JOHN BURKHARDT, OF NE\V YORK, N. Y., ASSIGNOR OF ONEHALF TO XVILLIAM H. JACKSON 8: CO., OF SAME PLACE.
CONSTRUCTION OF SCREENS, GRATES, AND PANELS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 378,415 dated February 21, 1888.
Application filed September 3. 1887.
7'0 (LIZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JOHN BURKILARDT, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county and State of New York, have invented an Improvement in the Construction ot'Screens, Gratings, and Similar Articles; and I do hereby declare that the followingisa full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawi ngs,and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
In the drawings, Figure 1 represents a central sectional view of a hollow spheroidal body with four openings at equal distances apart around its center. Fig. 2 represents asimilar sectional view of the same with a rod or bar inserted through it, such as may be used in constructing screens or gratings. Fig. 3 is a like view of the globular body with a section of railing or red inserted through it, also showing a \iGtigGSlltlPQd tool used for opening the holes or slots in the rod, as shown in Fig. 4, for the insertion of crossrods as used in forming rectangular gratings or screens. Figs. 5 and (3 represent screen work as made with my improvement.
The object of my invention is to furnish ornamental screens, gratings, and panels with greater economy of time and labor than heretot'ore; and the invention consists in forming and covering the joints of the work without the use of screws or castings, and in the manner hereinafter set forth.
lhe spheroidal hollow body or joint-cover may be made of metal or other suitable mate rial, and may have the holes a b e (2 made at equal distances apart around its center and of the exact size of the rods or bars to be used in constructing screens or gratings. Before the rods or bars A are inserted through the balls Serial No. 248,768. (No model.)
or covers 0 slots or chisel-cuts will be made through them at such distances apart as will be necessary to makea grating of any particular dimensions of mesh, and after the rods are inserted through the globular or other shaped joint-covers G, with the slotsiin rods A brought within the covers 0, the tapering tool 1) (which is oval-shaped in crossseetion) will be inserted through hole a of the cover, and its point will enter the slot 2 and open the slot by rotary and compressive action and form the circular hole 0. tShown in Fig. 4.) At this stage ofthe coustructiou the work will be ready to insert the cross rods or bars B through the holes a I) of the cover 0 and the hole 0 in rod A to complete the screen or grating.
Instead ofsolid rods or bars of metal or other material, tubing may be used for the purpose ofthe grating orscreen and render the structu re less weighty.
It is apparent that a variety of forms and designs may be employed in joint-covers besides the globular; also, that panels to he filled with glass or other ornamental materials may be made in the manner substantially as described.
Having fully described my improvement in screens, gratings, and panels, I claim as my invention- The screen or grating with hollow jointcovers 0, havingopenings a b c d, in combination with bars or rods A, having perforations 0, for the insertion of cross-rods B, constructed in the manner described.
itness my hand this 13th day of June, A. D. 1887.
JOHN BURKHARDT.
