Description
P. M UNZINGER. GAS-PURIFIERS.
`Pauented. Ian.. 30,-1877.
PETER MUNZINGER, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR TO MORRIS, TASKER 8v CO., (LIMITED,) OF SAME PLAGE.
IMPROVEMENT IN GAS-PURIFIERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 186,711.7.
dated January 30, 1877 application led October 10, 1876.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, PETER MUNZINGER, of the city and county of Philadelphia, in the State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Gas-Purifiers; of which I do hereby declare the following specification to be a full, clear, and precise description, and sufficient to enable those skilled in the art to which my improvement appertains to comprehend amd construct it, reference being made to the accompanying drawing, which forms part of this specification.
My invention relates to gas-purifier for gasworks, and has for its object an improvement in the art of making the said purifiers, whereby the cost of their manufacture is lessened and their construction rendered much easier, to which end it consists as hereinafter set forth and claimed.
Purifiers of the class to which this invention relates are madein sections bolted or riveted together.
The size of the purifiers is very often great, and the difficulty of their construction increases with their size.
The bottom cornersections A consist of lengths of malleable iron of rightangular section, to which the side sections and bottoms of the purifier are riveted or otherwise secured.
These bottom corner-sections, of which there are four, must be forged into a right-angular knee, B, as shown in Figure 1, at one end of each, in order to form a knee or vertical corner, about which knee the side sections are attached.
When thepuritier is of any considerable size the forging of the aforesaid knee is a matter of much difficulty and nicety, inasmuch as it is almost impossible by reason of its length to manipulate the bottom section A to the anvil.
To obviate this difficulty this my invention aims, and to that end consists in a forged orl cast corner knee-section, of any fit material, adapted to be secured to both of the bottom corner-sections which adjoin it, and which are consequently made straight, and thus all forging obviated.
Fig. l 'of the drawing represents in perspective the entire interior of one end of a puritier, in which A represents the old-fashioned bottom corner section forged about to form the knee at B. It will be readily compre hended that in such form the long end U of the bottom section must be most unwieldly to manipulate for forging. E F are the side sections 5 G, the bottom. Y
In Fig. 2 myimprovement is shown, also in perspective, the corner knee-section being indicated by the letter D.
The same consists of a forged or cast angle-piece or corner, formed substantially as shown-that is to say, provided at each extremity with shoulders, and projections Q, in the nature of tenons which lie upon the inside of the straight bottom corner sections M N adjoining, and to which tenons the said sections are riveted.
It is obvious that the exact conformation of the corner knee-section is optional, and that it may be connected to the adjoining lengths in any manner desired.
Having thus described myinvention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States- The corner knee-section D, provided at each extremity with a abutting against and overlapping adjoining bottom corner-sections M N, and adapted to' be secured thereto, as shown and described, and for the purpose specified.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto signed my name in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
