Improvement in Fountain Pen.

UNITED STATES PATENT @rrron.
LEVI M. KNISELY, OF NEW PHILADELPHIA, OHIO.
IMPROVEMENT IN FOUNTAlN-PENS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 123,263, dated January 30, 187
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LEVI M. KNISELY, of New Philadelphia, in the county ofTuscara-was and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in I ountain-Inkers and Reservoirs for Ink Attached to Fountain Pen-Holders; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
The nature of my invention consists in the construction and arrangement ofafountain penholder, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, which forms a part of this specification, and in which Figure l'is a longitudinal vertical section of my entire pen-holder and Fig. 2 is a front view of that part immediately over which the pen is placed.
A represents a small tubular cylinder on which the pen rests, supported by a shoulder, b, in a larger cylinder, B, thereby preventing the pen from being pushed too far in. The cylinder A has a small channel, a, at the lower end on the outside under the pen to conduct the ink from the tube into the pen. This cylinder A is screwed into the tube of a larger cylinder, B, about three-quarters of an inch, forming at that end a stopper, preventing egress of the ink, except through the tube of the small cylinder A, into the channel a, leading it to the pen, said larger cylinder B thus becoming afountain or reservoir for ink. The outer end of the cylinder B is provided with an elongated screw-thread, i 011 its exterior. Upon this end of said cylinder is placed a cylinder, 0, open at one end and closed at the other. .Its interior is provided with a screw-thread, a to correspond with the screw-thread 3 on the cylinder B, and is of a length equal to the length of the thread of cylinder B, but not equal to the entire length of the cylinder 0, so that the latter cylinder slides over the former a short distance before the threads connect with each other. The cover or rim, being screwed onto the fountain-cylinder, forms an air-chamber, and the screw being turned to the right, as it were, condenses the air, which, pressing against the ink, causes it to flow through the channel of the small cylinder A into the pen in such quantity only as desired; and, by reversing the motion of the screw to the left, forms a vacuum, creatin g a suction which causes the ink to reeede to the fountain until none is left in the pen, and it is there held until the air is again condensed by turning the screw to the right, as above set forth.
The fountain is filled either by inserting the lower end into a vessel of ink and turnin the screw to the left as often as desired, or by pouring the ink in at the upper end, having first removed the cap or air-chamber, or by taking that offan d pouring intoit, then screwing down the fountain into the chamber. The pen need not be removed in filling the holder.
To protect the pen, Ilit a cap, D, on its end, and in the end of this cap is a small orifice, d, to prevent suction when the cap is being removed from the holder, thus forming a smooth, complete, cylindrical, capped hydraulic inker and fountain pen-holder, which may be made of hard rubber or other suitable material, and capable of being carried about the person without danger of spilling, and without allowing the ink to corrode in the fountain.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The combination of the cylinderA with channel a, the fountain or reservoir B with shoulder b and elongated screw-thread y, the screw-cover O with screwthread, all constructed and arranged as shown and described, to form a complete hydraulicinker and fountain pen-holder, substantially as herein set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 15th day of September, 1871.
LEVI M. KNISELY. Witnesses:
O. H. .MICHTENER, J. M. KENNEDY.
