of which a perforation leads out through the side of said plug, as shown in the figure.

By this construction, by turning the plug B up a little, the valve D is raised from its seat to allow the ink to flow out. The plug Eis then unscrewed sufficiently to bring its side vperforation above the plug B, so that the air may pass in to cause an outflow of the ink.

F is a pen, which is inserted in a socket in the lower eud of the handle A. In the lower end of the handle A is also inserted a guard or guide, Gr, which is made similar to a pen, but shorter, and isplaced with its concave side toward the concave side of the pen E, with its lower end or point far enough above the point of said pen to prevent it from being in the way when writing.y The guard G prevents the ink from dropping as it escapes'fro'm the handle, and guides it to the pen E. The pen F, guard G, and lower part of the handle A are covered with a cap, H, to prevent any ink from escaping when the pen is being carried.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- In combination with the barrel or ink-reservoir A, the hollow screw-cap B carrying the stem C and valve D, and adapted for the reception of the perforated screw valve or plug E, when the various parts are constructed to operate in the manner herein set forth and shown.
